In English, some names were fairly gender-neutral and used by both men and women. Charlie and Rowan were examples of such neutral names. Or names like Michel and Michelle, which sounded very similar and relied on differences in stress to distinguish gender.

People with such names usually used diminutives or nicknames to make the way they were addressed sound more masculine or feminine.
