Background
Yang Jian is the son of Yao Ji, the eldest princess of the Heavenly Court, and a human father. Haotian killed Yang Jian's father and brother and imprisoned Yao Ji beneath Peach Mountain. Yang Jian's overriding goal is to gain the strength to split the mountain and rescue her; he also remains responsible for protecting his third sister and the Howling Celestial Dog. 29 30
He became True Lord Yuding's disciple and trained in the East Sea for two years. There, he practiced the Eight-Nine Arcane Arts by carrying mountains and driving the sea, relying on the Howling Celestial Dog to hunt sea beasts for the flesh and blood needed to temper his body. 27 28
His training unintentionally created destructive waves that flooded a hundred miles of coastline and displaced tens of thousands. Yang Jian had believed that the East Sea Dragon Palace was containing the damage through a Dragon Prince, but accepted full responsibility when Di Xin confronted him. He offered to inspect the coast, compensate the victims, and submit himself for punishment if deaths had occurred. 28
Di Xin recognized Yang Jian's character and tried to recruit him. Yang Jian initially refused, fearing that his hatred of Haotian and pursuit of vengeance would endanger Yin Shang. After Di Xin forced him to confront the immense power of the Heavenly Court, Yang Jian's Dao heart collapsed and his spiritual power began dissipating. Di Xin used the Howling Celestial Dog's innate ability to preserve that power, then provoked Yang Jian into reaffirming his will to protect his remaining family. 29
The resulting breakthrough brought Yang Jian to the fifth level of the Eight-Nine Arcane Arts. He accepted Di Xin's appointment as Guardian General of the Human Race, but postponed active service until after he had attempted to save his mother. Di Xin promised that, once Yang Jian's divine abilities were complete, he would provide help in Chaoge for splitting Peach Mountain. 29 30
Appearance
Yang Jian is a handsome, heroic young man with a Heavenly Eye between his brows. His strenuous cultivation has left his hands covered in calluses. 27 29 30
- Possesses a Heavenly Eye on his forehead. 29
- Bears the appearance and bearing of a “magnificent and heroic” youth. 28
- His hands are callused from years of cultivation and physical training. 29
Personality
Yang Jian is principled and unusually willing to bear responsibility. Though unaware that his cultivation had harmed coastal civilians, he immediately accepted blame and offered restitution rather than shifting fault to the East Sea Dragon Palace. 28
His devotion to his imprisoned mother defines his choices. He refuses Di Xin's first offer of service because he considers rescuing Yao Ji more important, and because he fears bringing his conflict with Haotian upon Yin Shang. 28 30
He can be shaken when his hopes are challenged, as shown when Di Xin's words break his Dao heart. However, his resolve ultimately reasserts itself through his refusal to abandon his mother, sister, or companion. 29
