Background / History

Sage Shima served as one of Mount Myōboku's Two Sages alongside her husband, Sage Fukasaku. She supported Jiraiya's Sage Art training through logistical care, notably preparing insect-based meals intended to build his strength while he practiced controlling Natural Energy. 301

She treated Jiraiya with maternal concern, urging him to remain on Mount Myōboku rather than return to the Ninja World. When Konoha turned against him, she proposed using Toad Oil to make him part of Mount Myōboku's lineage and even suggested finding him a female frog to start a family. 303 306

After the Mount Myōboku-backed Akatsuki Organization was nearly paralyzed, Shima became increasingly doubtful of the sacred land's involvement in Ninja World affairs. She considered speaking with the Great Toad Sage after seeing Fukasaku's hesitation and grief over the losses. 339

During the war against the Shogunate, Shima fought beside Fukasaku and Jiraiya. She mourned the Ninja Frogs killed in the Shogunate's bombardments, many of whom were her descendants, and helped Jiraiya gather Natural Energy before the decisive battle. 371 373

When Uchiha Tokimitsu targeted Fukasaku as he prepared to activate their escape talisman, Shima pushed her husband aside and took the sword strike herself. Tokimitsu bisected her, but Fukasaku escaped through the talisman's teleportation. 374

Unlike Fukasaku and the Great Toad Sage, she was reluctant to involve Mount Myōboku in the Ninja World's conflicts. The destruction of the Akatsuki Organization and the mounting losses among the Ninja Frogs strengthened her opposition to continued intervention. 339 371
