Background / History

Maza is found by Zhuang Cheng at an abandoned construction site, injured, bloodstained, and carrying a loaded handgun. After initially withholding her identity, she introduces herself as Maza and says she came from a future Doomsday era in which distorted time and space expose survivors to monsters and anomalous events. 1 4 5

She attributes her arrival in the present to a failed spatial transfer, but cannot determine whether both her body and soul traveled or whether only her soul did. She also claims that the Great Demon of Doomsday severely wounded her soul, leaving her unable to use her supernatural power and prone to collapsing. 14 15

Maza is pursued as a suspected serial killer. The allegations connect her to the murder of a previous tenant eight months earlier and a recent series of killings, though she says she does not know why she is suspected. She admits to infiltrating a local Public Security Department facility and stealing a handgun and ammunition for information. 11 15

Zhuang Cheng hides Maza in his home despite the accusations. She agrees to remain temporarily while recovering, though she repeatedly warns him that associating with her will bring danger. As the pair encounter ritual arrays, anomalies, Luoshan, and Fallen Demon Hunters, Zhuang Cheng increasingly accepts her claimed jinx constitution as the reason his life has become entangled with the supernatural. 6 13 30

Luoshan identifies Maza as the sole known patient to awaken from Soul Deprivation Syndrome, a worldwide anomaly that leaves victims in vegetative states after losing their souls. Because she displayed spatial-transfer capabilities after waking and escaped with stolen firearms, an extreme Luoshan faction begins pursuing her through a nationwide search that disregards her basic rights. 22 34 50

Maza is a petite, fair-skinned young girl with a thin build. Agent Kong describes her as appearing younger than fourteen. 5 6 22

Maza is intensely guarded and alert around unfamiliar people. She reacts violently when startled awake, investigates Zhuang Cheng's home while he is absent, and remains wary even after accepting his shelter. 3 7 30

Her fear of harming others is genuine. She identifies herself as a jinx and hesitates to let Zhuang Cheng become involved with her, particularly because she believes anomalous misfortune can affect not only those near her but also people connected to them. 6 7 14

Despite this defensiveness, Maza gradually responds to ordinary kindness. A hot shower softens her attitude, and she openly appreciates Zhuang Cheng's cooking after experiencing the food shortages of the Doomsday era.
