Background / History
Zhunti and Jieyin preside over the Western Religion, whose western territory is described as impoverished in both Spiritual Treasures and talented cultivators. The pair lecture personally and lower the threshold for discipleship to the point that anyone who understands their teachings may become an outer disciple, yet still struggle to recruit worthy followers 26.
His pursuit of talented converts brings him into conflict with Jiang Chen. Zhunti identifies Jiang Chen as possessing the “root of wisdom” for the Western Religion and repeatedly claims that Jiang has a destined connection to the West. He later tries to convert Jiang through a manifestation, only for Jiang to deceive the manifestation, seize the Green Lotus Precious Color Banner, and refuse the offer 26 141.
Zhunti subsequently sends his avatar, Old Ancestor Bodhi, after Jiang Chen. Bodhi battles Jiang through successive transformations and attempts to draw him into the Western Religion, but Jiang escapes using the Seventy-Two Transformations. Suspecting Tongtian has concealed the heavenly secrets, Bodhi retreats 75. Zhunti also forcefully takes Golden Cicada to the West after the latter rejects his recruitment 102.
During the Witch-Demon War, Zhunti dispatches Bodhi to the Solar Star. Disguised as an injured minor demon, Bodhi persuades Di Jun’s Golden Crow sons that the Demon Race is being massacred, prompting them to leave the Solar Star 103. Jiang Chen later publicly accuses Zhunti of instigating the Witch-Demon conflict 159.
Zhunti repeatedly acts against Jiang Chen’s growth: he ambushes him, attempts to disrupt his breakthroughs, and seeks to suppress or kill him alongside Jieyin. Tongtian repeatedly intervenes on Jiang’s behalf, turning their conflict into a prolonged feud between the Intercepting Sect and the Western Religion 94 140 141.
The feud culminates at Mount Sumeru. After Jiang Chen destroys Zhunti’s clone and leads the Intercepting Sect against the Western Religion, Zhunti confronts him directly while Jieyin is occupied by Tongtian’s Immortal Slaying Sword Formation 155 156 160. Zhunti is ultimately overwhelmed after Jiang Chen proves his Dao, is killed by the Nine Spears of Heaven-Opening, and later reforms with diminished cultivation 174 179 180. He continues fighting beside Jieyin but later retreats from Jiang Chen together with his senior brother 181 264.
Appearance
Zhunti is portrayed as a gaunt, sallow-complexioned old Daoist. In battle, he wears black-and-white Daoist robes and can display a fierce, Vajra-like expression when enraged 155 173 177.
- Sallow or yellowed complexion 155 180
- Gaunt elderly Daoist appearance 155
- Black-and-white Daoist robes 173
- Curly hair that rises when he is enraged 177
- Can transform into Bodhi wood to evade attacks 175
Personality
Zhunti is ambitious and opportunistic, especially where recruitment might strengthen the Western Religion. Its poor foundation and lack of talented disciples drive his fixation on potential converts such as Jiang Chen and Golden Cicada 26 102.
He is calculating in conflict. He obscures heavenly secrets, creates an avatar to manipulate the Golden Crows, attacks Jiang Chen during vulnerable moments, and attempts to undermine Jiang’s Dao Heart after reforming 75 103 140 181.
His pride is easily wounded despite his status. Jiang Chen’s refusal, Tongtian’s public condemnation, and the Western Religion’s defeats repeatedly provoke his anger; when faced with Jiang’s later power, he becomes fearful and seeks Jieyin’s assistance 141 160 181.
