After receiving Dragon's call, Garp was in the woods outside Riverwave Village.
Bogard was not with him, having disguised himself and entered the village to watch over Luffy in secret.
This was what had happened.
That day, Luffy and Golden Lion encountered Deviljho. Golden Lion, who had just eaten a Kirin horn, was no match for Deviljho.
Bogard stepped in and took Luffy away, while Garp rescued Golden Lion in time.
Afterward, Bogard followed Garp's instructions and brought Luffy to Midgard City at the westernmost edge of the continent.
Once his emotions had gradually settled down,
Garp told Luffy that Golden Lion was not dead, but he had ordered it not to leave the Primeval Forest.
So if Luffy wanted to see Golden Lion again, he had to cross the continent alone and return within a year.
If he failed, Garp would take him back to Sea Star, and he could forget about ever coming back for the rest of his life.
But if he succeeded, he would receive a reward: Golden Lion would be allowed to return with them.
After hearing that, Luffy did not consider the difficulty at all.
He was completely immersed in the joy of knowing Golden Lion was still alive, that he had a chance to see it again, and that they could live together on Sea Star.
And so,
after sharing a hearty dinner with Garp and Bogard,
Luffy ran out of Midgard City early the next morning and set off alone on the arduous journey across the continent.
Along the way, he encountered all kinds of complex environments: forests, mountains, swamps, lakes, volcanoes, plains, rivers, and more.
There were also the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, as well as attacks from all manner of terrifying monsters
