Background / History

Molent City began as Hope Sea Fortress. It was renamed in honor of Grand Duke Forde Molent, who died resisting the Krissen Empire's invasion. The city became the center of the Forde Commercial Alliance after the Molent Reforms abolished feudalism and serfdom, unified merchant guilds, and established a commercial nation. 1

Situated on the Malichu Plains, the city benefited from the Silver River, which flows into the sea west of Molent City. The river supported Golden Bay and the city's naval fleet, while the surrounding plains sustained its early expansion through agricultural production. 1

Twenty years of peace transformed Molent City into the largest commercial city on the Galintea Continent. Commercial activity drew mercenaries, artisans, adventurers, merchants, slaves, and travelers, while millions of gold coins circulated through its markets daily. 1 37

The Commercial Alliance's later adoption of feudalism and expansionist wars undermined the city that had made it powerful. Major guilds transferred workshops, warehouses, and trusted staff to their own territories, while other countries cut trade routes and commercial ties with the Alliance. Molent City's foreign commerce declined, its academies closed for lack of students, and established guilds monopolized what remained of the market. 546 550

During the Norton Family's war with the Commercial Alliance, Lorist captured Molent City through a naval infiltration of Hidden Gold Bay. The occupation initially left the Norton Family responsible for feeding and governing more than one million residents, including refugees from the Malichu Plains. 540 547

Rather than return the city to its former rulers, Lorist and Fatty Shi supported the formation of the Molent City Autonomous Committee. The committee lifted guild restrictions on trade, encouraged workshops and small merchant guilds, revived fishing and shipbuilding, and later developed into the governing body of the Free Alliance. 550 551 560 593

Cityscape

Molent City is divided between an inner city—commonly called the Upper City and Central District—and an outer city. By the Norton Family occupation, its principal urban structure consisted of twelve inner-city districts and twenty-four outer-city districts, with separate shantytowns and slums beyond the walls. 1 541

Governance

Under the Forde Commercial Alliance, Molent City was not directly managed by the Alliance Council. Daily administration belonged to the Municipal Hall in the Central District. Its head was appointed by the Alliance Council for a five-year term, then reviewed by the district-elected City Council before possible reappointment or dismissal. 1

The city also relied on legalized underground criminal organizations to manage individual districts, an arrangement noted for its efficiency and relative incorruptibility. 1

Under the former Alliance, the city's proclaimed freedom and equality did not extend equally to all residents. Inner-city residents were largely guild managers, guild guards' families, nobles, and wealthy newcomers, while outer-city residents depended on guild-controlled food and daily-necessity ration orders. 541 547

Following the Norton Family occupation, community organizations from the outer districts, together with representatives of the Temple and Academy Districts, were organized into the Molent City Autonomous Committee. The committee managed civilian affairs and commercial activity, eventually serving as the governing authority of the Free Alliance. 550 551

Economy

Commercial Peak and Decline

Molent City was once the continent's foremost commercial metropolis, supported by trade, Golden Bay shipyards, the Malichu Plains, and a large mobile population of merchants and skilled workers. At its peak, the Commercial Alliance minted up to 68 million Gold Fude annually. 1 242 551

Its economy deteriorated after the Commercial Alliance's feudalization, wars, and trade isolation. Total coinage over a later three-year period fell to 7.6 million Gold Fude—less than one tenth of the former peak—while guild monopolies and rationing replaced open market activity. 546 551

Rationing System

Before the Norton occupation, the Commercial Alliance maintained a self-sufficient planned economy in which city residents served as both producers and consumers. Guilds provided basic subsistence, while residents earned ration orders for grain and necessities through labor rather than ordinary gold-coin transactions. 547

This system left residents materially constrained despite considerable privately held wealth. During the occupation, Fatty Shi estimated that many of the more than 1.3 million outer-city residents had hidden savings, but had lost confidence in investing because of guild monopolies and wartime instability. 551 561

Revival under the Autonomous Committee

The Norton Family supplied grain and household goods, paid laborers in cash, reopened commercial activity, and supported the formation of workshops, factories, fishing fleets, and small merchant guilds. The commercial district became active again after being cleared and renovated. 551 560

Glass War aftermath

An attack on the Mayflower Merchant Guild destroyed roughly one third of Molent City's inner city and killed numerous guild officials and family members. Public outrage pushed the Commercial Alliance toward war with the Kingdom of Trinber. 259 261

Luoshanji Chamber crisis

Marquis Bejishanluo and the Luoshanji Chamber of Commerce attempted to exploit grain shortages and public resentment to pressure visiting Northland nobles. Their forces besieged the Dosleg Grand Hotel, but Lorist's group escaped the city. The Seven Giants subsequently stripped Bejishanluo of his title, expelled him from the Alliance Council, and dissolved the Luoshanji Chamber. 316 317 319

Norton Family occupation

The Norton Family infiltrated Hidden Gold Bay disguised as the Invincible Fleet, seized the outer city defenses, and blockaded escape by sea. Guild guards and Great Swordsmen initially held the inner city, but it surrendered after Viscount Penelope persuaded its leaders to accept Lorist's safety guarantees. 538 540 541

The occupation immediately faced food shortages, minor riots, and the danger of citywide resistance. Lorist ordered the distribution of free grain rations to outer-city households, low-priced necessities through community leaders, and the seizure of guild warehouse stocks. 543

Establishment of the Free Alliance

The Commercial Alliance's refusal to quickly retake or support Molent City left the Norton Family with responsibility for its population. Fatty Shi proposed rebuilding the city and Malichu Plains as a new commercial alliance founded on freedom, equality, independence, and civilian self-government. 547 550

After commercial recovery and victory against the Commercial Alliance, residents increasingly supported the Free Alliance and regarded the Norton Family forces as protectors rather than merely occupiers. Molent City ultimately became the Free Alliance's capital. 573 593
