Background / History
Chen Tao initially understands himself as a transmigrator who has awakened in Bruce Wayne’s body during the Knightfall era. He has Batman’s wealth, body, and enemies, but none of Bruce’s memories; Bane knows Batman’s identity, leaving escape from Gotham effectively impossible 1.
To survive, Chen Tao relies on acting ability, comic knowledge, and experience as a psychologist. His first plan is to manipulate weaker Gotham villains into an auxiliary force against Bane, beginning with the Ventriloquist and Scarface 1 4.
A later account recasts this origin. Chen Tao claims that he was deliberately created as an alter ego by a Dark Multiverse Bruce Wayne, who erased his own primary identity from the Over-Time Stream and implanted psychological suggestions to ensure Chen Tao would remain Batman while gradually retiring Tim Drake 935.
Appearance
Batman ordinarily presents himself through Bruce Wayne’s civilian identity or a Batman suit and cowl. His appearance becomes increasingly unstable as synchronization expands his available forms.
- Can become a giant green dinosaur 30 190.
- Can dissolve into black nanobots or black sand and re-form elsewhere 60 242 389.
- Can manifest dinosaur claws, vehicle tires, armor plating, and mechanical structures from his body 96.
- Uses the blue-caped Speeding Bullet Bat form for Kryptonian abilities and flight 190 500.
- Later appears in a dragon form as Batman Dragon 565.
Personality
Chen Tao begins deeply reluctant to live as Batman. He repeatedly considers retirement and initially prefers using money, mercenaries, villains, and manipulation over confronting enemies personally 4. His lack of inherited memories makes him guarded around veteran allies such as Jim Gordon and Alfred, while his former career as an actor helps him maintain Bruce Wayne’s identity 1.
He is meticulous, adaptive, and intensely contingency-minded. He prepares layered responses for hostages, supervillains, nuclear threats, Justice League defections, and even his own loss of control 85 438. He can show care for teammates—apologizing to Tim for isolating him and providing protection against herbicide—but often treats information, trust, and people as resources to be managed 32 66.
His methods grow progressively harsher. Batman has forcibly controlled villains, used civilians as pawns, and endangered the Baker family in an attempt to influence Maxine Baker’s destiny 74 164. Despite this, he refuses Emperor Joker’s forced choice between William Hand and all life on Earth-One, resolving instead to save everyone 717.
Abilities & Skills
Alfred Protocol and Batman Synchronization
Batman can synchronize with alternate versions of Batman through the Alfred Protocol, loading their traits, powers, and forms into his own body.
- Requires anchor items and Crisis Energy to acquire new Batman files 1 127.
- Synchronization places immense physical strain on his body 438.
- His transformations are categorized as Sync and Load 438.
- Can supplement his output through a Speed Force-linked device connected to captive speedsters, disregarding the danger to them 438.
Nanobot Morphology
Shattered Bat synchronization lets Batman restructure his body through black nanobots.
- Converts limbs into weapons, claws, tires, and vehicle components 96.
- Dissolves into black sand or swarms of bat-like nanobots for movement and infiltration 242 389.
- Supports layered hybrid forms incorporating dinosaur, vehicle, Venom, and protective components 60 96.
Kryptonian Transformations
Through the Speeding Bullet Bat form, Batman can access Kryptonian physiology.
- Flies and emits heat vision 196 500.
- Produces a biological field recognizable to Krypto as Kal-El’s 190.
- Uses the form alongside Red Death synchronization in combat, but prolonged use drains him 326.
The Red and Life Manipulation
Batman possesses and exploits the power of The Red.
- Is recognized by The Red as one of its own due to this power 181.
- Can communicate with living beings over enormous distances when amplified by the Propulsion Towers 566.
- Uses living beings as power sources for synchronization and universe-scale operations 566.
- Plans to use The Red to control life itself when attempting to save Earth-One and William simultaneously 717.
Dark Multiverse Dragon Authority
As Batman Dragon, he gains powers tied to Barbatos and the Dark Multiverse.
- Holds partial authority over fate and can introduce variables into outcomes shaped by others 597.
- Uses Black Light to counter Emotional Spectrum restraints 696.
- Absorbs Barbatos’s power to stop him escaping, making their powers and identities increasingly entangled 721.
- Risks corruption and loss of self when relying too heavily on Barbatos’s power 571.
Strategy, Psychological Manipulation, and Control
Batman’s most consistent strength is preparation rather than raw force.
- Uses psychological expertise to recruit or direct vulnerable villains 1 74.
- Commands Arkham inmates with Mad Hatter’s control chip during the battle against the Court of Owls 74.
- Uses Clayface doubles, skeletal robots, Talons, and gang networks to make hostage-taking nearly impossible in Gotham 85.
- Maintains a Member Containment Plan for himself and every Justice League member should any of them become a threat 438.

- Talia al Ghul — Formerly connected to Bruce Wayne and mother of Damian. Batman reveals his altered identity to her, works with her against the Outsider, and sends Damian to the Teen Titans for training 340 352.
- Damian Wayne — Son whom Batman protects by keeping him away from Leviathan’s conflict and placing him with the Teen Titans to learn teamwork and leadership 352.
- William Hand — Batman’s new Robin. Batman removes him from his family, equips him as Robin, and assigns Bane and Atrocitus to train him in The Red and The Black; their relationship later shifts toward a difficult partnership of near-equals 389 727.
- Barbatos — Temporary ally, source of Dark Multiverse power, and persistent threat. Batman Dragon saves him from a siege, later absorbs his power, and continues negotiating with him when their goals overlap 696 721 762.
- The Joker — Longstanding adversary whom Batman provokes and manipulates rather than indulging on Joker’s terms; their conflict repeatedly becomes a battle over recognition, control, and identity 49 53.
