Background / History

Lena was born in the Hive City of Asphodel. When her psychic nature was discovered, her devout mother fled with her into the Lower Hive rather than surrender her to the Black Ships. Her mother gave her a Scripture of the Word tattoo and promised that both the Emperor and she herself would protect Lena. 274

By the time Zhou Yun met her, Lena was the Ark Gang’s Pontiff and leader. Although an unregistered psyker, she was neither mutated nor visibly corrupted. Her cheek bore the golden Scripture of the Word tattoo, and she believed the God-Emperor had shown her visions of Tyranids descending upon Asphodel. 32

Convinced that Asphodel needed an escape route, Lena planned to build an Ark from an old slave-ship design and evacuate people to Baal. Her initial scheme depended on locating a Warp engine and using her own Psykana as a makeshift Gellar Field, despite the danger this posed to her life. 33

During the Tyranid invasion, Lena led illegal psykers against the Brain Bugs’ psychic assaults while General Drost and the Cadians held the front line. She later became leader of the 184th Regiment of Cadia, though her temporary Inquisitorial permit was effectively lost when Cadia itself was destroyed. 121 273

After the fall of Cadia, a Slaaneshi daemon’s blade damaged her facial tattoo and left a scar. Lena subsequently suffered fever and hallucinations as her psychic power surged, instinctively destroying the daemon’s material body. 244

Lena is a brown-haired woman with slightly blue eyes. Her original defining feature was a golden Scripture of the Word tattoo on her cheek; after Cadia, only its scar remained. 32 274

Lena is deeply devout and sees her psychic gift as part of the Emperor’s plan. Her desire to save people repeatedly drives her into dangerous situations, from planning the Ark evacuation to standing against Abaddon and the forces of Chaos. 32 33 252

She is earnest, emotionally transparent, and prone to blunt, instinctive solutions. Although she can lead people and make battlefield decisions, complex theory, mathematics, and technical Psykana instruction are unusually difficult for her to retain. This limitation also makes her exceptionally resistant to Warp knowledge and the corruption attempts of Tzeentch. 88 292 358

Lena trusts Zhou Yun’s judgment after their repeated collaborations, though she is frequently bewildered by his methods and secrets. She eventually confesses that she wants a peaceful life with him on a feudal world. 100 285
