Background / History

Sukuna was once a human sorcerer from the peak era of sorcery a thousand years before the story. He defeated all other sorcerers alone, becoming the feared symbol of evil known as the King of Curses. His name derives from a mythical two-faced, four-armed demon. 1

He arrives in the Ninja World bound inside Kagami Uchiha’s mental space, separated from Kagami by a vermilion gate and a powerful seal. Kagami regards him not as a partner but as nourishment for his own growth, steadily drawing on and absorbing his Yin-aligned Cursed Energy. 1 2 9

Sukuna initially seeks even brief periods of freedom, offering to teach Kagami domains and the Ten Shadows Technique in exchange for time outside. Kagami refuses, arguing that the Ninja World contains sealing techniques and beings dangerous enough to suppress Sukuna permanently. 12

Over time, Kagami strengthens the Gate of Seal with resources including Sukuna’s own power, the Dragon Vein, the Six Paths Stone Tablet, and the Box of Ultimate Bliss. Sukuna remains imprisoned but studies Kagami’s battles, chakra system, and sealing methods while waiting for a decisive opportunity. 58 83 95 102

Appearance

When fully freed, Sukuna manifests as a tall, four-armed demon god with short dark-purple hair, four twisted eyes, and a large mouth in his abdomen. His body is covered in mysterious black markings. 166

  • Four muscular arms.
  • Four eyes, arranged as two pairs.
  • Dark-purple hair.
  • Black markings across his body.
  • A mouth embedded in his abdomen.
  • An oppressive blood-red and black aura associated with killing intent. 166

Personality

Sukuna is a thoroughgoing egoist who sees other people as food rather than equals. Kagami describes him as evil by nature and willing to kill women and children for pleasure; Sukuna’s own conduct consistently reflects that contempt for life. 2 66

He respects strength, conviction, and battle talent. He takes notice of fighters such as Hiruzen Sarutobi and Hatake Sakumo, and he eventually acknowledges Kagami’s patience and willingness to cultivate a worthy opponent. 9 155

Despite his arrogance, Sukuna is not reckless. He retreats from hopeless situations, studies unfamiliar powers carefully, and waits rather than acting without confidence. His fixation on Kagami ultimately becomes more than simple hostility: he views Kagami as his trial, rival, and the person he is destined to pursue. 48 67 102 198

Abilities & Skills

Cursed Energy

Sukuna possesses immense Cursed Energy derived from negative emotions. In the Ninja World, it functions as an exceptionally potent form of Yin-aligned spiritual energy. 2 4

  • Can supply Kagami with power in battle. 50
  • Grows stronger by absorbing negative energy from war, corpses, bloodshed, and the Ninja World’s hostility. 51
  • Can rapidly regenerate severe injuries. 68
  • Initially differs fundamentally from chakra and cannot directly overcome certain chakra-based defenses or seals. 68

Slashing Techniques

Sukuna’s primary attacks are invisible cutting techniques adapted to the target and the energy involved. 6 67

  • Kai — continuous ordinary slashes, compared to a chef’s knife within Malevolent Shrine. 67
  • Hachi — a stronger, charged slash intended to sever targets decisively; outside Malevolent Shrine, it normally requires physical contact. 20 67
  • Can adjust Hachi’s intensity according to the target’s Cursed Energy and durability. 20
  • His fully chanted world-cutting slash, commonly called Space Slash, severs space itself rather than merely cutting what occupies it. 83 90
  • Space Slash is less effective in the Ninja World because its energy level differs from the world in which Sukuna originally developed it. 90

Malevolent Shrine

Sukuna’s Domain Expansion manifests a grotesque shrine of giant teeth and bone-like steps. Rather than enclosing opponents in a sealed barrier, it designates an open area as Sukuna’s “kitchen,” where all within become ingredients subject to constant slashing. 67

  • Contains Kai’s nonstop slashes and Hachi’s decisive cutting attack. 67
  • Its open structure allows free entry and exit in exchange for a larger area of effect. 67
  • Expanded from a 400-meter diameter to a 1,000-meter diameter against the Nine-Tails. 67
  • Can slice terrain, trees, and stone throughout its range. 67
  • The Nine-Tails’ rapid regeneration and adaptation rendered its slashes largely ineffective. 67

Ten Shadows Technique and Mahoraga

Sukuna possesses the Ten Shadows Technique and can summon its strongest shikigami, Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General Mahoraga. 12 66

  • Mahoraga carries the positive-energy-coated Demon-Slaying Sword. 66
  • Its wheel rotates as it adapts to attacks; repeated exposure accelerates adaptation. 67
  • It was used to delay and adapt to the Nine-Tails’ attacks. 66 67

Chakra and Yin Release Adaptation

After battling the Nine-Tails, Sukuna studies chakra and learns to convert his own energy into it. 68

  • Can wield chakra after adapting to Kagami’s body. 66
  • Converts Cursed Energy into chakra to challenge the seal binding him. 68
  • Later transforms his Cursed Energy completely into Yin Release Chakra. 167
  • Can imitate Yin-Yang Release and Flame Release after gaining sufficient understanding, though Kagami’s original techniques remain superior. 167

Reverse Cursed Technique

Sukuna understands Reverse Cursed Technique and offers to repair Kagami’s damaged body in exchange for teaching it to him. 66

  • Can use it to restore himself, though doing so around Kagami risks allowing Kagami to learn the technique first. 68
  • His healing and adaptation are central to his prolonged battle against the Nine-Tails. 68

Relationships

  • Kagami Uchiha — Host, jailer, rival, and object of Sukuna’s obsession. Kagami treats Sukuna as a source of power and deliberately cultivates him as a future challenge; Sukuna seeks to surpass and ultimately devour Kagami. 1 35 155 167 198
  • Kurama / Nine-Tails — Initially a target Sukuna wants to kill, later regarded as secondary equipment compared with the power Sukuna expects to gain from Ōtsutsuki Isshiki. Their battle forces Sukuna to adapt to chakra. 66 67 68 127
  • Uchiha Shisui — Opponent during Sukuna’s liberation on the Moon. Sukuna destroys Shisui’s Susanoo and later crushes his heart, though Shisui survives through Izanagi. 169 172
  • Uraume — Loyal associate in the Cursed World who witnesses Sukuna’s transformed state and accepts his determination to pursue Kagami. 198
  • Ōtsutsuki IsshikiA source of insight and power for Sukuna. Sukuna studies Isshiki after Kagami seals him and later uses Isshiki’s Black Eye during his battle with Kagami. 102 166

Story Role / Major Arcs

Imprisonment within Kagami

Sukuna begins the story sealed in Kagami’s mental space, where he is deprived of freedom and gradually exploited as a Cursed Energy source. His early role is that of an antagonistic inner entity constantly testing Kagami’s restraint and resolve. 1 2 9

War and the Nine-Tails Battle

Kagami begins using Sukuna’s Cursed Energy directly during his conflict with Uchiha Madara, giving Sukuna far greater access to the outside world. Sukuna later manifests through Kagami’s body to fight the Nine-Tails, summons Mahoraga, and deploys Malevolent Shrine. 50 66 67

Sealed Asset and Patient Rival

Kagami further reinforces Sukuna’s confinement while using the Dragon Vein, the Six Paths Stone Tablet, and other immense energy sources. Sukuna studies Kagami’s methods, waits for a better opening, and comes to understand that Kagami intentionally keeps him alive as a potential equal. 83 102 155

Liberation and Defeat

Sukuna is finally released during the final match on the Moon. He overwhelms several opponents, including Shisui, Orochimaru, and Nagato’s forces, but Kagami ultimately defeats him despite Sukuna’s transformation of all his Cursed Energy into Yin Release Chakra. 166 167 169 172 173
