Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Injured and cognitively impaired state | 33–41 | Fought with a ship’s wheel embedded in his head and the Great Grade Swords Withered Tree and Cherry Blossom Ten replacing his legs. The injuries weakened his Armament and Observation Haki and left him erratic, though he remained overwhelmingly stronger than Minos at the time. |
| Restored, peak-plus state | 42 | Holy Grail Wine expelled the wheel, regenerated his legs, restored his intellect and Haki, and returned his body to roughly a forty-year-old physical condition. His strength not only returned to its former peak but showed potential to continue increasing. |
| Revitalized Flying Pirate | 43, 49 | With his injuries cured, Shiki resumed his ambition to rule the world, defeated Zephyr, and began rebuilding the Flying Pirates for a return to the New World. |
Background
Golden Lion was once a prominent member of the Rocks Pirates. His association with Charlotte Linlin was based on mutual benefit rather than close friendship, while he got along comparatively well with Whitebeard. Kaido was a younger associate from that era and later became one of Shiki’s principal rivals. 34 63
His original Flying Pirate crew was nearly destroyed in a naval battle. A ship’s wheel became lodged in his head, and after Roger’s imprisonment he attacked Marine Headquarters alone, only to be defeated and imprisoned in Impel Down by Sengoku and Garp. Shiki escaped by cutting off his own legs, but his surviving crew had already scattered; Dr. Indigo was the only trusted subordinate who remained. 36
The wheel’s effect severely impaired Shiki’s judgment. While hiding among his floating islands, he developed a plan to use IQ Plants and Berserk Potions to create uncontrollable monster armies and destroy the East Blue in retaliation for Roger’s execution. 36 37
Appearance
Before his recovery, Shiki was a golden-haired man with a thick cigar, an embedded ship’s wheel atop his head, and two swords in place of his legs. His appearance and bearing were marked by an arrogant, unruly presence. 34
- Golden hair. 34
- A ship’s wheel embedded in his skull until it was removed by Holy Grail Wine. 34 42
- Formerly used Withered Tree and Cherry Blossom Ten as prosthetic legs. 42
- Regenerated his natural legs after being healed. 42
- Commonly carries or smokes cigars. 34 61
Personality
Shiki is proud, domineering, and intensely vain about his reputation. He enjoys recognition of his title and reacts favorably when Minos praises the value of the “Flying Admiral Golden Lion” name. 34 222
Despite his brutality toward people he considers useless, he values strength and potential. He recruited Minos after witnessing him withstand a Wave Slash, tolerated Baby5’s attack because of her potential, and retained Judge after recognizing the Vinsmoke family’s enhanced bodies and technological value. 35 39 41
The injury to his head left him impulsive, forgetful, and unable to accurately assess power levels. After being cured, he became far more clear-headed and strategic, regretting the irrational plans he had made while impaired. 36 37 42 43
Shiki also possesses the battle-hungry disposition of a top pirate. He was exhilarated rather than deterred when Minos proved capable of challenging him alongside the Great Vajra Heavenly Dragon. 178
Abilities & Skills
Float-Float Fruit
Shiki’s Devil Fruit grants him control over levitation, allowing him to fly and manipulate massive objects in the air.
- Raises ships, islands, and entire island chains into the sky. 33 35
- Maintains the Flying Pirates’ floating-island territory. 35 63
- Enables three-dimensional aerial combat and greatly expands the range and angles of his sword attacks. 38
- Creates colossal lion-shaped constructs from earth, stone, and water. 46 178
- Countered Issho’s meteor strike with his floating ability. 56
Dual-Wield Swordsmanship
Shiki is an exceptional dual-wielding great swordsman. In his prime, he was considered a contender for the world’s greatest swordsman, comparable to figures such as Dracule Mihawk and Kōzuki Oden. 38
- Trained Minos through repeated, brutal sparring sessions that rapidly improved Minos’s swordsmanship. 38
- Regained his full technical repertoire after recovering his natural legs and wielding his swords by hand again. 42 46
- His swordsmanship remained superior to Minos’s during their later duel, even when Minos wielded Enma. 178
- Known techniques include:
Haki
Shiki possesses all three major forms of Haki, though his head injury once weakened his Armament and Observation Haki. 38
- Conqueror’s Haki — restored to an absolute peak-level presence after his recovery; its pressure nearly forced Judge to kneel. 42
- Armament Haki — coats his swords for destructive clashes against opponents such as Zephyr. 46
- Observation Haki — used to detect Minos’s familiar presence while Shiki was in the Calm Belt. 178
IQ Plant Research and Berserk Potions
Shiki commands research into IQ Plants through Dr. Indigo and later Vinsmoke Judge.
- Berserk Potion can make animals gigantic and berserk, increasing their combat power by more than tenfold. 36
- The potion has a stated one-hundred-percent success rate on animals, but its transformed creatures cannot be controlled. 36
- The later IQ Potion enhances human combat power but does not increase intelligence. 43
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Withered Tree — Great Grade Sword; formerly implanted as Shiki’s right leg and later returned to hand-held use. 42 46
- Cherry Blossom Ten — Great Grade Sword; formerly implanted as Shiki’s left leg and later returned to hand-held use. 42 46
- Floating islands — his mobile territory, base of operations, and a source of large-scale ammunition through the Float-Float Fruit. 35 46 178
- Berserk Potions — IQ Plant-derived experimental serum used to create powerful but uncontrollable beasts. 36
- Holy Grail Wine — not native equipment, but the treatment that healed his injuries, restored his mind, and rejuvenated his body. 42
Relationships
- Minos — Initially captured and recruited Minos after testing his strength. Shiki became his swordsmanship mentor, later accepted Minos’s refusal to rejoin the Flying Pirates, and eventually allied with him against the World Government, Marines, and Beasts Pirates. 35 38 178 222
- Charlotte Linlin — Former Rocks Pirates associate. Their relationship was primarily mutually beneficial, and their crews later became potential rivals over Minos’s position. 34 49
- Kaido — Former Rocks-era junior and recurring rival. Their clashes devastated floating islands, and neither could quickly defeat the other. 63 224 229
- Dr. Indigo — Shiki’s loyal ship doctor and chief scientist; one of the few original Flying Pirates who remained with him after his escape from Impel Down. 36
- Vinsmoke Judge — Forced into Shiki’s service after Shiki overwhelmed him and his children. Judge later assisted with human modification and IQ Potion research. 41 43
- Zephyr — Marine adversary whom Shiki fought after publicly declaring his return; Shiki later claimed victory after Zephyr escaped into the sea. 45 49
- Issho — A Marine opponent whose gravity powers directly opposed Shiki’s levitation in an aerial confrontation. 56 59
Story Role / Major Arcs
Capture of Minos and the Flying Pirates
Shiki’s flying ship seized Minos, Baby5, and residents of Sleepy Town, bringing them to his sky islands as potential test subjects for his IQ Potion experiments. After Minos countered a Wave Slash in Evil Eye King Mode, Shiki recruited him into the Flying Pirates in exchange for releasing Minos’s former crew. 33 35
The Impaired Captain
As Minos learned more about the Flying Pirates, Shiki’s crew was revealed to be vastly weaker than a typical Emperor crew, consisting largely of captured or affiliated pirates. His head injury had left him fixated on an irrational plan to destroy the East Blue with Berserk Animals; Minos redirected his ambition toward ruling the world and manipulating Germa 66’s technology. 36 38
Recovery and Return
Minos gave Shiki Holy Grail Wine, which cured his injuries, restored his intellect, and returned him to full fighting condition. Shiki then publicly announced his return, fought Zephyr, elevated Minos to a vice-captain-like position, and prepared to reclaim territory in the New World. 42 49
Rivalries with Marines and Kaido
Shiki faced Marine forces led by Issho and Judge, continuing an aerial battle against Issho even after his ship fell into the sea. He later fought Kaido in the sky for two days, with neither side able to secure a decisive victory. 56 59 63
Separation from Minos
Shiki found Minos again in the Calm Belt through Observation Haki and attempted to recruit him back into the Flying Pirates. Minos refused, declaring that a pirate crew did not need two kings. Their duel escalated into a clash of Conqueror’s Haki, swordsmanship, floating lions, and the Great Vajra Heavenly Dragon; Shiki ultimately accepted Minos’s independence. 177 179
Alliance with Minos
Shiki later answered Minos’s call to join a coming conflict against the World Government, Marines, and Beasts Pirates, accepting Holy Grail Wine as part of their agreement. He arrived as reinforcement during Minos’s battle against the Marine Admirals, prompting Kaido to retreat after a brief clash. 222 229
