Background / History

Chang'an was born into the Zhu family, a Demon Hunter lineage that once produced a Great Wuchang. He was originally intended to inherit the family’s Magic Tool and become its Demon Hunter successor, but an accident caused him to lose his childhood memories. His sister Zhu Shi became the heir instead, while the family concealed all knowledge of Demon Hunters from him. 20

Although he retained only vague fragments of his early memories, Chang'an continued to believe that strange things existed. He was ridiculed and bullied in middle school for these claims; after years without another encounter, he gradually stopped speaking about them. 20

At Xianshui University, Chang'an developed a notorious reputation as a wealthy, arrogant “prodigal son.” His father held a high-ranking government position, and Chang'an often boasted about his family status, caused trouble, and frequented disreputable venues. He became widely ostracized despite his wealth. 8 12

He became friends with Zhuang Cheng after a falling out between them. Chang'an followed Zhuang’s investigations into supernatural rumors closely and came to admire him as a possible version of himself—someone willing to keep pursuing the strange despite public ridicule. 20 21

Appearance

Chang'an is a dashing young man who favors expensive designer clothing. His outfits are flashy and ostentatious, but poorly coordinated. 8 49

Personality

Chang'an initially presents himself as reckless, arrogant, and prone to causing trouble. However, his behavior is also shaped by isolation within the Zhu family and a desire for attention from his absent father. 8 50

When confronted with genuine supernatural danger, he is frightened and risk-averse. He worries about hostile entities emerging from the Fifteenth Floor cave, wants to seal it immediately, and becomes panicked after learning that a serial killer may target wealthy people such as himself. 10 11

Despite this fear, Chang'an is considerate of people he values. He warns Zhuang Cheng to stay away from him after learning he may be in danger, visits his hospitalized mother, and tries to protect Zhuang from taking unnecessary risks around the anomaly. 10 12 20

He is stubborn and contrary by nature: direct prohibitions can provoke him into doing exactly what he was told not to do. 50

Relationships

• Zhuang Cheng — His only friend at Xianshui University. Chang'an admires Zhuang’s persistence in investigating supernatural phenomena and brings him to investigate the Fifteenth Floor anomaly. 8 20 21

Fifteenth Floor Anomaly

Chang'an rents the fifteenth-floor apartment where a murder occurred eight months earlier. While alone, he discovers a hidden basement beneath a black plush rug and a wooden cover in the living-room floor. The entrance vanishes when police arrive, leaving him unable to prove his report. 8 23

Seeking someone who might believe him, Chang'an turns to Zhuang Cheng. Together, they uncover a ritual magic circle and the staircase leading into the anomalous space. Chang'an’s fear contrasts with Zhuang’s fascination, but he remains involved in the investigation and assists with practical attempts to examine the hole remotely. 9 10

Target of the Fallen Demon Hunter

During questioning by Agent Kong, Chang'an learns that the active serial killer has mainly targeted wealthy and influential people. Kong warns that Chang'an may become the killer’s next target, prompting Chang'an to avoid school and urge Zhuang Cheng not to stay close to him. 11 12

Luoshan subsequently monitors Chang'an because of the potential threat. Zhu Shi also worries that Fallen Demon Hunters could target him, particularly when he visits their hospitalized mother. 12 20

Aftermath

After the Fallen Demon Hunter incident appears resolved, Chang'an becomes more relaxed but remains away from school. Zhuang Cheng considers gradually distancing himself from Chang'an to prevent supernatural danger associated with Maza from spreading to him, yet struggles to end their friendship. 49 50

Chang'an reveals that his mother’s unexplained coma is Soul Deprivation Syndrome and speaks openly about his family’s estrangement, including Zhu Shi’s changed name and their father’s prolonged absence. 50
