Background / History

Orochimaru served as Konoha's supreme commander on the western front during the Third Shinobi World War. He proposed concentrating Konoha's forces for a direct assault on the Land of Wind, accepting the risk that Iwagakure might exploit the weakened Land of Fire border. He also assigned Minato Namikaze and Kagami Uchiha to contain Iwagakure's jinchūriki threat. 23

His interest in Kagami began as suspicion and quickly became fascination. After being caught in Kagami's genjutsu, Orochimaru investigated the young Uchiha's unusually broad skill set and concluded that conventional methods such as poison or ambush would be ineffective against him. 19 22

Following Hiruzen Sarutobi's death, Orochimaru became the Fourth Hokage and prepared Konoha for the Uchiha rebellion. He evacuated civilians, strengthened the village barrier, recalled border forces, and obtained the Scroll of Seals to use Impure World Reincarnation as a contingency. 74
