Background

Tongtian is one of the Three Pure Ones and attained sainthood through the Human Race, leaving him with karmic obligations toward humanity. When Jiang Chen publicly exposed this debt, Tongtian chose not to punish the mortal; instead, he offered to accept him as a disciple, partly resolving that karma. 3

After rival great powers attempted to recruit Jiang Chen, Tongtian openly asserted his claim and accepted Jiang Chen as the Intercepting Sect’s Senior Disciple and the first disciple of the Three Pure Ones. 3 4 He subsequently supported Jiang Chen in obtaining gifts from Laozi, Yuanshi, and other powerful cultivators. 4 5

Following the Three Pure Ones’ separation, Tongtian left Kunlun Mountain with Jiang Chen and found Golden Ao Island in the East Sea, establishing it as his cultivation ground and the foundation of the Intercepting Sect. 13 He later preached to all beings without discrimination and opened the sect to cultivators of suitable talent. 20

Tongtian used Jiang Chen’s Kongtong Seal as the eye suppressing the Intercepting Sect’s fortune, allowing the sect’s destiny, immortal energy, and laws on Golden Ao Island to flourish. 56

Tongtian is straightforward, magnanimous, and notably unwilling to hold petty grudges. He initially remains welcoming toward Laozi and Yuanshi despite ideological differences, but he draws an absolute line when Yuanshi insults the disciples of the Intercepting Sect. 3 256

He values “teaching without discrimination,” accepting beings regardless of race or origin into the Intercepting Sect. This principle places him in direct conflict with Yuanshi’s contempt for non-human cultivators. 20 288

Toward Jiang Chen, Tongtian is fiercely protective, proud, and paternal.
