Background / History

Aiwass is a high-ranking spirit associated with the number 93 and the transmission of knowledge. She normally exists in a higher realm without a physical body, observing beings such as Aleister Crowley and Roy Crowley. Her existence is not limited to one individual manifestation; she can become “plural,” with separate aspects observing Roy and Aleister at the same time 1 4.

Roy first encountered Aiwass as his Holy Guardian Angel. When Aleister's Formula struck Roy, Aiwass possessed him and absorbed the attack, saving his life. Because she lacked a physical medium, however, her ability to affect the Material World remained severely restricted 4 6.

Aiwass became Roy's principal source of occult knowledge. She analyzed rituals, improved Roy's methods, explained the limits of his powers, and helped him complete the Spirit Base Reincarnation ritual after Veleslan's death. Although she could modify and explain rituals, Roy generally had to understand and activate them himself 14 23 78.

Her relationship with Anna Sprengel began with a contract. Anna detached her soul and spirit from her body and entrusted Aiwass with protecting it until her return. Another magician stole the body, leaving Aiwass unable to complete the contract or gain her freedom. Aleister's use of Academy City's AIM Diffusion Field finally gave Aiwass a physical body.
