Background / History
Houtu is one of the Twelve Ancestral Magi, born from Pangu’s essence blood. Her native Law of Earth became increasingly refined after Su Ming preached the Dao and helped the Witch Clan form Primordial Spirits. Unlike the more warlike members of her clan, she is identified as gentle and compassionate, with a dislike of conflict. 125
After the sermon, Houtu remained behind in Pangu Hall and revealed that an alien power within her was changing her origin and assimilating both her Primordial Spirit and body. Su Ming’s examination found a hidden Law of Reincarnation in her origin, initially suggesting that reincarnation was her destined path. 125
The truth was more dangerous: the Law of Reincarnation contained a hidden Heavenly Dao runic imprint designed to erase Houtu’s consciousness and turn her into a selfless vessel operating the Six Paths of Reincarnation. Houtu believed removing it would require the destruction of her True Spirit, but Su Ming refused to allow Heavenly Dao to use her as a sacrifice. 126
Su Ming gave her the Six Paths Reincarnation Pagoda, a Chaos Spiritual Treasure. Its purer Origin of Reincarnation erased the Heavenly Dao’s imprint, freed Houtu from assimilation, and bestowed the orthodox inheritance of the Reincarnation Demon God. 127 128
Guided by a summons from the pagoda, Houtu and Su Ming traveled to the Nether Blood Sea. There, the pagoda opened the way through the Eighteen Levels of Hell to Pangu’s true Land of Reincarnation—a realm created from the origins of slain Chaos Demon Gods. Houtu learned that Pangu’s intended path was not for her to perish as reincarnation, but to wield reincarnation as its lord. 133 134 135
After refining the Land of Reincarnation’s origin, Houtu established the Six Paths of Reincarnation and manifested the Earthly Dao. She survived Heavenly Dao’s retaliation, later helped seal Hongjun during the conflict, and worked with Su Ming to create the Netherworld’s governing order. 143 144 151 153
Appearance
Houtu is a beautiful, delicately built woman whose presence shifts from gentle and melancholy to solemn, majestic authority as her command of reincarnation grows. She is later seen wearing simple, elegant palace attire before the Samsara Disc. 125 143 168
- Her gentle eyes become deep and star-like after her cultivation advances, seeming to contain the cycle of life and death. 136
- Her Ancestral Witch body is exceptionally durable; the Origin of Reincarnation further tempers it toward the level of a Chaos Spiritual Treasure. 128
- When exercising the Earthly Dao’s authority, her bearing becomes commanding enough to decree the creation of Fengdu City. 154
Personality
Houtu is compassionate and conflict-averse, deeply troubled by the fate of wandering souls and the disorder of the Primordial World. Her grand vow to establish reincarnation is motivated by pity for souls without a destination after death and for the resentment and malevolent energy that result. 125 143
She initially reacts to Heavenly Dao’s scheme with fear and despair, particularly at the prospect of losing her identity. Once freed, she becomes clear-minded, resolute, and willing to undertake the responsibility of building the Earthly Dao. 126 128 136
Houtu consistently shows gratitude, trust, and concern toward Su Ming. She relies on his guidance but also acts decisively in her own right, establishing Fengdu City, creating Meng Po, and organizing the Underworld’s future administration. 136 153 154 155
Abilities & Skills
Law of Earth
Houtu’s original accompanying law is the Law of Earth, which is seamlessly integrated with her physical body and Primordial Spirit.
- Her Law of Earth is described as profound and expansive. 125
- She retains her Ancestral Witch identity and an Ancestral Witch body even while her true body resides in the Underworld. 155
Great Dao of Reincarnation
After purifying the corrupted seed within her, Houtu gains the complete inheritance and a direct cultivation path of the Reincarnation Demon God.
- Commands the powers of birth, death, endings, beginnings, and rebirth. 125 128
- Can establish and maintain the Six Paths of Reincarnation. 143 153
- Can create six enormous reincarnation vortexes and chains of order that seal vast stretches of space-time. 151
- Her authority permits her to send True Spirits into reincarnation, including the Chaos Mysterious Turtle’s purified True Spirit. 168
Earthly Dao Authority
By establishing reincarnation and Fengdu City, Houtu becomes the Lord of the Earthly Dao.
- The Netherworld becomes a distinct realm in which Heavenly Dao cannot interfere for a time. 153
- A Golden Wheel of Merit protects her after the Six Paths are established, rendering her nearly invincible below Saints. 143
- She can gather Yin energy, ghost energy, and reincarnation laws to create Fengdu City. 154
- Her authority extends to governing life, death, and rebirth through the Underworld’s supreme treasures. 155
Eighteen Levels of Hell
The Six Paths Reincarnation Pagoda grants Houtu dominion over the Eighteen Levels of Hell.
- The pagoda suppresses the soul-torturing force of Tongue-Pulling Hell and allows Houtu to control its space. 133
- All eighteen hellish spaces merge into the pagoda and become the basis of her future authority. 134
- Following Su Ming’s guidance, she creates the Eighteen Levels of Hell within the Netherworld to punish souls burdened by karmic debt. 153
Avatar Creation
Houtu can manifest an independent avatar while maintaining her greater role as the Lord of the Earthly Dao.
- She creates Meng Po to guard the Bridge of Helplessness and administer Meng Po’s Soup to souls entering reincarnation. 153
- She severs a corpse to preserve an Ancestral Witch body of mid-stage Primordial Golden Immortal cultivation while her true body remains in the Underworld. 155
