Background / History

Reputation and meeting Uchiha Tokimitsu

Before partnering with Uchiha Tokimitsu, Sakumo was already one of Konoha's most renowned senior Jonin. His reputation rested on difficult missions, keeping his promises, and refusing to abandon teammates. Elder Uchiha Setsuna praised him as a genuine inheritor of the Will of Fire, and Uchiha ninja who had served alongside him consistently spoke highly of him 45 46 69.

Their first contact involved Sakumo investigating a confrontation between Uchiha ninja and Anbu. He recognized Tokimitsu's formidable swordsmanship while expressing concern about the younger ninja's estrangement from the village. Despite differences in outlook and age, their subsequent journey together developed into a friendship 45 47.

Land of Waterfalls mission

Sakumo received orders to investigate secret contact between Iwagakure and Kumogakure in the Land of Waterfalls. He brought eight infiltration specialists and secured Tokimitsu's support: thirty Jonin and sixty Chunin. His preparations included a telepathic pair of brothers, a contracted Ninja Dog, and a Shadow Clone left at camp 47.

During the attack on the meeting, Sakumo entered the enemy formation ahead of the others and swiftly beheaded two opponents before five Kumogakure Anbu intercepted him. The operation ended with the deaths of the Tsuchikage's Assistant, the Raikage's Secretary, and the Two-Tails Jinchuriki. Sakumo judged those results more significant than the original intelligence objective 48 50.

Mobile Unit and the Uzumaki rescue

Sakumo's long-standing ambition to create a higher-order ninja combat force took shape with the Mobile Unit. Its initial combat contingent comprised twenty-one Jonin, including twelve Uchiha veterans supplied by Tokimitsu. Sakumo tested its members through sparring, easily defeating four challengers before agreeing to end his match with Tokimitsu as a draw 57.

In the Land of Whirlpools, the Mobile Unit and its Uzumaki allies were surrounded by the Three Nations Allied Forces. While Tokimitsu sustained the frontline offensive, Sakumo infiltrated the Mist command position and beheaded Genji. The commander's death shattered Kirigakure's morale and enabled the allied force to pursue the retreating Mist ninja 62.

The assassination came at a cost: Sakumo deliberately took a blast from Genji's snake staff, leaving his left shoulder progressively petrifying. Medical treatment and his own Chakra could not stop its spread; the Uzumaki Clan Head temporarily suppressed it with a seal, and Tsunade later promised to treat the injury 63 65.

The heavy losses among support ninja prompted Sakumo to propose guard squads and full-time staff officers. He also sought to unite civilian ninja and ninja clans within a broader vision for Konoha, winning Tokimitsu's political support 74.

Land of Rain and the “New Konoha” campaign

Sakumo openly supported Tokimitsu during their confrontation with Danzō over the Land of Rain campaign. Nevertheless, he urged withdrawal from the expeditionary camp rather than allow the dispute to become internal bloodshed 90 91 92.

He later fought Hanzō alongside Tokimitsu, using a Shadow Clone and an underground surprise attack that narrowly failed. Although Sakumo had initially considered killing Hanzō, he ultimately sheathed his sword and allowed the confrontation to end. Hanzō's reminder that they lacked an antidote for Salamander Poison further discouraged pursuit 99.

Against Sunagakure, Tokimitsu's battlefield maneuvers created the opportunity for Sakumo to assassinate Chiyo. This victory strengthened Sakumo's prestige and his campaign for Jonin Squad Leader. His proposed “New Konoha” sought better treatment and development opportunities for civilian ninja and lesser clans, but attracted harassment and opposition from the Hokage faction 100 104 105 106 107.

Departmental reform and betrayal

By Chapter 115, Sakumo had become Jonin Squad Leader. Following a public dispute between the Military Police Force and Anbu, he submitted a proposal defining departmental authority. One-fifth of Konoha's Jonin signed it without counting Uchiha supporters, alarming Hiruzen and his advisors because it threatened their use of overlapping jurisdictions to expand personal power 115.

Sakumo subsequently accepted a reconnaissance mission to the Land of Whirlpools. Taking Tokimitsu's unease seriously, he arranged for part of their strength to remain concealed. The force encountered an ambush by Karatachi Yagura, the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, and a thousand Mist ninja; Sakumo killed Munashi Jinpachi through stealth and surprise 116 117 118.

After a negotiated withdrawal from Yagura, Danzō ambushed Sakumo and Tokimitsu on their return. Evidence of the village leadership's involvement deeply shook Sakumo, who concluded that appeasement was no longer possible. The allies had prepared a countertrap, and Sakumo abandoned his previous restraint when the fighting began 119 120.

Eastern war and military authority

Rejecting concessions to Kirigakure over the Land of Whirlpools, Sakumo secured command of Konoha's Eastern Region and Border Defense Force. His army numbered approximately two thousand ninja, with Tokimitsu serving as Deputy Commander and Nara Muramasa as Combat Strategist 130 133.

Their coordinated campaign defeated the Mist forces, but Yagura's Tailed Beast power exposed the limits of Sakumo's assassination-oriented fighting style. He requested reinforcements after Yagura became a Perfect Jinchuriki. Later, Sakumo and Orochimaru declined further pursuit of the withdrawing Mist army because their troops were exhausted and the transformed Jinchuriki remained a major threat 139 140 142 144 148.

After the withdrawal, Sakumo retained the army for regional defensive arrangements rather than following the usual rotation or disbandment practice. He also tasked Tokimitsu with rebuilding the nearly destroyed Eastern Border Defense Force 150.

Shogunate campaigns and civilian government

Sakumo helped advance Tokimitsu's plan for international mediation through military pressure on Kumogakure. Although initially concerned about its risks, he persuaded Hiruzen to accept it. In the ensuing campaign, he commanded the First Combat Echelon, selected for its ability to breach enemy defenses 221 224 226.

His duel with A initially revealed the Cloud ninja's superior raw strength. Sakumo ultimately used a Shadow Clone to misdirect A's decisive attack, then injured him with swordsmanship as Kumogakure's army collapsed 227 228.

During Konoha's escalating internal crisis, Sakumo suspended Jonin Squad operations to stop impeachment demands from spiraling out of control and sought a settlement with Tokimitsu. Preventing civil war remained his overriding concern 245 247.

After the coup and the Third Hokage's death, Sakumo represented civilian ninja and lesser clans in the new political settlement and received leadership of the House of Representatives. Its independence was limited: the Uchiha Clan and its affiliates possessed enough influence to determine its resolutions 253 287 291.

His governing responsibilities also changed his judgment. When his former right-hand man Mimura Hamaki challenged Uchiha military authority, Sakumo no longer intended to sacrifice his own position to seek mercy for him. He increasingly weighed political consequences and accepted that opposition without sufficient strength could be fatal 288 291.

Later operations and the New Era

Sakumo continued to cooperate with Tokimitsu in administration and combat. He confronted Jiraiya as the latter prepared Sage Mode, then later joined operations against Asura and Mount Myōboku. Following the joint surprise attack that beheaded Sage Shima, he favored eliminating the remaining threat because retaliation could endanger his family and clansmen 330 355 398 401.

After the Shogunate's victory over Iwagakure and Kumogakure, Sakumo visited the Land of Waterfalls. Reassured by Tokimitsu about Konoha's future, he convened the ninja clan leaders to discuss a joint memorial urging Tokimitsu to ascend to the Exalted Position 465 467.

In the later overseas campaign, Issho's application to the Republic Alliance's service troops attracted Sakumo's attention. By Chapter 558, Sakumo was Fifth Legion Generalissimo and employed concentrated bombardment against Monkey D. Garp, regretting that the volley had failed to seriously harm him 550 558.

Appearance

Sakumo has silver hair, thick eyebrows, and a seemingly kind face. His clothing varies between practical ninja travel gear and heavier equipment for dangerous engagements 99 160 288 396.

  • Travel attire: Jonin uniform with gaiters 160.
  • Armored configuration: Agile light armor, twin blades at his waist, and a Nodachi on his back, giving him the appearance of an armored samurai 396.

Personality

Sakumo is approachable, modest, and attentive to fellow ninja regardless of rank. He personally handles registration for his subordinates, jokes with Chunin guards, and readily explains the foundations of his techniques. His conviction that specialization can produce strength leads him to reject additional secret arts from the Scroll of Seals in favor of perfecting his swordsmanship 46 50 75.

His compassion does not make him passive in combat. His military style is aggressive and decisive, and he becomes uncomfortable with prolonged defensive fighting. He nevertheless considers troop exhaustion and casualties when making operational decisions, and distrusts Orochimaru's willingness to treat allied lives as expendable numbers 139 147 148.

Early in his political career, Sakumo's selflessness can undermine his own position: after rescuing the Uzumaki, he apologizes for Konoha's failure to send adequate aid. Betrayal and responsibility gradually make him more pragmatic. He learns to use deception, accepts harsher political tradeoffs, and recognizes the limits of challenging Tokimitsu's overwhelming power 63 119 194 288 360.

Abilities & Skills

Secret Sword Style

Sakumo's swordsmanship emphasizes concise movements, precise force, and exceptional speed rather than elaborate exchanges. Tokimitsu considers direct competition in blade technique futile during their early spar 50 57.

  • Instant Slash: Releases Lightning Style blade flashes capable of cutting apart a Chakra fire dragon and continuing toward the opponent 57.
  • Swift Cut: Eight Stage Strike: Shreds an enclosing wire net with repeated agile cuts 57.
  • White Fang Sword Art: Prairie Slash: Channels Chakra through the White Fang Short Sword to clash with A's Lightning Style thrust 227.
  • Iaido stance: Uses a low drawing stance to suggest a decisive sword attack; against A, this becomes part of a clone-based deception 228.

Lightning-enhanced movement

His speed combines Lightning Style stimulation and enhancement, the Body Flicker Technique, and the samurai footwork methods of broken-step and sliding-step 75.

  • Lightning Body Flicker: Forms a Lightning Style Chakra cloak and rapidly repositions; he uses it to escape Aburame Ryoma's insect cloud and circle behind him 120.
  • Rapid intervention: Crosses the battlefield to eliminate enemies and assist allied Jonin before they can follow up their own attacks 59.
  • Fine Chakra control: Shapes white lightning along his blade from scattered arcs into a smooth stream, impressing Jiraiya 355.

Stealth, clones, and assassination

Sakumo is an assassin-type ninja whose greatest threat comes from concealed positioning rather than head-on ninjutsu exchanges 149.

  • Uses a clone as a frontal distraction before striking Bakuton Gari through the heart from behind 81.
  • Combines a Shadow Clone with an underground attack against Hanzō 99.
  • Uses stealth and surprise to kill enemy commanders and elite opponents, including Genji, Chiyo, and Munashi Jinpachi 62 104 118.
  • Secret Art: One Thousand Years of Death: A favored surprise technique that narrowly misses Hanzō; he forgoes it while wielding a longer Nodachi against Asura 99 398 558.

Summoning and communications

Sakumo has contracted Ninja Dogs and incorporates them into mission planning 47.

  • Bashya: A black, bulldog-shaped Ninja Dog assigned to relay information to him 47.
  • Uses the hereditary telepathic technique of twin subordinates for long-distance coordination; this is their ability, not his own 47.

Command and political organization

Sakumo combines breakthrough tactics with institutional reform and coalition-building 74 115 224.

  • Reorganizes the Mobile Unit to protect support ninja and maintain command while its leaders fight on the frontline 74.
  • Coordinates assault forces with Tokimitsu's probing and diversionary attacks 139 140.
  • Builds support among civilian ninja and lesser clans, and gathers substantial Jonin backing for departmental reform 92 115.
  • Adopts concentrated-fire attacks against enemy leaders as Fifth Legion Generalissimo 558.

Limitations

  • Giant opponents: His swordsmanship and movement techniques offer limited options against fully transformed Tailed Beasts and Susanoo 142 235.
  • Yagura's defenses: During their earlier confrontation, his short sword cannot adequately penetrate Yagura's thick Tailed Beast Chakra cloak 119.
  • Raw strength: A overpowers him in their initial direct clash 227.
  • No automatic resistance to special attacks: Genji's petrifying blast causes a spreading injury, and Sakumo lacks an antidote to Hanzō's Salamander Poison during their duel 63 99.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • White Fang Short Sword — Signature weapon used for Chakra-enhanced swordsmanship and assassination 99 119 227.
  • Nodachi — Carried for the confrontation with Asura; its length supports a wider slashing attack 396 398.
  • Twin waist blades and light armor — Additional equipment worn for a dangerous engagement while preserving agility 396.
  • Binoculars — Used to observe both Hanzō's forces and the results of the bombardment against Garp 96 558.
  • Military Affairs Department seal — Used to authorize military redeployments 235.

Relationships

  • Uchiha Tokimitsu — Close friend, deputy commander, and enduring political ally. Their complementary strengths join Sakumo's prestige among civilian and lesser-clan ninja with Uchiha military and financial power. Sakumo eventually acknowledges Tokimitsu's strategic superiority and their widening combat gap 47 74 124 309 360.
  • Hatake Kakashi — Son. Sakumo is affectionate and offers swordsmanship instruction, though official duties sometimes prevent their training. He privately hopes Kakashi's generation might eventually stand on equal footing with Tokimitsu 287 288 360.
  • Uchiha Setsuna — Praises Sakumo's integrity and later supports his alliance with the Uchiha Clan 46 106.
  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — Initially recognizes Sakumo as an upright Jonin, but increasingly regards his reform movement and Uchiha alliance as threats to Hokage authority 45 115 160.
  • Shimura Danzō — Political opponent who attempts to turn Sakumo against Tokimitsu and later ambushes both men. The betrayal ends Sakumo's willingness to compromise 90 119 120.
  • Uzumaki Ashina — Allied clan leader associated with the Uzumaki rescue and resistance to Kirigakure's demands. The Uzumaki Clan Head temporarily seals Sakumo's petrification injury 63 109 130.
  • Tsunade — Promises treatment for his injured shoulder and later participates in discussions concerning Konoha's political settlement 65 253.
  • Orochimaru — Fellow commander whose strength Sakumo respects but whose casualty-heavy approach he distrusts. Sakumo also identifies suspicious signs of laboratory work from his aura and the smell of blood and disinfectant 147 160.
  • Jiraiya — A junior who once admired Sakumo, but later confronts him over opposition to Danzō and eventually faces him while preparing Sage Mode 92 355.
  • Mimura Hamaki — Former right-hand man and political supporter. Sakumo is distressed by his challenge to Uchiha military authority but ultimately declines to risk his own standing to save him 180 288 291.

Trivia

  • Tokimitsu's memories of a previous life associate Sakumo with suicide and political persecution. Those reflections are not an account of Sakumo dying in this novel; he remains active into the Fifth Legion campaign 45 46 558.
  • His popularity extends beyond respectful recognition: ninja at the Northwest Border Defense Force camp seek handshakes and autographs when he visits 47.
  • Despite his fearsome reputation, Sakumo's use of One Thousand Years of Death leaves both the Sannin and watching Konoha Jonin visibly astonished 99.
