Background / History

Chen Mengchuan spent six years researching an artificial-intelligence project, beginning in graduate school and continuing through his work at Xia Science Academy. Though he possessed a doctorate and substantial AI expertise, his entry into the Academy was also enabled by his father Chen Bingzhou's professional connections. After Guo Zhidong placed his nephew Guo Siming over Chen's AI team, Chen resigned rather than remain under him. 1

Shortly afterward, Chen saw five-year-old Sun Weijie drowning in the Luoyin River. Despite local fears of “Luoyin Water Ghosts” and the inaction of the crowd, he entered the river to rescue the child. A rescue boat later pulled Chen from the water, and he woke in the hospital after nearly losing consciousness. 1 2 49

While unconscious, Chen experienced memories of a future in which humanity faced annihilation by an alien civilization within nine hours of the apocalypse.
