Background / History

At five and a half, Kakashi welcomed new students to Konoha’s Ninja Academy. His first encounter with Kagami Uchiha quickly became a rivalry: Kagami defeated him in a training fight with Sharingan genjutsu. Kakashi responded by intensifying his training and asking his father, Hatake Sakumo, to teach him swordsmanship 1 4 5.

When Sakumo was condemned for abandoning a mission to save his comrades, Kakashi struggled with the choice between duty and teammates. Sakumo’s subsequent departure left him grieving. Kakashi later passed Jiraiya’s assessment, becoming a fellow disciple of Kagami and a junior disciple of Minato 7 14 18.

During the Third Shinobi World War, Kakashi led Obito and Rin on a supply mission. After the apparent death of Obito and then Rin’s death, he was left overwhelmed by guilt. Sakumo intervened when Obito returned and attacked him 46 60 73.

Kakashi later devoted himself to finding Obito and bringing him back. He learned the Flying Thunder God Technique for that purpose and repeatedly visited the Akatsuki in the Land of Rain. On one visit with Might Guy, both were badly wounded fighting Kakuzu and Konan; Kakashi used Flying Thunder God to get Guy to safety 108 109 118.

Appearance

Kakashi has white or silver-white hair and habitually wears a mask 1 46 178.

  • Eyes: Kagami likens his expression to “dead fish eyes” 1.
  • Hair: As a child, his hairstyle is compared to a broom 1.
  • Weapon: He carries a short sword, later used with Lightning Release 46 72.

Personality

As a child, Kakashi is capable and composed, but Kagami’s provocations readily anger him. Over time, their exchanges become more dry and sarcastic. His defeats initially drive him to train harder, though he eventually recognizes the gap between himself and Kagami 1 5 18 47.

Kakashi remains fiercely loyal to his friends. He is willing to risk his life to bring Obito home, but refuses to sacrifice Guy for that goal 108 109.
