Background / History

Esdeath was born on the northern frontier as the daughter of the Baltes Tribe's chieftain. Her people specialized in hunting Danger Beasts, and their survival-of-the-fittest worldview shaped her from childhood. After returning from a hunt to find her tribe exterminated by northern foreign tribes, she internalized the belief that suffering and death result from personal weakness. 110 119

She drank the entirety of the Manifestation of the Demon God: Essence of the Demon, a Teigu made from the blood of a legendary northern Super Danger Beast. Previous drinkers had gone mad, but Esdeath mastered its demonic power, gaining overwhelming ice-based abilities. 116

As an Imperial general, Esdeath concluded the northern campaign and returned to the Imperial Capital. She formed the Jaegers, an elite special police force of Teigu Users, to hunt Night Raid and other anti-Empire groups. 105 106 110

Return to the Imperial Capital

After winning the northern campaign, Esdeath returns to the Imperial Capital, prompting Night Raid to suspend most operations due to Nadjeshda's fear of confronting her. 105

She establishes the Jaegers and orders a purge of Night Raid and other hostile underground organizations. She also deploys the Three Beasts to assassinate respected former officials and frame Night Raid for the killings. 106 110

Assault on Night Raid

Esdeath oversees the Jaegers' operation against Night Raid's hidden base. Once the Jaegers and Imperial Guard are overwhelmed by Clara's Mechanical Constructs, she enters the battle personally. 111 115 116

She freezes the surrounding forest and constructs, defeats Night Raid's members, blocks Mine's fire, overwhelms Leone and Brood, and prevents Akame from landing Muramasa's decisive strike. 116

Battle with Svarog

Svarog challenges Esdeath after Night Raid is defeated. Their battle escalates from energy beams, missiles, ice constructs, and close combat to Svarog's Destruction Path power. 117 118

Esdeath activates Makoto Houtou and freezes time, but Svarog's frozen body is a decoy created through intangibility. He appears behind her and restrains her with an Oddity that neutralizes the combat power of targets below planetary level. 118

Capture and Recruitment

While imprisoned, Esdeath accepts that her loss proves she was weaker than Clara and Svarog. Clara offers her survival, future strength, and the right to challenge Svarog again in exchange for serving her faction. 119

Esdeath tacitly accepts the arrangement, motivated by her desire to become stronger and take revenge. Clara subsequently places her under the control of a more flexible Oddity as a safeguard. 119 120

Mechanical Legion Commander

After General Budou's death, Esdeath leads Clara's Mechanical Legions against the remaining Rebel Alliance. Her appearance devastates the rebels' morale, as they had believed her to be dead or removed from the conflict. 125
