Background / History

Hongjun and Yang Mei were the last two of four great immortals still standing against Luohu. Though they defeated him, Luohu detonated the western earth veins, severely damaging the region; Hongjun survived behind the Myriad Heavens’ Auspicious Cloud, while Yang Mei was badly wounded. Luohu then transformed into an Outer Realm Sky Demon and established the Demonic Cult. 1

After the battle, the Primordial Chaos Bead absorbed the essence blood of Hongjun, Yang Mei, and Luohu, then merged with a fragment of the Jade Disc of Creation. Hongjun recognized the bloodline connection, accepted the bead-born Xuan Yi as his son, and gave him the Daoist title Xuan Qingzi. 1

Once recovered, Hongjun awakened the Heavenly Dao through the Jade Disc of Creation. The Heavenly Dao named him its spokesperson and instructed him to comprehend the disc in preparation for merging with it after three lectures. Hongjun also secured the Heavenly Dao’s recognition of Xuan Yi as its child, stressing the need to protect him because his death would unbalance and potentially destroy the Primordial Chaos. 2 3

Hongjun personally raised Xuan Yi at Jade Capital Mountain. He helped him transform, supplied him with heavenly treasures, bestowed several powerful spiritual treasures, arranged Haotian and Yaochi as attendants, and provided an Incarnation Talisman that would summon Hongjun in an emergency. 2 4

After attaining sainthood, Hongjun established Zixiao Palace and preached three sermons to the great cultivators of the Primordial World. During these sermons, he explained the paths to sainthood, accepted disciples, appointed the leaders of male and female immortals, distributed Primordial Violet Qi, and designated Xuan Yi as leader of the Xuanmen, with rank above the Saints. 6 9 14 21

Following the third sermon, Hongjun merged with the Heavenly Dao. He continued to intervene in major affairs, including ordering a ten-thousand-year truce between the Witch and Demon races and overseeing the succession of the Heavenly Emperor. 19 34

When Yang Mei returned after reaching the Grand Unity Golden Immortal of the Great Dao, Hongjun fought him in the chaos but was outmatched. He nevertheless prevented Yang Mei from taking Xuan Yi by emphasizing Xuan Yi’s marriage to Nuwa and allowing Xuan Yi himself to decide. 24

Personality

Hongjun is intensely protective of Xuan Yi. He immediately claimed the newly born bead as his son, equipped him with rare treasures, refused to let him travel without safeguards, and repeatedly treated threats to Xuan Yi’s safety as intolerable. 1 2 3 4

He is also politically calculating and openly favors those close to Xuan Yi. Hongjun accepted Nuwa as a direct disciple partly because she was Xuan Yi’s future wife, later granting Xuan Yi authority above all Saints as leader of the Xuanmen. 9 21

Despite his authority, Hongjun can be competitive and petty toward Xuan Yi’s other fathers. He resented Yang Mei’s involvement in Xuan Yi’s birth, feared Yang Mei or Luohu might take Xuan Yi away, and belittled Yang Mei’s gifts after Yang Mei proved stronger than him. 2 24
