Background

Ao Guang is the son of Ao Ren, the Dragon King of the East Sea, and initially appears as the East Sea Dragon Clan's Crown Prince while visiting his uncle, Ao Ping, Dragon King of the Great Marsh. Ao Ping teaches him that dragons must be “smooth and adaptable” to survive, a lesson Ao Guang takes to heart. 14 15

His grandparents—the first Dragon King and Dragon Mother of the East Sea—were elite personal guards of Ancestor Dragon who died during the Dragon-Han Tribulation. Ao Ren was subsequently raised by the Turtle Prime Minister, who later continued serving Ao Guang. 194 616

Ao Guang meets Shi Yu during the battle to subdue the Unicorn Rhinoceros. Initially irritated at being made a generation junior, he becomes impressed by Shi Yu's cultivation, treasures, and generosity after receiving a Golden Core. 15 16

He later leads East Sea war dragons to assist Shi Yu against the Kui Ox, but withdraws when Shi Yu subdues the beast without their help. Ao Guang's admiration for Shi Yu grows into a lasting alliance. 18 41

Ao Guang guides the Intercepting Sect through the ruins of East King Duke's Immortal Court, only to be attacked by two golden flood dragons and immediately seek Shi Yu's protection. 64

Ao Guang gives the needle to Sun Wukong rather than lending it, allowing the monkey to claim the Merit treasure as the Ruyi Jingu Bang. The other Sea Dragon Kings subsequently provide Wukong with armor, a crown, and boots. 393 394

Ancestor Dragon and Lingyun Crossing

After Ancestor Dragon's return, Ao Guang helps him seek a Dragon King position that can assist in resolving his karma. He ultimately obtains an imperial decree appointing Ancestor Dragon to Lingyun Crossing. 669 670
