Background / History
Kazuto gave up kendo after repeatedly being outpaced by his childhood friend Seiya, but discovered that he had exceptional talent for games. Gaming became the one field where he could regularly defeat Seiya, deepening both his enthusiasm and their competitive friendship. 1
He was selected as an SAO beta tester and ensured that Seiya obtained a NERvGear headset for the open beta. Although he wanted his friend beside him, he also hoped his beta experience would finally let him surpass Seiya in swordsmanship. 1
Kirito entered SAO using the long-standing ID “Kirito” and a deliberately more mature-looking avatar. He initially acted as Seiya’s guide, explaining basic mechanics and leading Seiya and Klein to a quiet leveling area. 4 5 6
After SAO became a death game, Kirito relied on his beta knowledge to pursue early resources and survival opportunities. He fought alongside Seiya and Asuna in the first-floor boss raid, delivering the final strike against Kobold Lord Irvangu. 11 17 19
By the time Aincrad’s front line reached the thirtieth floor, Kirito was known as the Black Swordsman. Though he generally preferred solo play, he joined the Moonlit Black Cats and concealed his true strength and level because he valued the friendship he found there. 60
In Underworld, Kirito’s real-world memories were initially sealed, allowing him to live as though he were native to that world. After Seiya and Alice were lost in the Flaint Mountain Range incident, he trained obsessively with Eugeo, discovered his sword-skill talent, and committed himself to rescuing Alice. 801 813 814
Appearance
Kirito’s real appearance is described as a youthful-faced boy. He routinely changes his in-game appearance to look more mature and rugged, often to Seiya’s amusement. 5 10 603 619
- In SAO, he used a mature, rugged avatar before the Mirror of Truth restored his youthful real appearance. 5 10
- In GGO, his rare M-9000 avatar gave him the appearance of a long-haired, dark-haired girl; he used the name Kiriko while concealing his identity. 277 285
- In Shangri-La Frontier, he created a taller avatar with a stern face and a scar. 619
Personality
Kirito is a highly competitive gamer whose desire to surpass Seiya is both a source of motivation and recurring insecurity. He is especially prone to jealousy when Seiya receives rare skills, special events, powerful equipment, or unusually rapid progression. 1 63 619 638
He begins as socially anxious and accustomed to playing alone, responding awkwardly to Klein’s friendliness. Nevertheless, he values genuine companionship deeply; his decision to join the Moonlit Black Cats and hide his strength came from his desire to belong among them. 5 6 60
Despite his insecurity, Kirito is loyal and protective. He repeatedly seeks Seiya’s assistance when others are in danger, worries about Seiya’s well-being, and chooses to preserve his bonds with Eugeo and Alice over immediately taking an overwhelmingly powerful Underworld Super Account. 60 825
