Background

Satella grew up as an orphan near the capital of Lugnica, unaware of either parent’s identity. As a young half-elf in a kingdom hostile to mixed-bloods, she spent more than a decade in the slums and was effectively barred from stable work or a normal life. 140

She supported herself by walking beyond the capital to gather wild fruit, then regularly gave most of it to hungry slum children. Her beauty nevertheless made her a target for criminals and would-be traffickers; those who approached with malicious intent were devoured by the shadows that protected her. 140

Fearing that this uncontrollable power could one day harm innocent people, Satella remained isolated in the slums despite longing to see the wider world. Roy discovered her there, identified the emotion behind her power as “Envy,” and persuaded her to leave under his protection. 141 142
