Background / History

Tongtian publicly accepted Duobao, Zhao Gongming, Wudang, Yunxiao, Bixiao, Qiongxiao, Guiling, and Jinling as his direct disciples. When Tai Cang petitioned to join after the selection, Tongtian accepted him as an inner disciple because their master-disciple karma was shallow. He then taught the sect the Upper Clarity Tongtian Art while withholding the personal guidance reserved for direct disciples. 1

After Tai Cang injured Duobao, Tongtian judged that Tai Cang had broken sect rules by fighting a fellow disciple, but imposed a comparatively light punishment: five hundred years of confinement at Siguo Cliff. He also confined Duobao for eight hundred years. 4 Siguo Cliff was the place where the Three Pure Ones manifested; Tai Cang discovered their residual inheritances there and concluded that Tongtian had used the punishment to secretly nurture him. 5

Tongtian later healed Di Yi after Tai Cang defeated the Golden Crow Prince, allowing Di Yi to break through. 11 He also stopped Tai Cang from rashly accepting Di Jun's token, then approved the acceptance after assessing its implications. 12

Tongtian's prolonged favoritism toward Duobao and tolerance of Duobao's suppression of Tai Cang damaged his relationship with Tai Cang. 14 After Tai Cang became the legitimate successor of Cang Gate, Tongtian recognized his earlier mistake and ordered his disciples not to offend him. 18

As conflict spread through the Intercepting Sect, Tongtian sought Tai Cang's return. He ultimately accepted Tai Cang's proposal to abolish the old personal-disciple hierarchy, reopen twelve positions to capable disciples, and establish advancement through assessments. 73 Tongtian then appointed Tai Cang as the Intercepting Sect's Young Sect Master and entered seclusion. 74

Personality

Tongtian initially valued hierarchy among his disciples, distinguishing sharply between direct and inner disciples. 1 His partiality toward Duobao made him hesitant to address internal misconduct decisively, contributing to Tai Cang's estrangement from the sect. 14

He is nevertheless capable of revising his judgment. He recognized Duobao's inability to accept defeat, privately fostered Tai Cang's growth, and later embraced Tai Cang's “break and then stand” approach to reforming the Intercepting Sect. 5 73

Tongtian is protective of those he regards as his own. He healed Tai Cang after the Golden Crow battle, supplied him with incomplete laws from the Jade Disc of Creation, and personally intervened when Zhunti attempted to kill him. 11 78 79

Sage Cultivation

Tongtian is one of the Three Pure Ones and possesses the authority and power of a Sage. His presence and actions are treated as decisive in disputes among major factions. 1 79

Tongtian's swordsmanship is described as the most outstanding among the Three Pure Ones' specialities. The Shangqing Sword Art is an incomplete portion of his pre-Sage sword inheritance. 5
