Background & History

Duobao was already established as Tongtian's chief personal disciple when Tai Cang entered the Intercepting Sect. As an inner disciple, Tai Cang stood behind Duobao and the other direct disciples in Upper Clarity Palace. 1

After more than a century in the sect, Duobao held a gathering ostensibly to celebrate and welcome fellow disciples. Its real purpose was to establish a system through which the personal disciples would jointly govern future recruits, with a single representative reporting to Tongtian; Duobao expected to become that representative and thereby the de facto head of the personal disciples. 2 3

Tai Cang's nomination disrupted the plan. Duobao challenged him to a duel, seeking to prove that strength and authority belonged to him. He deployed more than a hundred flying swords and attempted to finish the battle with Upper Clarity Divine Thunder, but Tai Cang defeated him before using the full power of his Primordial Clarity Divine Thunder. Tongtian confined Duobao to his residence for eight hundred years for privately fighting a junior disciple. 3 4

Humiliated and jealous of Tai Cang's progress, Duobao attempted to force his way into the Grand Unity realm. The resulting Three Disasters damaged his Dao foundation and left his Golden Immortal cultivation unstable; the Sun Moon Essence was sought to aid his recovery. After regaining strength and reaching the early Grand Unity Golden Immortal realm, he blamed Tai Cang for delaying his recovery and attacked Tai Cang's residence. 7 8 13 14

During the Beast Realm expedition, Duobao led three personal disciples and multiple inner disciples in an ambush against Tai Cang. His followers abandoned him when Tai Cang overwhelmed them, revealing that Chang'er Dingguang Xian had incited Duobao against Tai Cang. Duobao escaped using a spatial jade talisman after Tai Cang severed his right arm; Tongtian subsequently confined him on Siguo Cliff. 23 24

Duobao later rebuilt influence among the Intercepting Sect's registered disciples by openly teaching them restricted arts. He manipulated Yunxiao into using the Primordial Golden Dou, then used the incident to accuse her of misusing the treasure and rally disciples to his side. Tongtian ultimately abolished Duobao's personal-disciple status alongside those of Yunxiao, Bixiao, Qiongxiao, Wudang, Jinling, and Guiling. 71 72 73

After Tai Cang became Young Sect Master, Duobao sheltered expelled disciples, incited them to attack sect members, and secretly met with Jieyin and Zhunti. When Tai Cang exposed the evidence, Duobao was revealed to have cultivated the Western Teachings' Buddha Golden Body. He admitted that he had joined the Western Teachings and expected to preside over it in the future. Zhunti intervened to prevent Tai Cang from executing him. 111 112 113

Personality

Duobao is intensely ambitious and treats authority within the Intercepting Sect as his rightful possession. His early proposal to manage all new disciples was framed as serving Tongtian, but was intended to make him the effective leader of the personal disciples. 3

He is deeply jealous of Tai Cang's talent and advancement. This resentment drives him from open challenges and accusations to ambushes, manipulation of disciples, and eventual collaboration with the Western Teachings. 4 13 23 111 113

Duobao is also capable of political calculation. He recognized the growing importance of registered disciples and sought to secure their loyalty through lectures and restricted teachings; he later framed Yunxiao in a way that shifted public opinion in his favor. 71 72

Abilities & Skills

Sword Control Technique

Duobao can control large formations of flying swords through hand seals.

  • Initially deployed more than ten flying swords against Tai Cang during their first duel. 3
  • Escalated to a hundred flying swords after failing to penetrate Tai Cang's defenses. 4
  • His swords were heavily damaged when Tai Cang's superior Upper Clarity mana repelled them. 4

Upper Clarity Divine Thunder

Duobao cultivated the Intercepting Sect's Upper Clarity Divine Thunder.

  • He attempted to use it as a decisive attack against Tai Cang during their duel. 4
  • Its power was considered comparable to a divine ability by the observing disciples. 4
  • Tai Cang's Primordial Clarity Divine Thunder surpassed it, leaving Duobao unable to resist. 4

Buddha Golden Body

Duobao secretly cultivated the Western Teachings' Buddha Golden Body after associating with Jieyin and Zhunti.

  • Its discovery served as proof that he had abandoned the Intercepting Sect and the Cang Gate. 113
  • Duobao initially denied the accusation before residual Buddha light on his shattered communication talisman exposed his connection to the Western Sages. 113

Equipment / Items

  • Flying swords — Duobao's primary weapons during his duel with Tai Cang; many were damaged in the fight. 3 4
  • Purple Lightning Hammer — Used to attack Yunxiao after he framed her over the Primordial Golden Dou incident. 72
  • Spatial jade talisman — Allowed him to flee the Beast Realm after Tai Cang severed his arm. 24
  • Heaven and Earth Dharma Idol jade talisman — A high-grade divine ability talisman hidden in Duobao's storage ring; Tai Cang seized it after Duobao's escape. 24

Relationships

  • Tai Cang — Principal rival. Duobao repeatedly tried to suppress, defeat, or kill Tai Cang, viewing him as a threat to his authority; Tai Cang ultimately exposed Duobao's betrayal. 3 4 23 113
  • Tongtian — Sect master and former protector. Tongtian initially supported Duobao's authority, but later confined him, revoked his personal-disciple status, and allowed sect reforms that diminished his influence. 4 14 24 73
  • Yunxiao — Rival for control within the Intercepting Sect. Duobao undermined her authority by teaching registered disciples and framing her over the Primordial Golden Dou. 71 72
  • Zhao Gongming — Later collaborator in Duobao's faction. Zhao Gongming supported him during the sect unrest but distanced himself after Duobao's Western Teachings allegiance was exposed. 112 113
  • Jieyin and Zhunti — Western Teachings patrons. Duobao secretly met with them, became their jointly taught disciple, and was protected by Zhunti when Tai Cang attempted to execute him. 111 113

Trivia

  • Duobao's attempt to seize administrative authority at the gathering directly caused the Intercepting Sect's personal disciples to split into competing factions. 3
  • His right arm was severed by Tai Cang in the Beast Realm, while his storage ring—and the Heaven and Earth Dharma Idol within it—was taken. 24
  • Despite calling himself the Intercepting Sect's Eldest Senior Brother, Duobao's personal-disciple status was formally abolished before his eventual admission that he had joined the Western Teachings. 73 113
