The Jade Emperor is the legendary ruler of the Heavenly Court. Records describe Zhang Bairen as having cultivated since childhood through 1,750 kalpas before attaining enlightenment and becoming the god above all gods. 280

His authority is based on a vast collective of reincarnated selves rather than a single uninterrupted identity. Each generation sends infant personalities into the mortal world for reincarnation and training; mature incarnations return to the Main Body as sub-personalities. The strongest personality rules the rest as the Jade Emperor’s main personality. 421 426

The Jade Emperor later reveals that the version known to most of the Three Realms is already the 723rd generation. Hundreds of millions of personalities exist within him, while his main personalities have changed more than seven hundred times through internal competition. 421

Personality

Publicly, the Jade Emperor presents himself as a gentle, humorous, and magnanimous sovereign. He receives allies politely, makes jokes in court, and maintains the image of a wise ruler. 403 415

Behind this demeanor, he is intensely ambitious, cautious, and ruthless. He suspects hidden dangers in the Boer Civilization, plots to restrain the Human Emperor, pressures allies into a deadly campaign for a Sage seat, and is prepared to ambush a weakened Sage personally. 392 393 415

His ambition is also driven by fear of replacement. Although he appears eternal, every main personality risks being overthrown by the countless other Jade Emperor personalities within the collective. 421

As ruler of the Heavenly Court, the Jade Emperor commands gods such as Yang Jian, Nezha, and the Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King. He sends reincarnated selves to explore Bikini Bottom and seeks to establish Heavenly Court control before rival powers can enter. 365

He views the Human Emperor’s potential access to immortality as a direct threat. To prevent Li Shimin from endlessly exploiting time restarts, he plans to stop him from obtaining an Elixir of Eternal Life and considers removing him through the Crown Prince. 392

Boer Civilization Expedition

Suspecting that the Boer Civilization conceals ancient horrors capable of killing even him, the Jade Emperor secretly follows Great Tang’s expedition toward its ruins. 393

When Zhu Zhengwei requests assistance escaping a Sage Universe, the Jade Emperor joins the rescue in exchange for a share of the promised Heavenly Dao Treasures. 403 404 410

Pursuit of a Sage Seat

The Jade Emperor turns the rescue operation into a plan to ambush a sleeping Sage. He coerces other Half-Sages into joining, promises them future Sage opportunities, and leads the assault himself. 415

He and Li Shimin trap God Bor through a combined space-and-time prison, allowing the group to infiltrate the Sage’s Dao Palace. 419

Inside, he attempts to reincarnate into and possess the Sage’s body. His collective personalities enable him to seize four-tenths of her authority before she awakens. 419 420

Bor Universe Sage

Miss Zhang eventually offers him a Sage seat and body, but the apparent reward is a trap: she intends for him to become the Bor Universe’s defender against the approaching Hongjun. 423 424

After accepting the seat, he remains in the Bor Universe to familiarize himself with Sage authority and secretly target other Sage Dao Palaces. He sends his Jade Emperor authority back to the Primordial Universe so a successor can be chosen. 425

Succession of Zhang Zhi

Following the previous main personality’s departure, Zhang Zhi wins the internal contest, takes the name Zhang Bairen, and ascends the Heavenly Court throne without its officials noticing the change. 426 428
