Background / History

Sanguinius was scattered through the Warp with the other Primarchs and landed in the Baal System. There he received the Warp blessing that gave him his angelic white wings, while his nobility and character earned him the reputation of an angel among humanity. 2 216

Before his physical return, a winged figure in white light repeatedly appeared in Zhou Yun’s mind, claiming to be Sanguinius and warning him of danger. Zhou initially regarded the being as a possible Warp deception rather than trusting its identity. 1 2

Sanguinius’s essence is inseparable from his death aboard the Vengeful Spirit. He later explains that his present existence was born from that future death, while the Blood Angels’ Black Rage is an echo of it. 221 238

His resurrection during the Battle of Baal gives the Blood Angels renewed hope. He assumes command directly from Dante, reorganizes the surviving Astartes, and changes the condition of warriors afflicted by the Black Rage into a more focused connection with his will. 218 448

A time-transcending wound inflicted by Horus continues to corrode Sanguinius’s flesh and spirit. Much of his strength is expended maintaining a Warp storm around Baal to shield his vision from the Chaos Gods and correct local time, leaving him temporarily too weak to fly. 221

Sanguinius is gentle, composed, and compassionate even toward those whose actions have disgraced his bloodline. He personally comforts the final surviving Blood Knight, declares that the Chapter has redeemed itself through sacrifice, and calls its warriors his proud sons. 221

He is nevertheless direct about the failures of his brothers and the Imperium. He rebukes Guilliman’s idealism while acknowledging that humanity needs Guilliman’s leadership, and he accepts his own Warp-tainted nature rather than pretending to be pure. 216 281
