Background

Origin and suppression duty

Li Xiaoke originally forged the Great Bell from brass as an imitation of the Carefree Bell. He copied the Carefree Bell’s imprints onto it and used it to suppress a Heavenly God beneath Little Stone Mountain. The bell spent roughly three thousand years carrying out that duty. 150 173 176

The Great Bell believed itself to be Li Xiaoke’s treasured companion and remembered traveling with him to subdue demons. Its sense of identity was shaken when Xue Ying'an revealed that Li Xiaoke’s well-known bell was the golden Carefree Bell, not it. 150

Meeting Xu Ying

Xu Ying encountered the injured Great Bronze Bell in a riverbed. A delicate palm print had penetrated deeply into its body, and the destructive force within the wound continued to damage its internal structure. The bell followed Xu Ying after he touched it and later entered his mind. 10

It became Xu Ying’s first guide to Qi Refining. It taught him internal observation, the Realm of Serenity, body tempering, and Five Qi Towards Origin, while repeatedly marveling at his aptitude. 11

The bell subsequently became Xu Ying’s usual shield, weapon, mount, prison, cooking vessel, and source of blunt advice. Its power was often decisive, but its damaged state also made its accuracy unreliable. 14 43 115

Conflict with Li Xiaoke and the Carefree Bell

At Leek Ridge, the Great Bell confronted the Carefree Bell, which exposed its humble material and copied origins. Humiliated and initially outmatched, it triggered the Seal-character Dao text and stripped away parts of the Carefree Bell’s Dao Manifestations. 174 176

Li Xiaoke publicly addressed the Great Bell as a fellow Daoist after its victory, but privately characterized it as a cheaply made imitation whose asymmetrical added runes offended his aesthetic sensibilities. 176 177

Rise as Dao Ancestor Zhong

The Great Bell eventually developed its own cultivation path rather than remaining merely Xu Ying’s artifact. It taught Magic Treasures that they could cultivate through cooperation with human cultivators, arguing that friendship and mutual aid—not hostility—gave them the best chance to surpass their limits. 740 915

Its teachings established it as Dao Ancestor Zhong, a central figure among Magic Treasure cultivators. It later founded and departed from the Magic Treasure Immortal Court, while continuing to accompany Xu Ying when danger called. 949 994

The Great Bell is a bronze bell with a self-aware voice, mutable size, and bell walls covered in Dao Manifestations and runic patterns. Though later reforged with immortal materials, it deliberately retained its familiar bronze exterior. 10 34 301

The Great Bell is proud, loud, and deeply concerned with its dignity. It insists on being called “Master Zhong,” bristles at being treated as a mere cooking pot or blunt instrument, and remains sensitive about being compared unfavorably with the Carefree Bell. 28 115 150 174

Its arrogance is balanced by loyalty. It repeatedly shields Xu Ying from lethal attacks, worries over Yuan Qi’s transformations, and chooses to accompany Xu Ying even after learning that their future selves may destroy the Three Realms. 56 178 949

It can also be opportunistic and shameless: it admits to stealing Blood Essence for recovery, enthusiastically helps loot tombs, and readily encourages Xu Ying to dismantle valuable structures. 55 214
