Background / History

Early Training and Ambitions

Born in Konoha year 17, Orochimaru becomes one of Sarutobi Hiruzen’s three disciples. Hiruzen considers him his most gifted and favored student, but access to the Scroll of Seals remains dependent on succeeding him as Hokage. Orochimaru initially pursues both stronger ninjutsu and political authority 8 71 76.

He also obtains a summoning contract with Ryūchi Cave. Their early relationship is transactional: Manda demands sacrifices, and Orochimaru’s attempt to learn Sage Art nearly ends in death after the White Snake Sage injects him with venom 315.

Encounters with Uchiha Tokimitsu

Orochimaru interrupts Tokimitsu’s training and tests him with a sudden attack. Tokimitsu counters through Sharingan genjutsu and Fire Style, forcing Orochimaru to shed his damaged body. The encounter sharpens Orochimaru’s envy of inherited bloodline abilities 70.

His subsequent request for Uzumaki sealing techniques is refused because Tokimitsu will not distribute an ally’s secrets without consent. Their standoff ends when an Anbu messenger summons Orochimaru; a later rematch involves Rashomon, Shadow Clones, and a concealed Kusanagi attack 71 74.

Despite his distrust of the Uchiha, Orochimaru warns Jiraiya that recklessly antagonizing ninja clans could push an indispensable part of Konoha against the village 73.

Wartime Service and Anbu Appointment

Orochimaru fights Hanzō alongside Tsunade and Jiraiya. Hanzō counters his swordsmanship and cuts him into three pieces, but his substitution technique keeps him alive. The confrontation ends with Hanzō sparing the trio and recognizing them as Konoha’s Legendary Sannin 98.

He subsequently serves as an operational commander. Hiruzen later appoints him Deputy Head of Anbu while judging that exposure to too much darkness has made him unsuitable to become Hokage; the advisors instead propose that he bear the village’s darker responsibilities 101 124.

During the war against Kirigakure, he joins Tokimitsu and Hatake Sakumo in pursuing the retreating Mist army. He recognizes the Third Mizukage’s Water Splitter Technique as effectively identical to the Second Hokage’s Water Severing Wave 149.

Secret Laboratories and Divided Patronage

After Danzō’s death, Orochimaru takes over several undiscovered Root laboratories. Without Root’s businesses or village funding, their operating costs exhaust his money. Sakumo confronts him over his activities, and Hiruzen warns him about human experimentation 160.

Tokimitsu subsequently invests in his work, but Orochimaru ends their cooperation when Hiruzen offers direct funding. His projects include preparations for the Wood Style Restart Plan. By this period, he regards political maneuvering as a distraction from ninjutsu research, though he remains entangled in the Hokage succession struggle and repeated Military Police raids 171 212 214 246.

Life Under Uchiha Rule

After Hiruzen’s death, Orochimaru submits to Tokimitsu and continues working under supervision. Tokimitsu permits personal longevity and immortality research after assigned projects are completed, but treats him as a useful specialist rather than a trusted ally 253 256.

Surveillance through the Heavenly Net, Uchiha personnel in his laboratories, and the clan’s reach beyond Konoha leave him feeling trapped. He considers leaving but sees nowhere safe to hide. Privately, Hiruzen’s death causes grief, insomnia, and nightmares, despite his outwardly composed surrender 262 285.

The White Snake Sage identifies outside influence operating through his dreams and offers the possibility of Sage Art and immortality. Later, she rebukes his unstable convictions and forces him to choose between immortality and personal bonds. He chooses immortality 286 316.

Jiraiya’s Frame-Up and Research Recruitment

Orochimaru shelters Jiraiya during a purge and repeatedly seeks his release from police custody. Their friendship collapses when Jiraiya plants twelve unconscious former subordinates in Orochimaru’s home to force him into defection 296 299 300 341.

Rather than follow Jiraiya’s plan, Orochimaru admits the Military Police and reports the frame-up. The later disappearance investigation also records testimony confirming Orochimaru’s involvement, while rumors question whether he alone is responsible 342 344.

He then offers Tokimitsu his expertise in Ninja Toad anatomy and Sage Chakra. Appointed Acting Director of the Konoha Research Institute, he gains extensive financial support, equipment, and materials; his private laboratory is filled in and its contents transferred to the institute 343 344.

Sage Research and Later Service

Orochimaru delivers Ryūchi Cave’s Sage Mode scrolls to Tokimitsu and briefly receives a contract with Garaga. The White Snake Sage subsequently revokes his summoning privileges, disabling many snake-dependent techniques. Reporting the anomaly earns him greater trust from Tokimitsu 346 347 350.

He develops anti-snake medicine for campaigns against Ryūchi Cave forces and receives captured snakes, frogs, research funding, and part of Ichikishimahime’s tail. His remaining dissent disappears after witnessing Tokimitsu’s power; he later receives the Sage Art Seed, whose concealed safeguards keep him subject to Tokimitsu’s control 357 360 361 365 372.

His later achievements in Kekkei Genkai and Kekkei Tōta research win recognition and further support. He also helps search for Black Zetsu’s underground base in the Land of Snow and participates in the invasion of Mount Myōboku, summoning Tagorihime and releasing masses of poisonous snakes 424 478 486.

Appearance

  • Build and complexion: Lean, with pale skin and a thin face 70 74 212.
  • Hair: Long and black 70.
  • Eyes: Golden, vertically slit pupils resembling a poisonous snake’s 70.
  • Facial markings: Purple eyeshadow extending toward the sides of his nose 70.
  • Voice and manner: A somewhat hoarse voice, sinister smile, and outwardly refined bearing 70.
  • Distinctive habit: Extends his long tongue to wash his face, particularly when excited or trying to regain composure 71 316 361.

Personality

Orochimaru combines scientific pride with strong practical instincts. He initially dismisses competing laboratories as expensive toys, but full institutional funding changes his opinion of wealth’s value to research. He adapts quickly to political danger, protecting Ryūchi Cave’s snakes before a purge and surrendering rather than accepting Jiraiya’s forced defection 214 314 341 344.

His cold reputation conceals genuine attachments. He grieves deeply for Hiruzen and protects Jiraiya even when doing so becomes inconvenient. Those bonds nevertheless lose priority when the White Snake Sage confronts him with a choice between friendship and immortality 285 296 300 316.

His pursuit of knowledge can become compulsive. Envy of bloodline inheritance, fixation on Sage Chakra, and fear of powerlessness repeatedly destabilize him. He is also germophobic and intensely protective of his living space, resenting Jiraiya’s grime and destruction of his carefully arranged garden 70 296 301 314.

  • Summoning contracts — Commonly summons Manda, briefly gains command of Garaga, and later summons Tagorihime during the Mount Myōboku assault 315 346 486.
  • Limit: Chakra imitations of lost snake techniques are less powerful and less convenient than the originals 374.

Great Snake Substitute Technique

  • Produces a fresh body after severe damage, including burning and being cut into three pieces 70 98.
  • Emerges covered in mucus, which he burns away with Chakra 70.
  • Limit: The technique is costly enough that Hanzō questions whether he has sufficient Chakra to continue fighting 98.

Eight Branches Technique

  • Transforms into an eight-headed giant snake capable of consuming vast numbers of poisonous snakes 286.
  • The White Snake Sage describes it as an obsession-based art of transcendence with the potential for Dragon Transformation and immortality 316.
  • Limit: Its cultivation is exceptionally difficult, and unstable convictions disrupt its foundation. Orochimaru’s actual attainment of immortality is not documented 316.

Sage Chakra

  • Tokimitsu’s Sage Art Seed improves his perception of Natural Energy and enables Sage Chakra refinement 361.
  • Study increases both his strength and his ability to conceal his presence 363.
  • Limit: He initially uses Sage Chakra only as a straightforward enhancement to ordinary ninjutsu, rather than mastering Ryūchi Cave’s specialized Sage Arts 374.
  • Hidden restriction: The seed contains safeguards that become stronger and harder to detect as Orochimaru grows stronger 365.

Swordsmanship and Ambush

  • Wields the Kusanagi Sword in concealed attacks, including a strike from underground behind Tokimitsu 74.
  • Uses Great Snake Style: Instant Sword Slash against Hanzō, who counters it directly 98.

Scientific Research

  • Ninja Toad anatomy: Maps the structures responsible for Sage Chakra storage and use, advancing research beyond simple extraction and analysis 344.
  • Anti-snake medicine: Produces compounds that induce frenzy, worsen injuries, and corrode Ryūchi Cave snakes; these preparations do not affect Tagitsuhime 372 374.
  • Sealing research: Helps upgrade the Space-Time Sealing Barrier to version 3.0, including a key-based exemption controlled by Tokimitsu 398.
