Gwen's Account of What Happened
Staring directly at Gwen Stacy's innocent-looking face, Henry asked aggressively, "How did you get this job? If Little Red hadn't been acting so unusually anxious, I might have overlooked the danger you're facing."
Gwen Stacy pouted and muttered, "Maybe it's better to be careless. I'm fine, so you didn't have to make a wasted trip."
"Hmm." Catherine Hepburn uttered the sound. The old woman raised an eyebrow, Gwen Stacy immediately drooped her head, looking dejected.
Gwen Stacy immediately lowered her head. "I'm sorry, I was wrong."
"Where did we go wrong?" Catherine Hepburn asked.
"Where did I go wrong... wait, I didn't go wrong. From the beginning, nobody knew things would turn out this way. Professor Ross and I both thought it was just a routine investigation and evaluation."
With her clear logic, Gwen Stacy quickly snapped out of her emotional distress at being unjustly accused.
Seeing how clueless Gwen, how could she possibly outwit Henry Catherine Hepburn, who was full of empty talk and had the old man's sharp eyes? It's true that Hepburn played dumb with men, but she wasn't stupid enough to not distinguish between lies and the truth.
Sighing inwardly, Catherine Hepburn earnestly advised the college-aged girl, "Gwen, I'm not criticizing you for doing anything wrong, but rather telling you that you shouldn't ignore the care and concern of others."
"Shouldn't you be explaining things properly at a time like this to put everyone at ease? Or did you just tell George, 'Don't worry about anything, I'm back safe and sound'?"
"Speaking like that is like implying to others that I will do the same thing next time I encounter a similar situation. Over time, people will give up on caring about you. You don't think that's a good thing, do you?"
"Of course, if you feel our concern is unimportant, then you don't need to say anything to reassure us. Even just making excuses would be better; then we understand your attitude." Gwen Stacy, head bowed, finally understood the old woman's meaning. "Kate, that's not what I meant. I just didn't know how to tell you."
"Because it felt like I was just going to the supermarket to buy some milk, but somehow I ended up at an amusement park and got on a death roller coaster. I was completely confused about how it all happened."
Well, encountering this situation can indeed be quite unsettling. Catherine Hepburn felt as if, during filming, the director had originally planned to shoot a funeral scene for that day.
All the emotions were built up, but when we got to the set, it was suddenly changed to filming a wedding. So, I had to walk down the aisle with a long face, showing the director the consequences of arbitrarily changing the shooting schedule.
"Okay, Gwen, just think it through. Say whatever comes to mind. You should know that the news media has been reporting extensively on the situation in Raccoon City these past two days, and those horrific images. Knowing you were there, we were incredibly worried."
Gwen Stacy tilted her head, trying to recall what had happened a few days ago. "At first, I was at Culver University in Virginia, and besides touring the university, I helped Professor Ross with some trivial things in the lab."
"Because Professor Ross is a graduate student at University of California, Berkeley, no one came with her. The only people she can find on the East Coast are me."
"Later, she received a temporary assignment from the military. It was actually a report from the local police station that a vampire Monster had appeared, and the military had to send an assessment team to determine whether the reported situation was a general criminal case or Vampires Plague."
"As a civilian scientist, Professor Ross only needs to determine the possible cause of the victim's condition; or, if the police catch the perpetrator, confirm whether the perpetrator is Vampires."
"It's really just a biological test report, then you sign it, and the job is done. Since most things are handled by the soldiers, it's quite safe, which is why Professor Ross asked me if I was interested in participating, as I could get some compensation from the military."
"Who knew that this time we would encounter a completely different situation. Some people who were not bitten by the reported Monster also underwent mutation and transformation. The first example appeared among the soldiers who were protecting us."
"Professor Ross therefore concluded that this wasn't a plague caused by Vampires, but something worse that could spread through the air or other mediums." Skye interrupted, asking, "Since you know it's some kind of infectious disease, and not caused by Vampires, why don't you leave?"
Gwen Stacy said earnestly, "Because Professor Ross believes we may all be infected, just not showing symptoms yet. So we dare not leave Raccoon City before confirming the situation, lest we spread the disease."
"As things worsened, with Zombies -like Monster attacking the military's makeshift testing site, the X-Men appeared. They descended from the sky and instantly crushed the Monster that were difficult to kill even with bullets."
"Fortunately, the X-Men helped deal with the Zombies. Because the military initially expected Monster like Werewolves and Vampires, a significant portion of their ammunition was designed to target weaknesses, such as UV Bullets and Silver Nitrate Bullets."
"However, Zombies are immune to UV Bullets or Silver Nitrate Bullets, so the army has limited ammunition at its disposal. Given the unclear situation, the commander dared not rashly request supply teams to enter the area and deliver ammunition."
Lorna Dane also asked, "What about airdrop supplies?"
Gwen Stacy tilted her head and thought for a moment. "I think I heard someone mention this problem, something about how the drop points are hard to control and how our ammunition hasn't dropped below our supply line yet. Also, we haven't decided whether to hold our ground or retreat."
"In short, this problem is no longer a major concern after the X-Men joined the battle. However, the X-Men have their own plans and arrangements, so they did not rendezvous with the military."
"We are just an assessment team, not the overall commander of the crisis management. In terms of our mission and authority, we really cannot ask the X-Men for cooperation."
"So Professor Ross came up with a compromise: she and I would work with the X-Men. The military's role remained the same: to cooperate with us civilian scientists."
"Afterwards, the X-Men- Men identified the culprit behind the disaster, found research data on the virus, and developed Antiviral Serum to combat it. They then released it on a large scale, decisively resolving the disaster."
"After the X-Men left, we stayed for a while. This was because Professor Ross's father, General Ross, took over the situation in Raccoon City and organized an epidemic prevention operation. "The main task was to clear out the corpses that had turned into Zombies, register and catalog them, and then cremate them after they were claimed by their families. Traditional burials were not allowed."
"Professor Ross and I stayed behind not only to ensure there were no residual viruses in our bodies, but also to provide temporary guidance to the military on epidemic prevention until more professional epidemiologists arrived."
"These tasks were actually completed yesterday. I also returned to Virginia on a military transport plane with Professor Ross. But given what happened, the professor told me to go home and rest first, and that things at the university weren't urgent."
"That's what I've been through these past few days. I've already gone to see George. But Skye told me, Kate you were also worried about me, so I thought I should come and let you know I'm alright."
