Background & History

Chen Qing was part of Professor Chen Renfeng's archaeological team investigating an ancient city beneath Fuxian Lake. He helped set up the apparatus intended to extract memories from the preserved corpses resembling himself and Bai Xue. When the experiment created a spacetime vortex, Chen Qing held onto Bai Xue while Chen Renfeng held his wrist, and the three were pulled into the unknown. 1

In the mysterious realm that followed, Chen Qing was frightened and disoriented, seeing a woman's face on a leopard where the others initially saw none. The fantasy forest projected his private memories and feelings for Bai Xue, leaving him embarrassed and vulnerable. He nevertheless continued alongside the group through the trials. 2

After realizing they were likely trapped inside the Twin Fish Jade Pendant's Small World, Chen Qing reconstructed the accident step by step. The realization that the experiment had stranded them overwhelmed him; he struck Chen Renfeng and Bai Xue before collapsing in tears. 6 7

Chen Qing helped establish a permanent life in the Small World. He designed the layout of the “Home of Immortals and Mortals” courtyard, assisted with its construction, and embraced cultivation after Chen Renfeng supplied the group with manuals, pills, furnaces, puppets, and materials. 12 16 17

When the White Deer Immortal reclaimed the Twin Fish Jade Pendant, Chen Qing and Bai Xue were left alone in the divided Small World. After grieving, he steadied himself and continued cultivating with Bai Xue, eventually reaching Foundation Establishment and Golden Core. 18 24

The Great General's Nascent Soul later attempted to seize Chen Qing's body. Chen Renfeng's protective talisman delayed the possession long enough for Chen Renfeng to intervene, destroy the Nascent Soul through the Law of Reincarnation, and use its cultivation to help Chen Qing form his Golden Core. 24

Although Chen Qing learned that returning to his original era required mastery of the Laws of Time and Space, he chose to remain in the Small World and cultivate toward the True Immortal Realm. 25 By the time he reached Body Integration, however, he was notably behind Bai Xue because he spent much of his time building recreational inventions rather than cultivating. 49

Personality

Chen Qing initially presents himself as serious, earnest, and procedure-conscious. He was wary of Chen Renfeng's unauthorized experiment and repeatedly tried to rationally explain their displacement into the jade pendant. 1 6 7

He can also be impulsive when frustrated or frightened. He recklessly pursued the leopard-woman after the second trial, became despondent when blocked by an invisible barrier, and reacted violently when the reality of their situation finally sank in. 2 3 6

Chen Qing is attentive toward Bai Xue. He treated and bandaged her injured foot, carried her when she could not walk, shielded her from the Nascent Souls, and remained concerned for her safety throughout their isolation. 4 19 20 Their feelings for one another are apparent, though neither was ready to commit to marriage when Chen Renfeng raised the matter. 2 17

His later behavior reveals a playful but undisciplined side. He prefers making puppets, soccer games, billiard tables, and bicycles to sustained cultivation. He can be insensitive when pursuing control or amusement, including forcing a white swan into submission and treating it cruelly. 19 33 39 49
