Early life and career

Sherlock is a member of the Hermes family, the younger brother of Mycroft Hermes and son of Arthur Holmes, Avalon’s former Minister of Royal Affairs. Arthur was framed after a royal prince’s death, a case later recognized as part of a curse rather than ordinary poisoning; the family’s damaged reputation shaped Sherlock’s distrust of political authority. 107 110

After graduating from the Royal Law University, Sherlock refused to join the Bureau of Supervision, Law Court, or Arbitration Hall. Instead, he became a special advisor whose independence from Bureau procedure allowed him to solve major cases; by the opening of the story, he is famous enough that even the White Queen Division’s director treats him with respect. 3 25

He became close to Edward Moriarty while studying law. Edward taught him boxing and became both Sherlock’s trusted partner and a practical safeguard against the dangers Sherlock attracts through his investigations. 53 60

Dream Realm ritual and early investigations

Sherlock joined an advancement ritual in the Dream Realm under the code name Detective, warning the participants that their Paths, abilities, and real identities could be exposed through the ritual. Afterward, Sherlock and Edward investigated the Sweater Brotherhood. Sherlock traced the group to an abandoned chemical factory, suspected its link to the Noble Red Society, and provided the deductions that guided Edward’s law-enforcement abilities. 50 53

His investigation eventually led to York Holmes, Sherlock’s uncle, Lloyd’s legal advisor, vice president of the Avalon Bar Association, and editor-in-chief of the Lloyd Weekly. Faked death and Drost’s exposure

After surviving the bombing, Sherlock had Mycroft spread word of his death so that York and any accomplices would lower their guard. The staged funeral became public, while Sherlock continued his investigation through Iver, Edward, and Mycroft. 107 110

Sherlock later returned publicly and explained that he had faked his death to investigate Minister Drost’s espionage. His evidence exposed Drost’s smuggling operation, assassinations, and attempted murder of his own daughter, Lily. Iris, Hermes, and later research

Sherlock investigated Professor Moriarty’s past and uncovered that Freya Molly Moriarty is James Moriarty’s biological daughter, with Anna Kingsford as her mother. 513

While investigating the old Iris royal family, Sherlock sent Iver a coded letter indicating that he was being monitored and could not safely explain what he had learned. Iver and Isabel concluded that he was in danger. 985

Personality

Sherlock is exceptionally proud of his intelligence and openly contemptuous of incompetence. He can be cold, sarcastic, and brutally direct, particularly toward Bureau personnel whom he considers unable to understand obvious conclusions. His respect is difficult to earn, but he immediately recognizes Iver’s observational ability as extraordinary. 18
