"From now on, we're family."

"Pinky promise—you won't lie to me, Shisui-nii."

Muttering those words, the utterly exhausted Kagami slowly fell asleep on Shisui's back.

When Kagami woke again, he was already lying in his own bed at home. He got up and walked outside. When he reached the living room, he saw two bodies covered with white cloth. Shisui and Itachi stood beside them.

When Kagami came out, Shisui and Itachi turned their gazes toward him. They had been waiting quietly for him to wake, wanting to comfort him at his most painful moment. But now that Kagami was actually facing his parents, neither of them knew how to console him.

Kagami stared blankly at the two bodies covered by white cloth. Even without lifting it, he knew what lay beneath.

"How did my parents die?"

"They were captured by Danzo along with you. They supposedly committed suicide in prison afterward."

Looking at those eyes, Kagami felt neither joy nor sorrow—only endless fury.

"Danzo! Danzo! Did he force Father to kill Mother? Danzo!!!"

Kagami's voice wasn't loud. His body was still extremely weak. But the hatred within that voice was immense.

Afterward, Kagami asked Shisui to remove his father's Mangekyō Sharingan. He was afraid—afraid that one day Danzo would put those Mangekyō into his own eye sockets. If that happened, Kagami would feel nothing but disgust.

Over the next few days, Itachi and several Uchiha clan members helped Kagami bury his parents.

Kagami stood blankly before the gravestone as snow continued to fall.

Every so often, Kagami would bend down and brush the snow off his parents' gravestone.

"Father, Mother, are you cold?"

Kagami asked sincerely, as though they were still alive in this world. But no one answered him.

The snow fell heavier and heavier, and the snow accumulated faster as well. Kagami bent down once more to brush it from his parents' gravestone.

Many people in Konoha were celebrating the arrival of the new year. Even Naruto was grinning from ear to ear. Although no one played with him, seeing everyone else so happy made him unable to keep from feeling happy too.

"That's Kagami!"

Naruto recognized him. That person was the super-genius from their year. After the previous semester ended, he had graduated early and become a Genin.

"Kagami! Kagami!"

Naruto waved as he shouted toward Kagami.

Kagami, walking along the road, froze. He had just returned from his parents' grave. Why was someone suddenly calling out to him?

He looked toward the voice and saw a blond boy.

"Naruto?"

"Yeah, yeah, it's me! You didn't forget me, did you? Sure, graduating early and becoming a Genin is a little impressive, but don't forget—sooner or later, I'll make you willingly fight me! Then I'll defeat you myself and make you admit defeat wholeheartedly! Hahahaha!"

Kagami smiled faintly.

"Is that so? Then I'll be waiting."

Naruto frowned. He felt that something about Kagami's smile was strange. It seemed... seemed to contain a trace of sadness. But how could someone have such a strange smile? What had happened to him?

Naruto asked softly. He instinctively wanted to smooth away that sadness. That was simply his nature—he wanted to help Kagami.

"Kagami, what's wrong?"
