Background / History

Origins and Frontier Service

The Norton ancestors earned hereditary land through military merit. Their territory was marked out by the founding emperor of the Krissen Empire, and their northern reputation was familiar even to soldiers elsewhere in the empire. Martial training remained a household tradition 7 38 44.

By Lorist’s return, the family had occupied the Northlands for more than two centuries. Its succession oath required the head to guard the northern frontier, await the imperial family’s summons, and kneel only to the Krissen royal family and Norton ancestors 90 93.

Settlement proved difficult. The family established more than ten farming villages, but repeated Mountain barbarian attacks eventually forced it to abandon all of them. Winter Demonic Beast Tides remained another recurring threat 44.

Decline Before Lorist’s Return

The household once maintained two hundred fully equipped cavalrymen and a profitable annual caravan to Molent City. The caravan traded northern goods and demonic-beast hides, allowing the family to avoid relying on oppressive taxation 44.

A bandit attack killed Lorist’s third uncle and everyone in the caravan, eliminating its principal commercial income. Lorist’s eldest brother, the Gold-ranked Knight Aberide, subsequently died after being struck by a poisoned arrow while campaigning for the King of Iberia, a former imperial prince. Only a few dozen cavalrymen returned with his body, many wounded or disabled; compensation exhausted much of the family’s savings 44 179.

Lorist’s father later suffered fatal wounds fighting Mountain raiders after the territorial garrison failed to support him. The third young master died after being thrown by a frightened horse. A childhood illness had prevented him from awakening Battle Qi—an illness Lorist learned had followed Little Locke pushing him into a well 43 44.

These deaths left Lorist as the only surviving legitimate heir. Sertkamp and Pat sought him in Molent City, preserving twenty gold coins for his return journey despite their own hunger and poverty 43 44.

Succession and Reconstruction

Lorist chose to return and organized a supply convoy, initially intending to carry only twenty or thirty wagons of urgent goods. Fatty Shi proposed gathering refugees and training an army during the journey, simultaneously addressing the territory’s manpower shortage and its rebellious garrison 47 49.

The expedition also brought new sworn followers. Bordefinger pledged lifelong fealty, while Ready insisted on accompanying his master. Armed former slaves rallied under the Norton name after Lorist defeated the slavers attacking their camp 47 53.

After reaching the Northland, Lorist seized a Kemais construction site, rescued Norton personnel from the copper mine, and returned to the ancestral manor-castle. His succession ceremony made him Baron Norton. His first announcements concerned guard reorganization, education for his half-siblings, and construction of a secret military fortress 89 91 93.

War with Duke Lukins

The Norton Family paid territorial taxes but refused to recognize Duke Lukins as its superior lord. Lorist argued that the duke’s jurisdiction over the Northland did not replace the family’s direct allegiance to the Krissen royal line 120 121.

Camora’s demands for money and supplies escalated the dispute. After Lorist crippled Golden Knight Tabek and killed seven accompanying Silver Knights, Lukins ordered the Northland Legion to destroy the family. Residents of Northland Town offered the duke a secret route into Norton territory 126.

The conflict ultimately reversed the balance of power. Norton forces devastated the duke’s southern territory in the campaign remembered as the Southern Calamity, then defeated his allied lords at Pebble Castle. More than 300,000 people and extensive supplies were transferred into Norton lands before the family closed its borders 170 171 172.

Overseas and Provincial Expansion

The Nortons rejected the Iberian king’s subsequent demands for plunder, allegiance, and two legions. After an assassination attempt against Lorist, 24,000 Norton soldiers surrounded the Iberian capital on May 4, 1772. Its defenders surrendered after seeing the family’s steel-crossbow chariots and receiving threats against their households 178 179 220.

Shirovas Island became essential to Lorist’s plans for the family’s future. He refused to sell it to the Chikede Merchant Guild, even at the risk of war. The later Haneabada expedition sought to recover captured family knights and destroy the slave kingdom; its successful conclusion supplied the Nortons with wealth, recruits, and young laborers 250 275 301 302.

The family subsequently supported the restoration of the Antinak Second Prince and obtained influence over Draemke and Winston provinces. Territorial nobles were relocated into Norton vassalage, while campaigns against the Fissabrun Family secured the family’s position in the Southern Province 354 361 374 385 390.

Internal Rebellion

A divide developed between old-timers, principally from Maple Forest Villa, and newcomers, the knights and officials who had followed Lorist north. Hanske’s faction claimed greater loyalty through longstanding household ties and favored Ilena’s sons as heirs; the newcomers credited their own service for the family’s transformation 454.

During Lorist’s absence, Hanske seized the First Guard Legion, detained senior officials, and attempted to install Lorist’s eldest son Lescot as acting patriarch with royal approval. Returning home, Lorist arrested the conspirators and rejected the ruler’s intervention in Norton succession 504 513.

The resulting punishment was the largest execution in family history: 349 people were condemned, including Hanske’s seventeen-member household and Lescot. Thousands of accomplices and relatives were exiled. Senior officials knew the rebellion had nearly destroyed the Cannon Battalion, although outsiders considered the response excessive because the mutiny itself had produced no bloody fighting 515.

Commercial Alliance Wars and Later Rule

Norton forces became central to Antinak’s wars against the Commercial Alliance. Their winter offensive captured Federiga Royal City and struck Anderv, Portoorg, and Campana provinces, defeating reinforcements and destroying the Vicia Merchant Guild’s position 481 489 494.

The family later occupied Molent City’s outer city, using a fleet disguised as the enemy’s Invincible Fleet. Lorist offered to return the city if the Alliance agreed to peace, although guild guards and Great Swordsmen continued defending the inner city 540.

On October 10, 1780, Norton forces and their allies won the battle remembered as “The Roar of Cannon.” Cannons and explosive packs shattered the Alliance army, which lost more than 70,000 killed or wounded and nearly 200,000 prisoners. Subsequent campaigns captured four provinces and helped establish the Central-Southern Twenty-One Nations Pact 572 584.

After the war, Lorist withdrew most Norton forces from the mid-southern continent, retained the North Sea Fleet, and arranged a leased naval base near Hidden Gold Bay. Industrial growth funded further fleet expansion, while renewed royal provocations prompted defensive deployments along the family’s sphere of influence 592 595 619.

Economic Development

  • Early revenues: Copper, furs, demonic-beast hides, and caravan trade sustained the original household. Loss of the caravan left the copper mine essential to solvency 44.
  • Initial shortages: Warehouses held grain, copper ingots, and furs, but lacked iron ore, weapons, armor, cloth, spices, and reliable external trade channels 94.
  • Five-year infrastructure program: Lorist planned walls, river embankments, a seaport, and reclamation of the Black Mud Swamp, using military units in rotational construction labor 193.
  • Resource discoveries: Exploration of the Blade Mountain Range identified glue vine, black iron, tungsten gold, and chromium silver. A planned solar salt field addressed the salt shortage 178.
  • Real estate financing: Pre-sales funded development in fifteen towns across Happy Harvest Plains and Xing’an Plains; Northland Town’s renovation produced a substantial advance payment 361 362.
  • Proposed family bank: Lorist considered coin issuance, loans, deposits, and withdrawals to ease financial pressure and strengthen territorial financial control 361.
  • Military costs: At approximately 400,000 personnel, spending exceeded the family’s budget. Lorist credited nearly thirty million in Haneabada spoils with preventing bankruptcy 406.
  • Industrial growth: Family investments and Molent City’s revived wholesale market sharply increased production and revenue after the Alliance war 595.
  • Naval funding: Tolls, escort fees, and sales of captured ships supported the multiyear fleet construction program 595.

Women’s camp garrison Basha receives command, with an explicit warning against independent action 175.

Equipment and Manufacturing

  • Cid Armor: One of the technical developments credited with reducing Norton battlefield casualties 361.
  • Steel crossbow chariots: Deliver coordinated volleys capable of shattering infantry formations; their penetration helped compel the Iberian capital’s surrender 197 220.
  • Defensive repeating crossbows: Used on fortifications such as Pebble Castle 120.
  • Thunderbolt Trebuchets: Central to the family’s siege advantage, alongside steel crossbows 361 385 390.
  • Bronze cannons and explosive packs: Decisive at Malichu Plains; cannon fire had also killed four Great Swordsmen sent into the Northland 572.
  • Ceramic-jar grenades: Improvised from explosive packs for the Lindston Mountain City assault. Limited gunpowder production prevented broad deployment 584.
  • Water-powered forging machinery: Molds and hydraulic presses enabled mass production of standard equipment with less labor. Exposed designs were later copied successfully by the Commercial Alliance 622.
  • Fleet expansion plans: Improved thunderbolt warships, pirate-hunting destroyers, cruisers, whaling ships, passenger vessels, and larger cargo ships 595.

Tactics and Limitations

  • Combined-arms attacks: Crossbows and trebuchets disrupt formations before cavalry delivers the decisive charge 324 569.
  • Formation discipline: Coordinated heavy infantry could resist enemies supported by Gold-ranked swordsmen during the Haneabada landing 281.
  • Exceptional combatants: Lorist personally overcame threats beyond ordinary troops, but the household initially lacked another Great Swordsman and depended heavily on him 260 281.
  • Fortified urban resistance: Federiga’s reinforced buildings and street barricades inflicted losses severe enough for Malek to recommend halting the assault 491.
  • Artillery countermeasures: Sandbags and elevated defenses stalled Shiward at Lindston Mountain City, requiring Lorist’s personal surprise assault 582 583 584.
  • Technology secrecy: Foreign infiltration exposed manufacturing equipment, reducing the exclusivity of the Norton industrial advantage 572 622.

Governance and Social Policies

Subjects and Settlement

  • Early settlement incentives: The ancestors welcomed refugees and purchased slaves to free and settle as subjects 44.
  • Garrison privileges: Members’ households received land and exemptions from labor duties, poll taxes, and miscellaneous taxes, owing only a tenth of their harvest 44.
  • Entrenched households: Families avoided dividing into separate households, extending privileges across large clans. Garrison positions became effectively hereditary 44.
  • Forced relocation: Expansion included moving more than 300,000 people into Norton lands and later transferring prisoners and inhabitants from conquered Alliance provinces 172 572.
  • Labor release: Lorist promised freedom to more than thirty thousand captives after their three-year labor term, allowing those who wished to remain to settle 193.
  • Population growth: By the later period, the Northland held more than three million subjects and nearly sixty moderately sized towns 599 601.
  • Identity building: Lorist sought to make residents proud to call themselves “Norton people,” rather than merely Northlanders 167.
  • Religious supervision: Lorist recognized that temples could influence subjects whose loyalty remained incomplete, making outright suppression potentially counterproductive 601.

Military Welfare

  • Advancement opportunities: Family soldiers received generous pay and training, with the possibility of rising through Battle Qi ranks into knighthood 119.
  • Bereavement support: Families of fallen soldiers received monthly pensions and tax reductions; their children received education until adulthood 119.
  • Disabled veterans: Compensation and retraining allowed wounded soldiers to enter territorial administration 119.
  • Development duties: Lorist treated the armed forces as builders as well as defenders, assigning them rotational infrastructure labor 193.

Loyalty and Noble Reputation

  • Restricted allegiance: The ancestral oath explicitly rejects submission to anyone outside the Krissen royal family and Norton ancestors 93.
  • Legitimate succession: Lorist treats loyalty to Antinak as an inherited obligation, even while opposing its ruler’s interference and exploitation 237 434.
  • Resistance to independence: Establishing a duchy would risk the stigma of rebellion and sacrifice nearly three centuries of loyal reputation 434 478.
  • Alliance preservation: Lorist maintains the Four Northern Families Alliance despite Norton strength exceeding that of its partners combined, preferring cooperation and land exchanges to annexation 434 612.
