Background / History
Early life and career
Sherlock is a member of the Hermes family, the younger brother of Mycroft Hermes and son of Arthur Holmes, Avalon’s former Minister of Royal Affairs. Arthur was framed after a royal prince’s death, a case later recognized as part of a curse rather than ordinary poisoning; the family’s damaged reputation shaped Sherlock’s distrust of political authority. 107 110
After graduating from the Royal Law University, Sherlock refused to join the Bureau of Supervision, Law Court, or Arbitration Hall. Instead, he became a special advisor whose independence from Bureau procedure allowed him to solve major cases; by the opening of the story, he is famous enough that even the White Queen Division’s director treats him with respect. 3 25
He became close to Edward Moriarty while studying law. Edward taught him boxing and became both Sherlock’s trusted partner and a practical safeguard against the dangers Sherlock attracts through his investigations. 53 60
Dream Realm ritual and early investigations
Sherlock joined an advancement ritual in the Dream Realm under the code name Detective, warning the participants that their Paths, abilities, and real identities could be exposed through the ritual. During the ritual’s historical murder mystery, he identified Lu Lu as Princess Isabel and worked alongside Iver to survive the escalating eliminations. 34 40
Afterward, Sherlock and Edward investigated the Sweater Brotherhood. Sherlock traced the group to an abandoned chemical factory, suspected its link to the Noble Red Society, and provided the deductions that guided Edward’s law-enforcement abilities. 50 53
His investigation eventually led to York Holmes, Sherlock’s uncle, Lloyd’s legal advisor, vice president of the Avalon Bar Association, and editor-in-chief of the Lloyd Weekly. Sherlock suspected York of ties to Lloyd’s, the Noble Red Society, the royal curse, his father’s framing, and the bombing that nearly killed him. 107 163
Faked death and Drost’s exposure
After surviving the bombing, Sherlock had Mycroft spread word of his death so that York and any accomplices would lower their guard. The staged funeral became public, while Sherlock continued his investigation through Iver, Edward, and Mycroft. 107 110
Sherlock later returned publicly and explained that he had faked his death to investigate Minister Drost’s espionage. His evidence exposed Drost’s smuggling operation, assassinations, and attempted murder of his own daughter, Lily. The revelation reinforced Sherlock’s public reputation as a symbol that individual talent can challenge Avalon’s institutions. 246
Altered body and the Advisor incident
Following Iver’s ritual work against the Moron Curse, Sherlock’s body regressed to that of a thirteen- or fourteen-year-old. Though initially determined to conceal the change, he eventually returned to Hermes Manor, where his parents insisted on caring for him in his physically childlike state. 266 449
While using the name Arthur Conan Doyle in Eagle Cape Village, Sherlock acquired a custom cane from the Magnetic Hammer Master and traveled with Hai Na after Queen Sophia’s death. 411
Later, an entity identified as the Advisor from Stibium impersonated Sherlock. Iver detected the imposture through Sherlock’s unusually formal way of addressing him and confirmed it with carefully chosen tests; Sherlock subsequently woke, worried that he had been unable to help Isabel. 479 481
Iris, Hermes, and later research
Sherlock investigated Professor Moriarty’s past and uncovered that Freya Molly Moriarty is James Moriarty’s biological daughter, with Anna Kingsford as her mother. 513
While investigating the old Iris royal family, Sherlock sent Iver a coded letter indicating that he was being monitored and could not safely explain what he had learned. Iver and Isabel concluded that he was in danger. 985
Iver and Arsene later found Sherlock under house arrest rather than in a conventional prison. Sherlock had been working in dreams while eating in the Material Realm, and remained composed enough to greet his rescuers with banter. 1016
Sherlock subsequently learned that Hermes, ancestor of the Hermes family, had once been an Apostle named Mercury and had followed the Path of Wisdom. He now researches Truth through calculations involving Avalon’s infrastructure, astronomy, reservoirs, and railways. 1025 1094
Appearance
Sherlock’s adult form is that of a slender young man with black hair, brown eyes, a long hooked nose, and thin lips that tend to remain pursed. His severe features and habitual cool expression make him appear harsher than his age. 18
Following Iver’s ritual, his body became that of an early teenager despite retaining an adult mind and personality. 40 266
- Black hair and brown eyes. 18
- Slender build in his adult form. 18
- Long hooked nose and thin, habitually pursed lips. 18
- Temporarily regressed to a thirteen- or fourteen-year-old body. 266
- Uses the alias Arthur Conan Doyle while in his younger form. 411
Personality
Sherlock is exceptionally proud of his intelligence and openly contemptuous of incompetence. He can be cold, sarcastic, and brutally direct, particularly toward Bureau personnel whom he considers unable to understand obvious conclusions. His respect is difficult to earn, but he immediately recognizes Iver’s observational ability as extraordinary. 18
He values truth, independent thought, and personal ability over rank. Although born into a politically connected family, Sherlock has little interest in authority for its own sake and originally rejected a path toward becoming Grand Arbitrator so that he could pursue knowledge. 431
His dedication to Wisdom has an unhealthy side. Sherlock can neglect sleep and food when absorbed in work, suffers from poor alcohol tolerance, and becomes anxious over the competitive need to be the first person to prove a Truth. 162 259 1094
Despite his sharp tongue, he is loyal to those he considers friends. He respected Edward’s request not to pursue the Moriarty family further, trusted Iver with the York investigation, and consistently showed concern for Isabel’s safety and position. 40 85 107
Abilities & Skills
Deduction and investigative analysis
Sherlock’s primary strength is his ability to turn small physical, social, and behavioral details into coherent conclusions.
- Identified a bartender as suspicious from his recognition of Iver, expensive Elven-style boots, cultivated speech, and lack of fear toward the Bureau of Supervision. 18
- Uses documents, witness behavior, motives, alibis, and organizational connections to reconstruct conspiracies. 84 178
- Correctly linked Drost’s secretary’s murder to the smuggling case and identified Hawkeye’s distinctive weaponry. 84
- Maintains a broad intelligence network; his principal investigative method is consulting trusted contacts and their own connections. 107
- His reasoning can still fail when crucial information is unavailable, as shown by his incorrect conclusion that the Noble Red Society directly killed Iver’s parents. 107
Path of Wisdom
Sherlock’s Wisdom Path amplifies his analysis, academic research, and pursuit of Truth.
- Reached the Third Level of the Path of Wisdom. 412
- Calculates astronomical trajectories and Avalon infrastructure data to accumulate Wisdom experience. 1094
- Researches the history of Hermes and the Fool’s Eulogy Grimoire. 1025 1094
- Suffers from anxiety driven by the Path’s competitive need to establish Truth before others do. 1094
Path of Authority and law magic
As a Law Mage, Sherlock can use Authority-based spells, but his refusal to enter Avalon's legal hierarchy restricts his access to them.
- Authority spells generally require an Avalon law-enforcement short sword, which functions as both a weapon and a symbol of legal authority. 59
- Cannot freely use many law spells because he is a consultant rather than an official subordinate within the legal system. 59
- Can temporarily access Authority power by borrowing Edward’s gloves, ritual sword, pistol, and official documents. 266
- His Authority Path’s self-imposed advancement barrier weakened after he reconciled with his past. 447
Ritual and curse knowledge
Sherlock is knowledgeable about advancement rituals, Dream Realm risks, and curse analysis.
- Prepared materials for advancement rituals with characteristic focus and precision. 32
- Warned ritual participants that Dream Realm activities can reveal Paths and unique abilities despite disguising faces and voices. 34
- Partially dispelled Lu Lu’s Filthy Blood Curse by using pure water and a rune, then recognized that the curse was a more complex compound affliction requiring Iver’s specialized treatment. 44
