Background

Mei inherited the Narukami Shrine after her father, Raiden Ryoma, disappeared. She became its shrine maiden and continued the sword training he had begun, eventually reaching Menkyo Kaiden and developing her own Hokushin Itto-ryu path. Ryoma had told her that she would earn the right to wield Narukami only after reaching the end of her swordsmanship and understanding what she should draw her sword for. 1 6

Before his disappearance, Mei and Ryoma had a distant relationship. She resented his severity and emotional reserve, yet still believed that he cared for her in his own way. His refusal to meet her after secretly returning to the shrine left her devastated. 3

Mei met Kiana roughly three months before the Narukami theft. Initially reluctant to teach her, she yielded to Kiana's persistence and came to value her purity and companionship; Kiana became her only friend. 1

Appearance

Mei is a purple-haired young woman who initially wears the red-and-white attire of a Narukami Shrine maiden. 1 17

  • Purple hair and purple eyes. 1 25
  • Wears a red-and-white miko outfit while serving at the shrine. 1 17
  • Later adopts the name and presence of Yomi, becoming nearly indistinguishable from the Yomi Kiana had known through the story's prior records. 129
  • Develops scarlet oni horns during a corruption episode. 62

Personality

Mei is gentle, patient, and self-critical. Her inability to initially teach Kiana effectively caused her to doubt herself rather than blame her student, while Kiana's eventual success brought her genuine pride rather than jealousy. 1

Her care for others is paired with caution and responsibility. She tends Kiana's injuries, secretly follows her when she fears for her safety, organizes frightened civilians during the Thunder Calamity, and urges restraint when powerful weapons or political alliances are involved. 6 9 18 35

Although she initially seeks an ordinary life and hesitates to be bound by organizations, Mei consistently accepts responsibility when lives are at stake. She volunteers to wield the dangerous blade against Takemikazuchi, later joins the Blade Masters for their intelligence network, and continues seeking a new path after concluding that her previous one had reached a dead end. 32 59 119

Abilities & Skills

Hokushin Itto-ryu and One Sword Style

Mei is a master swordswoman whose One Sword Style centers on a single, decisive strike executed with unified body, breath, and intent. 1

  • Reached Menkyo Kaiden before the main conflict. 1
  • Can perform an iai draw so fast that it leaves almost no afterimage. 1
  • Fights with fluid footwork and precise, seamless cuts even while under pressure from Oni Gods. 8
  • Identifies enemy cores as a key weakness after fighting the Octopus Demon. 9

Lightning Power

The Thunder Soul Imprint grants Mei an affinity for Honkai Energy and lightning-enhanced swordsmanship. 13

  • Produces lightning arcs around her blade while entering a one-strike stance. 13
  • Can cross more than ten meters in a lightning-like slash, leaving a massive cut across the training ground. 13
  • Gains a 28.2% initial increase to lightning-attribute attacks through Heart of Thunder; the effect can rise to 60%. 13
  • Her lightning attacks allow her to destroy transformed humanoid monsters that ordinary cuts cannot finish. 17

Resonating Blade

The Resonating Blade is the Imperial Blade forged from Takemikazuchi after Mei killed the dragon and absorbed its power. 32 33

  • Word of Power — releases the blade's true form and recreates Takemikazuchi's strength. 33
  • Grievous Injury — has a chance to inflict Grievous Injury on enemies. 33
  • Narukami — triples lightning-based damage. 33
  • Its power is accompanied by Honkai erosion with every use. 33
  • Mei can prevent black residual energy from attaching itself to the weapon by blocking it with Honkai Energy. 33

Oniification and Void Power

Mei's later path is tied to both oniification and the Void. 62 169

  • Scarlet oni horns manifest while she is corrupted during the Izumo crisis. 62
  • Her strength grows to the point that Sirin considers anyone encountering a missing Mei more at risk than Mei herself. 80
  • She is publicly identified as the Void's most unusual Emissary while using the name Yomi. 169
  • She can switch into a form connected to her Herrscher core, but cannot access the Void Path's power in that state. 185

Leadership and Strategy

Mei is an effective organizer and decision-maker outside direct combat. 18 35

  • Led civilians toward shelter during the Thunder Calamity. 18
  • Advocated against selling infinitely replenishing weapons, fearing their misuse. 35
  • Proposed lending healing items only to those committed to fighting Oni Gods while keeping ownership with Kiana. 35
  • Uses Blade Master intelligence and contacts to locate Oni God activity efficiently. 25 59

Relationships

  • Kiana — Her first close friend in Izumo and the person she considers more important than Narukami. Their bond develops through mutual protection, repeated confessions of devotion, separation, and reunion; by their later time together, they openly affirm their love. 5 41 128 186
  • Raiden Ryoma — Her missing father and former sword instructor. Their relationship is strained by his secrecy and disappearance, though Mei learns that he hid his oniification to spare her from seeing him transformed. 3 6
  • Sirin — Ally in the fight against Takemikazuchi and later a fellow survivor connected to the Ark. Sirin gradually accepts Mei's ability to wield the Resonating Blade, though their relationship later becomes strained. 32 119 128

Story Role / Major Arcs

Narukami Shrine and the Theft

Mei teaches Kiana swordsmanship at the Narukami Shrine and spends a day off with her in Izumo. When Narukami is stolen, Mei discovers Ryoma's letter and is forced to confront both his absence and the shrine's hidden connection to the fight against the Kishin. 1 2 3

After Kiana explains that Ryoma had hidden his oniification and the danger surrounding Takemikazuchi, Mei accepts that she can no longer remain uninvolved. 6

Honkai Awakening and Takemikazuchi

Mei fights beside Kiana against the first emerging Oni Gods, first with conventional swordsmanship and then with the lightning power granted by the Thunder Soul Imprint. 8 13

When Takemikazuchi becomes threatened by Honkai corruption, Mei volunteers to bear the risk of wielding the blade. She resonates with the dragon, kills it in one strike, and becomes the Resonating Blade's master. 31 32 33

Blade Master Operations

Mei becomes a prominent defender of Changkong City, where civilians recognize her as the Narukami Shrine Maiden who slew monsters with lightning. 17 37

She cooperates with the Blade Masters without surrendering her independence, using their information network to hunt Oni Gods and accepting assignments such as the operation against the Whale Monster. 44 51 59

Izumo's Fall and Separation

As Izumo's situation worsens, Mei develops visible oniification symptoms and escapes alongside Kiana, Sirin, and others from an enemy that cannot be permanently killed. 62

Kiana ultimately deceives Mei about leaving together, believing that revealing the full truth would make Mei refuse to abandon Izumo. The deception becomes a lasting source of guilt for Kiana and a central fracture in Mei's later relationships. 65 126

Yomi and the Search for a New Path

After leaving Izumo, Mei spends a year seeking a new method after deciding that her previous path had reached a dead end. She becomes known as Yomi and follows the Void's path. 119 129

Kiana eventually finds her again, apologizes for the past, and reunites with her. By this period, Mei is identified as the Void's most unusual Emissary and continues to act alongside Kiana during later Honkai-related crises. 128 169 186
