An invitation from the New York Continental Hotel
After glancing at the handsome Slavic man and seeing that he had no objections, Henry introduced them, "Catherine, this is Mr. John Wick, a friend I met in Los Angeles."
"John, this is Ms. Catherine Hepburn, my employer. And that Tabby Cat is Kitty, my pet."
John Wick stared strangely at the enormous Tabby Cat, weighing over six hundred pounds. It felt like someone was wielding an RPG...
When I came out, I told others that it was just like a rocket. Aside from the fact that they both fly into the sky, they seem to be quite different.
The elderly woman who approached him greeted him first, saying, "Mr. Wick, it's an honor to meet you."
John Wick, sporting a rare, hearty smile, gentlemanly gave her a kiss on the hand and greeted her, "Ms. Katharine Hepburn, it's an honor to meet you. You're a superstar I've always wanted to meet in person."
"Ideally, it would look like it did sixty or seventy years ago. Is that what you're thinking?" The old lady's sharp remark left the handsome Slavic man slightly embarrassed.
John Wick's embarrassed look made Catherine Hepburn laugh heartily. She patted the young man on the arm and said, "I was just kidding, you don't mind, do you? I'm still happy that someone likes me, no matter what stage of my life I'm in."
Before the seemingly dull-looking handsome man could reply, Catherine Hepburn snatched the chain from Henry's hand and said, "Let me walk Kitty around. You two seem to have something to say, don't you?"
Before Henry could respond, the old woman shook the chain in her hand and said, "Good kitty, come walk with the old lady. Don't disturb their sweet nothings."
Do you know what the biggest cultural impact of Henry's translation and compilation of * Love from a Different Culture * was? It was the early invasion of United States's "BL" (Boys' Love) culture from the island nation of Japan.
Actually, saying it was an early invasion isn't entirely accurate. As early as the 1960s in the United States, female readers were the primary audience for fanfiction based on Star Trek.
By the 1990s, this type of subject matter was known as slashfiction in the United States and was serialized in specialized magazines.
However, "Love from a Different Culture" broadened the horizons of women, who began to seek excitement outside of the United States.
Japan's BL (Boys' Love) culture is thus vividly displayed before our eyes.
Putting aside the differences in explicitness between the US and Japan, and the question of which is more explicit or more subtle, the novelty and stimulation of foreign culture has created a huge trend, even expanding the market for female readers!
The original readership might have been only one or two million people, but now it has expanded to three to five million. Translated BL (Boys' Love) literature from abroad has thus entered the United States market and has been—well, not well-received.
Because it's not easy to openly discuss such matters in this era, even die-hard readers might not dare to proclaim them in public. But their attitude, expressed through their wallets, is quite clear.
As a grandmother with a rather progressive personality and views, although she preferred painting to reading compared to another Hepburn, she still loved these kinds of books, which is why she made such a witty remark about Henry and John Wick today.
Henry, who almost always grants this old lady's requests, has very few exceptions, one of which is reading aloud such books!
As a Kryptonian, if I were forced to read this kind of book aloud, I'd rather turn back time and go back to the past to eradicate this kind of culture, its creators, and its disseminators in their infancy. Even if it meant a Carnage, I wouldn't blink an eye!
Fortunately, Catherine Hepburn wouldn't insist on Henry doing things she had already drawn the red line about. This old lady was a master of navigating boundaries. As for her everyday ramblings and teasing, well, that was something he just had to swallow.
The situation was the same today. Henry made a disgusted face, waved the Tabby Cat, and said, "Kitty, run away. Catherine needs to double her exercise today. Otherwise, she'll have too much energy and won't be able to hold back her tongue."
The old lady, leading Kitty away, complained, "Talking has nothing to do with being tired. Your plan won't work; it's just making things difficult for me."
"Spare me, Catherine, I can't hold on much longer," Henry pleaded.
The smug old lady led Kitty away amidst the gasps of the others. Henry then looked at John Wick and asked, "John —well, may I just call you John? Although I already have."
"Sure."
"Alright, John, just get to the point. I don't think you've come here just to catch up. Or do you need my help with something? That's fine too."
John Wick pulled an invitation from his pocket. With a hint of resignation, he said, "I'm here as a messenger today."
Accepting the invitation, "The Russian Mob?" Henry hadn't forgotten whose side John Wick had been on when they first met.
However, Henry was wrong this time. John Wick said, "I'm here on behalf of the Continental Hotel in New York to deliver this invitation. Winston wishes to meet you."
Henry asked, "Who is Winston?"
Winston Scott, manager of the Continental Hotel in New York. Their address is in Lower Manhattan Manhattan, New York City.
Henry chimed in, "2077 Mannoway Street, 23rd block, Special District. Right? I know where the New York Continental Hotel is, but I just can't muster the energy to go there."
"Why?" John Wick asked in surprise.
Henry shrugged and said, "I don't have a very good impression of Los Angeles."
"Moonnie Fisher, she's not an easy person to deal with." John Wick then waved the invitation in his hand and added, "But don't worry, Winston has a long-term vision and won't make that kind of mistake."
"Really?" Despite his skepticism, Henry accepted the invitation and opened it to see what was inside.
John Wick continued, "Actually, Winston wanted to visit you in person, but he doesn't know either of you and doesn't think you'd like us bringing things to that lady's home. So, the only option left is to invite you to the Continental Hotel."
"Hmm, I understand. There's no time listed here, does that mean I can go anytime?" Henry asked, looking at the formally worded invitation.
"Yes, anytime is fine."
"Okay, I'll go over there in the next couple of days." Putting the invitation in his pocket, Henry asked curiously, "Aren't you working for the Russia? And you're acting as a messenger?"
John Wick said, "I was first a contract gunman for the Continental Hotel, and then a henchman for the Tarasov Mob. Vig Tarasov recruited me. He had access to people in the High Table, which is one of the reasons I helped him."
"And because I know you, Winston asked me to be this messenger. He sent many men to look for you before, but I heard they all returned empty-handed."
Having gotten used to hiding from the police, the FBI, and trouble in Los Angeles, Henry always avoids anyone who tries to bump into him on the street. He certainly doesn't care at all about the people the Continental Hotel sent earlier.
Henry, simply out of curiosity, asked, "From the Continental Hotel platform, to the High Table. You want to climb up there?" This didn't seem like an ambitious person.
John Wick paused for a moment, then shook his head and said, "I don't know if I want to climb to a higher position. It's just following my instincts."
Indeed, this person's behavior doesn't seem like a well-thought-out choice; it's all impulsive action.
