History

Sengoku served as a Navy Admiral under Fleet Admiral Kong. The two assigned him and Garp to retrieve Roger’s treasure, an escort mission Sengoku feared could draw Whitebeard, Charlotte Linlin, and Kaido into conflict with the Marines 69 180. During the military restructuring that followed the discovery of other worlds, Kong was promoted to Minister of the High Command and Sengoku succeeded him as Navy Fleet Admiral 181 260.

The new post brought repeated disputes over Navy resources. Sengoku objected when High Command transferred Marine officers to strengthen the Army, then reacted furiously to its plan to move Admiral Candidate Borsalino into the Air Force 265. He nevertheless took part in Otherworld operations, including the Demon Slayer World campaign, where he insisted that the invading forces avoid civilian casualties 356 357.

Sengoku had studied Buddhism for years, visiting temples and obtaining scriptures from other worlds. His study produced the Tathagata Divine Palm, but he remained uncertain how to reach the Daibutsu Fruit’s second awakening 1089 1827. Imu summoned him to the Four Souls World, gave him the Lotus Lantern and Pure World Auspicious Cloud, and directed him to cultivate there while Zephyr managed Marine Headquarters 1848.

After seven months without the breakthrough, Sengoku accepted Imu’s plan to seal his memories and abilities and send his consciousness through a hundred lives as monks in the Main God Space 2168. The accumulated suffering and insight brought him to enlightenment without abandoning his commitment to justice. He returned with a second Daibutsu awakening and later presented Imu with five sutras setting out his doctrine of protection and order 2551 2552 2556. Imu granted him the title of Buddha Lord and a realm in which to establish the Buddha Realm Pure Land 2553.

Following his return, Sengoku was selected to become Minister of the High Command, with Kuzan succeeding him as Navy Fleet Admiral 2556 2608.

Appearance

Sengoku is three meters tall and, while serving as Fleet Admiral, wears a white Coat of Justice. After his enlightenment, he has a cinnabar mark and a halo behind his head 1848 2556.

Sengoku is conscientious about the Navy’s duties and strength. He worries about threats to its reputation, resists transfers that weaken it, and objects to civilian casualties during conquest 69 265 357. His Daibutsu Fruit also sharpens his reasoning and ability to learn; even when angry, he can remain rational 677.

His Buddhist path does not lead him to renounce his sense of duty. After enlightenment, he defines his role as guarding the justice he recognizes and identifies the World Government’s order as the Correct Dharma he intends to protect 2551 2552.
