Gawain expanded his influence, invaded Wano, and executed Kaido before crossing the World Gate and learning chakra from Kaguya. He returned to his world to spread chakra and recruit Yoriichi Tsugikuni against Muzan Kibutsuji.

Arc 17Building a New Era

Gawain won the Five Elders’ favor and used his authority to strike deals with the Grand Line’s kings, launch the Sea Train project, and expand his influence through allies and public media. As he prepared for a coming clash with Kaido and the Four Emperors, Borsalino brought him the Navy’s proposal for war, and Gawain questioned whether they could build a new future for the seas.

Arc 18Gawain Invades Wano

Gawain gathered allies, visited Mihawk and Whitebeard, and then led the Dark Bird Ship’s forces into Wano to defeat Kaido’s crew and reorganize the country. The battle became a proving ground for his forces, while Who’s-Who confronted Sabo and Luffy and revealed his grudge over Shanks stealing the Gum-Gum Fruit.

  • Gawain challenged Mihawk, who rejected his invitation to join the Dark Bird Ship but gradually became involved with Gawain’s crew and companions.
  • Kaido prepared to ally with Big Mom against Gawain, while Yamato sought a chance to escape Wano and sail with her destined captain.

Arc 19Kaido’s Fall and Return

Gawain’s forces defeated Kaido and the Big Mom Pirates’ alliance in Wano, and Gawain publicly executed Kaido while broadcasting his challenge to the world’s nobles. After returning from death in Xianyang Palace, Kaido discovered he had become a Terracotta Warrior and could train and protect Gawain beyond the Gate.

  • Gawain recruited Yamato as an apprentice, while Robin learned about Pluton and Sukiyaki entrusted Tama and Ame no Habakiri to her before taking his own life.
  • Kaido and Big Mom joined forces against the Dark Bird Ship, but Gawain, Mihawk, and Rayleigh intercepted their attack as battles spread across Wano.
  • Shanks arrived to end the war, but fighting continued among the crews until Gawain defeated Kaido after a prolonged battle and Big Mom’s forces withdrew.
