Background

The Senju and Uchiha were rival clans during the Warring States Period. Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha eventually made peace and founded Konohagakure, making both clans founding powers of the village. Under Hashirama, the Senju were considered the Ninja World's most prosperous clan. 1 33

The clan declined after the deaths of Hashirama and Tobirama Senju. Hashirama's grandson was killed in an explosive-tag trap, while his granddaughter left Konoha after her lover's death. Although the clan retained political influence through the Senju Lineage, its military strength and public standing deteriorated sharply. 1

By the time of the Ninja Academy entrance examination, only eight Senju children participated, and five were eliminated midway through the first round. Their shrinking enrollment and weak candidates had become public evidence of the clan's decline. 8 9

Wood Release Factor and Mutation

The clan's central crisis began when extremists contaminated the Senju underground water source with Hashirama Senju's cells. Because the Senju water supply had been separated from the rest of Konoha's by Tobirama Senju, only the clan consumed the contaminated water. 21

Every affected clansman carries diluted Hashirama cells, referred to as the Wood Release Factor. The Senju bloodline amplifies this factor, causing the clan to cultivate faster but making Mutation increasingly likely. 21 48

Mixed-Blood Debate

The clan's pure-blood policy became increasingly untenable as Mutation spread. Senju Sayuri, a mixed-blood Senju, was viewed as evidence that intermarriage could offer the clan a future, even if it meant the eventual dilution of the traditional Senju identity. 35 132

The Great Elder and other members remained divided over loosening marriage restrictions, while Sayuri argued that mixed blood was the only path by which the Senju could survive. 132

Political Position

Following its decline, the clan relied heavily on the Senju Lineage, an interest group composed of allied Konoha clans and ninja. Most Konoha ninja were aligned with this bloc, while the Uchiha remained politically isolated. 8

The Senju's political position later became a liability. During the Third Great Ninja War, senior Konoha figures viewed the clan's Mutations as an opportunity to obtain test subjects and weaken support for pure-blooded Senju. 205 322

After becoming Fourth Hokage, Shimura Danzō publicly revealed that Mutation Weapons had been created from living Senju clansmen. By distributing records of the clan's condition, he deliberately turned public opinion against the Senju and intensified their social isolation. 343

Jueming used Grass Release-derived construction techniques to rebuild the aging Senju compound. He promised free renovated homes to all clan members, replacing its deteriorating buildings with sturdy bamboo high-rises. 471 546

By the final settlement of Konoha's political conflict, the truth behind the original poisoning incident was exposed and those responsible were imprisoned. Momoka was healed, the Senju settlement remained intact, and Jueming formally presented himself as the clan's next head. 689 691 696
