History

Shiryu served for years as Impel Down’s Chief Warden. Though nominally third in the prison hierarchy, he effectively answered only to Warden Columbus and held overwhelming authority over the other jailers. He routinely killed prisoners without authorization, viewing weaker people as entertainment and suitable blood for his sword, Raiu. Vice Warden Magellan repeatedly condemned these killings and openly admitted that he hated Shiryu. 34 35

He resigned from Impel Down and entered the Marines as a Headquarters Captain. Instead of reporting to Marineford, he was sent directly to join Vice Admiral Sakazuki as his adjutant. Shiryu’s view that pirates were worthless “trash” immediately satisfied Sakazuki, who entrusted him with leading the response to the pirate attack on the Medal Kingdom. 34 35

During the Medal Kingdom operation, Shiryu boarded pirate ships alone, killed Captain Cas and more than a hundred pirates within seconds, then crossed the sea using Geppo adapted to wave-stepping to continue the slaughter. Sakazuki acknowledged his strength but considered his preference for personally killing every pirate inefficient. 35 36

After later being transferred to Army Headquarters alongside other Marine officers, Shiryu continued serving at Sakazuki’s side. Over years of supervision, Sakazuki forced him to restrain his bloodlust, repeatedly warning that an Admiral required control over killing intent rather than its elimination. Shiryu eventually demonstrated progress by limiting a campaign of killings to the lords of enemy states rather than massacring everyone present. 270 907 984

While deployed in the Land of Rivers with Sakazuki’s forces, Shiryu was possessed in his sleep by the Ninja World Death God, the former evil god worshipped by the Evil God Cult. Initially hostile to the possession, he accepted coexistence after the entity offered the prospect of an immortal body. Sakazuki later discovered the secret, confirmed that Shiryu retained control of his own consciousness, and imposed a strict condition: if Shiryu killed indiscriminately or became mentally unstable, Sakazuki would destroy both him and the Death God. 1255 1256 1258

During the demon invasion of Wind Province, Shiryu arrived to support the Star Realm’s Third Infantry Division. He killed the Shadow Demon through his Death God-linked ability, then had the Death God devour its soul. His actions drew three Upper Tier Demons into a coordinated attack. 1528 1529

Nearly ten years after becoming Sakazuki’s first mate, Shiryu asked to leave the Army and transfer to the Yin-Yang Division. He sought greater freedom to hunt demons and yokai, particularly in worlds suffering spirit disasters. Sakazuki approved the request, while warning that he would personally eliminate Shiryu if he ever defied the World Government. 2187

Appearance

Shiryu is a burly man nearly three and a half meters tall, with an unusually broad, long chin and a persistent disturbing smile. He commonly wears a black Justice coat and carries a cigar, particularly when anticipating a battle or massacre. 6 35 1528

Personality

Shiryu is openly sadistic and finds personal satisfaction in cutting down enemies one by one. He values the sensation of his sword cutting flesh over quickly sinking ships or ending a battle efficiently. Pirates, prisoners, and most weaker people hold little value in his eyes. 34 35

Despite this cruelty, he is cautious around opponents he recognizes as stronger than himself. Sakazuki’s overwhelming presence keeps him from openly defying orders, and Shiryu chose to obey Sakazuki’s summons even when he feared it might lead to his execution. 35 1255

His years beside Sakazuki tempered—but did not erase—his killing urge. Shiryu learned to suppress indiscriminate slaughter when necessary, though he remains frustrated whenever his strength proves insufficient against major threats. 625 907 984
