Background / History
Di Jun and his younger brother, Tai Yi, were among the earliest and strongest cultivators to reach Zixiao Palace for Hongjun's first sermon. He approached Fuxi about jointly establishing a clan, but Fuxi delayed his decision. 11
After rejecting Dong Wang Gong's attempt to recruit them, Di Jun and Tai Yi established the Demon Race. Di Jun became its Demon Emperor and began consolidating its power against Zifu Prefecture. 13 15 When Dong Wang Gong's forces provoked the Demon Race, Di Jun ordered full mobilization, later personally joining Tai Yi to defeat and kill Dong Wang Gong. 33 34
Struggle for the Heavenly Court
Guided by the River Diagram and Luo Book, Di Jun deduced that the newly discovered Heavenly Court resonated with Demon Race Destiny and could bring his people unprecedented prosperity. Nuwa's claim to the site brought him into direct conflict with her and Qing Xuan. 43
Hongjun's manifestation favored Di Jun and Tai Yi's claim, recognizing their responsibility for leading the Demon Race. However, Qing Xuan challenged Tai Yi for control of the Heavenly Court's upper layers; Di Jun was shocked when Qing Xuan withstood the Eastern Emperor Bell's sound waves with his body. 44 Afterwards, Di Jun identified Qing Xuan as a potential Witch Race-level threat and regarded him as an obstacle to the Demon Race. 45
Heavenly Marriage humiliation
Seeking Heavenly Dao Merit, control of the Moon Star, and a stronger Grand Formation of the Stars, Di Jun proposed a Heavenly Marriage with the Moon Goddesses Xihe and Changxi. The goddesses rejected him outright. 46 47
For the Demon Race's future, Di Jun set aside his pride and asked Nuwa to officiate the marriage. Qing Xuan exploited his desperation, arranged false brides, and accepted generous compensation from the Demon Race. 48 49 Although the ceremony granted merit, Di Jun discovered that his “brides” were disguised Moon Jade Rabbits rather than the true Moon Goddesses, making the deception public before the gathered Great Powers. 51 52
Conflict over the Primordial Violet Qi
After the failed marriage, Di Jun targeted Hongyun's Primordial Violet Qi as a possible route to Sagehood. He ordered the Demon Race to monitor Hongyun and move once he left Wuzhuang Temple. 54
Di Jun and Tai Yi later entered the pursuit of Hongyun. Though they initially arrived in a way that allowed Hongyun to escape other attackers, they continued pursuing the Violet Qi; Hongyun ultimately self-destructed, leaving the Demon Race empty-handed and injured. 56 57 In response, Di Jun resolved to follow the path of the Three Primordial Races by gathering Destiny and striving for Hunyuan. 58
When Kunpeng fled to the Heavenly Court, Di Jun accepted his submission and appointed him Demon Master for the benefit of the Demon Race, even though doing so brought Zhenyuanzi's revenge to his gates. 59 Di Jun and Tai Yi defended the Heavenly Court with the River Diagram, Luo Book, Grand Formation of the Stars, and Eastern Emperor Bell; their incomplete formation eventually drove back Zhenyuanzi. 60 61
First Witch–Demon War
The Witch Race attacked the Demon Race while the Heavenly Court was weakened. Di Jun answered the attacks with open fury, launching the Demon Race into war. 62 He and Tai Yi fought together to defend the Heavenly Court, but Pangu's True Body shattered the core of the Grand Formation of the Stars and severely wounded them. 64
Hongjun halted the war, decreeing a ten-Eon ceasefire in which Demons governed the heavens and Witches governed the earth. Di Jun outwardly accepted the edict, then ordered the Heavenly Court rebuilt and vowed that the Witch Race would repay its blood debt. 65 66
Losses, preparations, and distrust of the Sages
Di Jun later celebrated the forging of the Witch-Slaying Sword, a weapon made from countless human lives to counter the Witch Race. Qing Xuan infiltrated the Heavenly Court, took the weapon, purified it into the Human Emperor Sword, and publicly declared humanity's blood debt against the Demon Race. 72
After Hou Yi killed nine of Di Jun's ten Golden Crow sons, Di Jun attempted to kill Hou Yi in rage. Qing Xuan invoked Hongjun's prohibition against war, forcing Di Jun to retreat with his sole surviving son, Lu Ya. He and Tai Yi subsequently concluded that the Two Western Sages had used their children to provoke another Witch–Demon conflict. 84
Fearing for Lu Ya's safety, Di Jun personally asked Lao Tzu to accept his son as a disciple, invoking Lao Tzu's karmic connection to the Demon Teachings and the Demon Race. 86
When Lao Tzu, Primordial, Jieyin, and Zhunti arrived at the Heavenly Court offering “aid,” Di Jun recognized their hidden agendas but chose to use their support temporarily. He permitted Lao Tzu to regulate the Sun Star and allowed the other Sages limited access, while privately working with Tai Yi to improve the Grand Formation of the Stars and conceal its core methods. 95 96
Final strategy and death
As the ceasefire neared its end, Di Jun secretly entered the Underworld alone to negotiate with Qing Xuan, Houtu, and the Ancestral Witches. He argued that both the Demon and Witch races were disposable pieces in the Heavenly Dao and Sages' scheme, then proposed moving their decisive battle to the West to draw the Sages into the destruction. 97
The Ancestral Witches accepted the proposal. Di Jun returned to the Heavenly Court without revealing the plan even to Tai Yi, believing secrecy was essential to its success. 97 98 During the Western battle, Di Jun and Di Jiang deliberately directed the war's residual force toward Mount Sumeru, weakening the Western Sages' protections. 100
When the Heavenly Dao openly intervened through the Sages, Di Jun abandoned hope of saving the Demon Race through conventional victory. He entrusted its survival to Tai Yi, activated the Grand Formation of the Stars, and drew immeasurable stellar power into his own body. 103
Di Jun burned his Primordial Spirit and used the River Diagram and Luo Book to extract origin power from countless stars. The falling stars devastated the Western Lands and forced the Sages to defend themselves, but his body collapsed under the strain. Tai Yi withdrew the surviving Demon Race as Di Jun fell. 104
Personality
Di Jun is ambitious, imperious, and fiercely committed to the Demon Race's prosperity. He consistently evaluates territory, alliances, treasures, merit, and Destiny according to their strategic value to his people. His decision to claim the Heavenly Court and pursue a marriage with the Moon Goddesses both stemmed from this calculation. 43 46
Unlike Tai Yi's more direct temperament, Di Jun can suppress personal humiliation when he sees a greater benefit. He endured asking Nuwa for help with the Heavenly Marriage and accepted Kunpeng's submission despite the danger of provoking Zhenyuanzi. 48 59
Repeated losses hardened his suspicion of the Sages and Heavenly Dao. By the final Witch–Demon conflict, he was willing to cooperate with his race's enemies, sacrifice himself, and devastate the stars rather than remain a pawn in another power's design. 97 103 104
