Background and history

Tsunade is the granddaughter of First Hokage Senju Hashirama and a disciple of Third Hokage Sarutobi Hiruzen. Born in Konoha year 17, she trained alongside Hiruzen’s other disciples, Orochimaru and Jiraiya 8 22. She represented the weakened Senju branch at a Ninja Clan Council, where Hiruzen hoped her lineage would carry weight with clans historically allied to the Senju 23.

During the Land of Rain campaign, Tsunade commanded an elite squad on the front lines. Her medical work saved wounded and poisoned ninja, while her individual combat strength was considered formidable 101 123. After the village’s political struggle curtailed the Hokage faction’s authority, Hiruzen entrusted her with the Medical Department 123.

Tsunade later called scattered Senju collateral branches back to their ancestral clan and oversaw its reconstruction. The decision increased the Senju Clan’s political standing but strained her relationship with Hiruzen, who had not been told of her plans in advance 171 172 215. Although nominated as a Fourth Hokage candidate, she concentrated on training Senju ninja and building the clan’s strength rather than rejoining her teacher’s faction 244.

Under Uchiha Tokimitsu’s government, Tsunade continued to oversee Konoha’s medical system and argued in the Senate for intervention after the Sand Village Incident 265 266. She later rejected a daimyo envoy’s request to oppose Tokimitsu, judging that the Senju could not afford another fight on the daimyo’s behalf 451. When Konoha Hospital became the Ninja World Government Medical and Health General Bureau, she was chosen to oversee the medical field 472.

Personality

Tsunade holds firmly to her political convictions. She regarded Tokimitsu’s planned war against Mount Myōboku as a dangerous personal vendetta, yet withheld public opposition out of concern for the Senju Clan 442. Her refusal to aid the daimyo shows a more pragmatic side: she weighed his request against the Shogunate’s military strength and the losses the Senju had already suffered 451.
