Background & History

Duobao was already established as Tongtian's chief personal disciple when Tai Cang entered the Intercepting Sect. As an inner disciple, Tai Cang stood behind Duobao and the other direct disciples in Upper Clarity Palace. 1

After more than a century in the sect, Duobao held a gathering ostensibly to celebrate and welcome fellow disciples. Its real purpose was to establish a system through which the personal disciples would jointly govern future recruits, with a single representative reporting to Tongtian; Duobao expected to become that representative and thereby the de facto head of the personal disciples. 2 3

Tai Cang's nomination disrupted the plan. Duobao challenged him to a duel, seeking to prove that strength and authority belonged to him. He deployed more than a hundred flying swords and attempted to finish the battle with Upper Clarity Divine Thunder, but Tai Cang defeated him before using the full power of his Primordial Clarity Divine Thunder. Tongtian confined Duobao to his residence for eight hundred years for privately fighting a junior disciple. 3 4

Humiliated and jealous of Tai Cang's progress, Duobao attempted to force his way into the Grand Unity realm. The resulting Three Disasters damaged his Dao foundation and left his Golden Immortal cultivation unstable; the Sun Moon Essence was sought to aid his recovery. After regaining strength and reaching the early Grand Unity Golden Immortal realm, he blamed Tai Cang for delaying his recovery and attacked Tai Cang's residence. 7 8 13 14

During the Beast Realm expedition, Duobao led three personal disciples and multiple inner disciples in an ambush against Tai Cang. His followers abandoned him when Tai Cang overwhelmed them, revealing that Chang'er Dingguang Xian had incited Duobao against Tai Cang. Duobao escaped using a spatial jade talisman after Tai Cang severed his right arm; Tongtian subsequently confined him on Siguo Cliff. 23 24

Duobao later rebuilt influence among the Intercepting Sect's registered disciples by openly teaching them restricted arts. He manipulated Yunxiao into using the Primordial Golden Dou, then used the incident to accuse her of misusing the treasure and rally disciples to his side. Tongtian ultimately abolished Duobao's personal-disciple status alongside those of Yunxiao, Bixiao, Qiongxiao, Wudang, Jinling, and Guiling. 71 72 73

After Tai Cang became Young Sect Master, Duobao sheltered expelled disciples, incited them to attack sect members, and secretly met with Jieyin and Zhunti. When Tai Cang exposed the evidence, Duobao was revealed to have cultivated the Western Teachings' Buddha Golden Body. He admitted that he had joined the Western Teachings and expected to preside over it in the future. Zhunti intervened to prevent Tai Cang from executing him. 111 112 113

Personality

Duobao is intensely ambitious and treats authority within the Intercepting Sect as his rightful possession. His early proposal to manage all new disciples was framed as serving Tongtian, but was intended to make him the effective leader of the personal disciples. 3

He is deeply jealous of Tai Cang's talent and advancement. This resentment drives him from open challenges and accusations to ambushes, manipulation of disciples, and eventual collaboration with the Western Teachings. 4 13 23 111 113

Duobao is also capable of political calculation. He recognized the growing importance of registered disciples and sought to secure their loyalty through lectures and restricted teachings; he later framed Yunxiao in a way that shifted public opinion in his favor. 71 72
