Background / History

Rick was a King County sheriff before the outbreak. While he lay unconscious in the county hospital, Leon identified him as a survivor worth recruiting and eventually returned to King County to recover him. Rick awoke after being brought to the Umbrella Base, reuniting with Lori, Carl, and Shane. 3 20 29 32

After recovering, Rick was trusted with a defensive position during Leon's mission to the Georgia Institute of Technology emergency shelter. He later transferred with Shane to the base's internal patrol unit so they could remain near Lori during her difficult pregnancy. The two former sheriffs also became instructors for the Security Department's shooting classes. 34 61

Rick joined the Stinger Squad alongside Shane and other elite fighters. During the Outpost Network Plan's first deployment, he and Shane were assigned to West Virginia with a five-person support squad. Their team cleared Mansfield Public Prison of more than a thousand zombies and evaluated it as a future stronghold. 105 132 133

In Ohio, Rick favored negotiating with the Salvation Army before starting a war, despite Shane's objections. Leon supported this approach with armored vehicles, tanks, troops, and anesthetic smoke intended to capture enemy soldiers and create leverage for talks. 157

Rick later joined Shane and Colonel Glenn in assisting the Federation against sea raiders. During a later coastal trip with fellow survivors, Rick was abducted and transported by sea; Human Alliance intelligence subsequently located the cruise ship believed to be holding him and the others. 187 194 195

Personality

Rick retains a strong commitment to justice, kindness, equality, and freedom even after years in the apocalypse. He is among the most outspoken opponents of policies he believes compromise those ideals. 126

He prioritizes saving survivors and avoiding unnecessary bloodshed. When confronting the Salvation Army, he argued that its thousands of members could not all be treated as irredeemable enemies and deserved an opportunity for peaceful resolution. 152 153 157

Although more idealistic than Shane, Rick can adapt to practical survival concerns. He accepted Shane's argument that a defensible prison was more suitable than a spacious school for an outpost, and he relies on coordinated planning rather than acting alone. 133
