Background / History

Athena’s oldest identity was that of a winged-serpent Earth Mother Goddess associated with life, death, the earth, the underworld, and heavenly wisdom. She was once described as the highest of the gods and Queen of all gods before the rise of “Steel” and patriarchal sky gods displaced her from supremacy. This history created her lasting hatred for Steel Heroes, Zeus, and the Last Steel. 38

As a Disobedient God, Athena wandered without true autonomy. Her presence brought war, paranoia, and destruction to human nations; wisdom became suspicion, while states she passed through became obsessed with military power. 68 A previous Campione stole and concealed her Gorgon Stone, stripping her of her tripartite form and sending her into deep slumber. 69

When the Gorgon Stone resurfaced, Athena sought it from Roy Crowley in the Swiss Alps. Though initially weak, she agreed to a contest: if Roy won, she would become his prisoner; if she won, she would reclaim the stone. 34 After restoring her power, she fought Roy with her night, serpent, death, war, and wisdom Authorities, but was defeated by the Light of the Right. 36 38

Rather than kill her for an Authority, Roy proposed an alliance against the Steel Hero and the Last King. Athena accepted, placing the Gorgon Stone within Roy and tying their fates together by contract. 39 She later helped him capture Aphrodite and became one of his most dependable divine allies. 65

After leaving her original world, Athena gathered and consolidated versions of herself from other worlds. In the Greek Otherworld, she converged with Machine God Athena—the living battleship responsible for preserving and reproducing her home planet’s knowledge—and gained both its body and accumulated scientific knowledge. 497 502 She eventually rejected her corrupted Earth Mother Goddess aspects and identified herself solely as Athena. 583

Appearance

Athena’s appearance changes with her divine state. In her weakened form, she is a petite girl; after restoring her Gorgon Stone, she becomes a tall young goddess with a mature divine presence. 34 36

Personality

Athena is proud, incisive, and highly self-assured. Defeat does not make her submissive: even after losing to Roy, she mocks him, warns that she will exploit any opportunity to kill him, and insists on retaining her dignity. 38 Her pride also prevents her from accepting an incomplete existence, motivating her to reclaim the Gorgon Stone despite knowing that it could return her to the fate of a wandering Disobedient God. 69

She values knowledge and wisdom above conventional affection or status. Athena is curious about unfamiliar worlds, beings, and systems, openly studying Othinus as an unprecedented subject rather than reacting with jealousy to her greater power. 496 497 This curiosity makes her unusually adaptable; she rapidly comprehends the laws of foreign worlds and absorbs the knowledge of her alternate selves. 502 514

Despite her pride, Athena is direct and generally honors agreements. She admits that Roy’s unusual nature does not trigger the instinctive hatred normally felt between Disobedient Gods and Campiones, and she supports their alliance so long as it remains directed against Steel and the Last King. 38 39 Her tenderness is largely reserved for Roy; toward ordinary humans, she is arrogant, capricious, and indifferent to their fear or suffering. 584
