Nature and Definition
Contained Objects are unnatural products that possess Absolute Traits—effects that operate independently of ordinary natural laws. They cannot be reliably explained, reproduced, or understood through conventional science alone 97 579 991.
A Contained Object may be a physical item, living being, area, virtual construct, language, culture, concept, or even a natural law. Its defining feature is not its appearance, but the presence of an absolute effect that remains fixed and cannot be reproduced by ordinary means 579 991.
Their origins are unknown. They may appear as if they emerged naturally, while some are connected to ancient users, dimensional travel, or larger changes in the Universe 104 580 1013.
Characteristics
- Absolute Traits: Their effects can overturn natural laws and may not require a comprehensible mechanism 97 991.
- Irreplicability: Creating an identical object does not normally reproduce its supernatural effect. Replication generally requires another Contained Object with a specific copying ability 579.
- Unpredictability: An apparently useful effect may carry hidden dangers, side effects, or conditions that are not immediately visible 105.
- Independent principles: Contained Objects do not need to follow scientific principles or possess an understandable operating mechanism 1063.
- Potential for intelligence: Some are mindless objects, while others possess personalities, memories, strategies, or the ability to negotiate 131 225.
- Derivatives and users: Some Contained Objects transform or empower living beings, creating Restricted individuals, Humanoid Contained Objects, or other derivative products 103 575 734.
- Non-physical manifestations: Some effects exist in virtual worlds, dimensions, or conceptual spaces rather than ordinary physical locations 545 991.
Threat Classification
The Society uses class labels to organize Contained Objects and assess containment difficulty. The available descriptions do not form a consistently linear ranking: one account places Beta-class above Gamma-, Alpha-, Delta-, and Omega-class objects, while another describes Omega-class entities as apocalyptic threats 343 668 967.
| Class | Documented description |
|---|---|
| Alpha-class | Generally the safest and particularly rare classification; some Alpha Objects can still possess dangerous or unusual effects 343. |
| Beta-class | Described as the highest threat level recorded in one classification account; Beta Objects can require major containment operations 343 668. |
| Gamma-class | A higher-risk class than Alpha in the cited ranking; Gamma Objects include entities too large or dangerous for ordinary environments 343 255. |
| Delta-class | Listed below Alpha in the cited classification order, although individual effects may still be difficult or costly to manage 343 661. |
| Omega-class | The term is also used for entities capable of threatening the Universe, including the Entropy Beast and the Apocalypse Chessboard 967. |
Forms and Manifestations
Contained Objects have appeared in several distinct forms:
- Ordinary objects: A rotten wooden carving, a crystal necklace, a box of crayons, and a wooden drawer 97 233 646 689.
- Living beings: Nanmen Babao became a Humanoid Contained Object after acquiring the “God’s Perspective” Trait 667.
- Animated or partial bodies: Beta-202 manifested as a flying head capable of independent movement and regeneration 131 132.
- Areas: The Bone Dissolution Hazard was identified as an area-type Contained Object 291.
- Virtual entities: A Contained Object could convert beings and objects into game data and return them to reality with altered states 545 568.
- Conceptual phenomena: Absolute Traits can belong to concepts, languages, cultures, or natural laws rather than a single physical object 991.
- Cosmic entities: The Entropy Beast, Insectoid Empress, and Apocalypse Chessboard are among the extreme examples guarded by the Blue White Society 967.
Effects and Abilities
Absolute Trait Manipulation
An Absolute Trait can impose a fixed result regardless of ordinary resistance or physical explanation. Examples include forcing movement, preventing tears, petrifying living beings, or causing anyone within a certain range to flee 297 689 373.
- Traits may ignore conventional durability or distance.
- The result may depend on a specific condition, such as contact, sight, written wording, or the presence of a particular target.
- A Trait can sometimes be countered by understanding its rules rather than opposing it directly 417.
Transformation and Empowerment
Some Contained Objects alter living beings or grant them supernatural abilities.
- The wooden carving caused nightmares while enabling underwater breathing 97 105.
- The Stone of Freedom transformed living beings into stone products and was used to create artworks 373.
- The Golden Apple enhanced Information Perception and helped determine a person’s potential for understanding Traits 995.
- The Unified Force Field Cubes granted functions such as acceleration, heat absorption, shields, deconstruction, and ion-spear creation 936.
Replication and Conversion
Certain Objects can copy or convert other things.
- The Blank Painting could simulate ordinary paintings and even reproduce the Traits of a painted Contained Object 667.
- The Random Drawer produced organs or other results based on written descriptions, but its interpretation was unpredictable and caused unintended deaths 646 649.
- The game-related Contained Object could convert real objects into virtual forms and return them to reality 545 568.
Information Effects
Some Contained Objects interact directly with knowledge, perception, or information.
- Nanmen Babao’s “God’s Perspective” allowed him to view the world from a distant third-person perspective, but prevented him from directly seeing through his own eyes 667.
- The Celestial Book recorded information and commentary about events, including secret thoughts and events that had already occurred 941 966 991.
- Information-based Traits can be copied, transferred, or used to perceive the deeper properties of other Objects 996 1028.
Containment
The Blue White Society’s guiding principle is to contain and control supernatural phenomena rather than immediately exploit them. Researchers must first determine whether an Object can harm humanity, whether its benefits are genuine, and whether it has hidden risks 104 105.
Containment may involve:
- Restricting access to the Object.
- Studying its conditions and side effects.
- Creating specialized containment chambers or procedures.
- Using D-Class Personnel as test subjects for dangerous Objects 97 112.
- Eliminating or suppressing derivatives when they reproduce.
- Separating multiple Objects whose Traits could interact catastrophically 296 661.
- Destroying an Object when possible, although destruction may be impractical or too costly 661.
Some Objects cannot be moved. The White Cloth Ghostly Shadow, for example, has a fixed location and must be repeatedly eliminated to prevent reproduction 661.
Known Examples
- Alpha-531, Wooden Carving — Causes nightmares and grants the ability to breathe underwater. Its physical composition is ordinary rotten wood despite its supernatural effect 97 105.
- Beta-202, Flying Head Barbarian — A floating head capable of flight, passing through walls, rapid regeneration, tirelessness, and memorizing the scent of living creatures 131 132.
- Alpha-100, Tearless Necklace — Prevents the wearer from shedding tears or allowing moisture to accumulate in the eyes 689.
- Beta-550, Stone of Freedom — Transforms living beings into stone products and was historically used to create artworks, including a statue of Zeus 373.
- Gamma-059, Kun — A colossal deep-sea behemoth derived from a Beta-class Object. Its growth eventually became too large for Earth to sustain indefinitely 255.
- White Cloth Ghostly Shadow — A reproducing entity associated with a fixed Shadow Space. It can be destroyed temporarily, but permanent destruction is considered too costly 653 661.
- Random Drawer — Produces organs or other results according to written descriptions, but interprets those descriptions unpredictably. Its use was prohibited after experiments caused deaths 646 649.
- Blank Painting — Can imitate paintings and reproduce the effects of painted Objects, including the Beta-class Figure in the Painting 667.
- Apocalypse Chessboard — An Omega-class Object whose loss could delete the Universe 967.
- Best Metal — An indestructible Object with an information depth beyond ordinary perception, described as an Endless Dimensions-level Object 1013.
Organizations and Associated Personnel
- Blue White Society — The primary modern organization responsible for locating, researching, containing, and controlling Contained Objects 104 105.
- D-Class Personnel — Death-row inmates who serve as test subjects for dangerous Objects in exchange for a chance to live 97.
- Restricted individuals — People whose bodies or abilities have been affected by Contained Objects but remain comparatively controllable 103.
- Enlighteners — Trusted custodians who control themselves and the Objects they possess while dedicating their lives to containment 147.
- Mohist School — An ancient containment organization that recorded seven contained Objects and destroyed fourteen others 291.
- Brotherhood — A secret organization that controlled Objects such as the Golden Apple and the Stone of Freedom, using them for preservation, infiltration, and warfare 368 373.
Containment Awareness
Containment Awareness is the principle that the danger of a Contained Object must be considered before its usefulness. A seemingly beneficial Object may carry unknown costs, affect future generations, or create a disaster that outweighs its benefits 105.
“When discovering a Contained Object, we must first consider its dangers.” 105
“If it couldn't be destroyed, then make it controllable!” 992
