Background / History

Tongtian was confined within Zixiao Palace for a long period after the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation, during which the Two Sages of the West had joined Laozi and Primordial Lord of Heaven in suppressing him. His release by Dao Ancestor Hongjun restores the Interception Sect's fortune and immediately alarms the Western Teachings. 92

Following his release, Tongtian seeks redress for the deaths of his disciples and holds the Two Sages of the West responsible for the sect's plight. He also recognizes Su Yang as an unfathomable figure with whom alliance is more valuable than controlling “countless destinies.” 96 161

Tongtian eventually fulfills his vow to sever his Sage position, refusing to remain bound to the Heavenly Dao. Although this reduces him to peak Quasi-Sage cultivation, he re-cultivates through the Sacrificing Dao path and later begins transitioning to the Mythical Primordial World system under Su Yang's guidance. 321 371 596

Appearance

Tongtian is commonly presented as a composed Daoist master surrounded by Upper Pure immortal light, auspicious clouds, and sword qi. In battle, his bearing shifts into that of an aggressive and unrestrained swordsman. 1042 1105

  • Often carries the three-foot Qingping Sword. 1105
  • Rides the Kui Ox when entering battle formations. 1057
  • His arrival may be accompanied by lotus blooms beneath his feet and curling azure light. 1105
  • His anger is frequently marked by rising hair and beard, billowing sleeves, and tangible killing intent. 908 1050

Personality

Tongtian is fiery, resolute, and exceptionally proud. He resists hierarchy when it conflicts with his convictions, particularly when Primordial Lord of Heaven invokes seniority or disparages the Interception Sect. 476 908 1105

He believes all beings deserve access to cultivation regardless of origin, race, aptitude, or birth. This inclusive philosophy defines the Interception Sect and directly conflicts with Primordial Lord of Heaven's preference for disciples of exceptional pedigree and foundation. 114 147

Despite his sharp temper, Tongtian is deeply protective of his disciples and receptive to Su Yang's guidance. He is willing to abandon an established Sage path, endure a fall in cultivation, and undertake a new system of cultivation to pursue a higher Dao. 205 356 596

Abilities & Skills

Way of the Sword

Tongtian specializes in slaughter, conquest, and sword cultivation. His sword qi is described as containing countless transformations and overwhelming opponents before they can properly defend themselves. 1199

  • Wields Upper Pure sword qi capable of tearing space and severing time, karma, and destiny in a single strike. 359
  • Can annihilate a Heavenly Immortal Great Demon with one Qingping Sword strike. 352
  • His casual sword strike can match the force of Great Sun Tathagata's Innate Spiritual Treasure. 363
  • His mastery of sword arts is the foundation of Yunxiao's own formidable sword Dao. 355

Zhu Xian Sword Formation

Tongtian commands the Four Swords of Zhu Xian and their formation diagram, ancient treasures associated with Demon Ancestor Rahu. 146 364

  • The formation cannot be broken without four Sages acting together. 364 659
  • Even without establishing the formation, he can use the Four Swords to contend with Zhunti and Jieyin simultaneously. 371
  • The formation can tear open or collapse portions of Chaos during battle. 179 281
  • He entrusted the Four Swords and formation diagram to Daoist Duobao during the Investiture of the Gods crisis. 1042

Sacrificing Dao

After severing his Sage position, Tongtian re-cultivates through the Sacrificing Dao path rather than relying on borrowed Heavenly Dao authority. 321 371

  • The realm is compared to the Saint Realm of another world. 371
  • It enables him to fight the Two Sages of the West alone without falling behind. 371
  • His strength at this stage allows him to suppress or contend evenly with Beast Emperor Shen Ni, a Three Corpses Sage. 384
  • He eventually masters the realm completely through combat. 385

Heavenly Secrets and Retrospection

Tongtian possesses unusually acute perception and methods for investigating past events.

  • Detects a trace of Dao Ancestor Hongjun's hidden magical power that Primordial Lord of Heaven fails to notice. 114
  • Uses magical power to reveal a region's past, exposing the suffering of mortals beneath Western Spirit Mountain. 362
  • Can sense disruptions to the flow of qi between heaven and earth and infer the escalation of the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation. 1042

Myriad Immortals and Myriad Demons Formation

Su Yang teaches Tongtian this formation to preserve the Interception Sect's lineage in the face of future calamity. 1056

  • Combines immortals and demons, Dao and devil, righteousness and evil into a single formation. 1056
  • Is intended to protect elite disciples and prevent the sect's sacred flame from being extinguished. 1056
  • Its eventual activation leads to a massive battle and Hongjun's intervention. 1061
