Background
Lorist transmigrated into the body of Norton Lorist after spending seven years in military service in his previous life. During two months recovering from his injuries, he studied Galintea’s history, geography, customs, and records to adapt to the unfamiliar world. 9
He remained at Dawnlight Academy rather than graduating after earning certifications in Accounting and Knight Training. He later added Apothecary, Magical Beast Lore, Ruin Studies, Archaeology, and Linguistics, believing knowledge was essential to surviving and integrating into Galintea. 9 10
While at the academy, Lorist became a seasoned Black Iron mercenary and built a reputation through small guild jobs, holiday expeditions, and hunting low-level magical beasts with friends. His early attempt to sell practical backpacks made from magical-beast pelts earned money and respect, but he abandoned the business after imitators entered the market. 9
Three years before becoming a formally recognized academy figure, Lorist was hired as a swordsmanship instructor and assigned to the Dual Excellence Class. He defeated the class’s dismissive students individually; after an assistant instructor incited a group attack and attempted to kill him from behind, Lorist beat the attacker severely. 6
His exceptional cross-rank dueling made him both a legend and an object of ridicule at Dawnlight Academy. Though stuck at Black Iron Three-Star, he earned a Gold swordsmanship badge through thirty consecutive higher-level victories and defended it in repeated duels; one year, he won all fifty-seven of his matches. 4 5
Lorist eventually departed Molent City to inherit the Norton Family territory in the North. He brought former academy students, weapons and armor bought from academy armories, and enough equipment to arm a legion. 50 51 52
Personality
Lorist is practical, observant, and strongly inclined toward long-term planning. He studies unfamiliar systems before acting, whether investigating Battle Qi, selecting a military-stockade site, solving a salt shortage, or planning territorial construction. 9 102 117 178 193
He values loyalty and capability over origin. He recruits mercenaries, convicts, former slaves, academy students, and talented people in difficult circumstances, often giving them equipment, employment, or advancement opportunities when they prove useful and reliable. 55 76 101 247
Despite his ruthlessness in war and politics, Lorist can be compassionate toward individuals. He takes in Bordefinger and his children, treats Beruniek’s illness, protects the families of fallen soldiers through promised pensions, and keeps his pledge to free captives after their labor terms. 38 55 193
His leadership can also be severe. He uses intimidation, manipulation, and harsh punishments when he believes family security or discipline requires them; after executing 100,000 captives, he becomes feared even by his own subordinates. 57 102 302
Appearance
Lorist’s appearance changes substantially over time. He is later described as having grown a full beard, making even acquaintances struggle to recognize the renowned Grand Duke of the Northland. 501
- Wore a Black Iron Three-Star Battle Qi emblem and Gold instructor badges for swordsmanship and Battle Qi at Dawnlight Academy. 4
- Favored armor that preserved speed and reactions; during the northbound journey, he chose chest-and-abdomen scale armor rather than heavier equipment. 52
- Used soft steel armor in close combat, though it could be torn by sword Qi from a Great Swordsman. 210
- Later grew a full beard and deliberately adopted a disheveled, farmer-like appearance while in disguise. 501
Abilities & Skills
Dynamic Vision
Lorist possesses a natural visual talent that lets him perceive the trajectories of extremely fast objects with unusual clarity. In a sword duel, rapid techniques appear slow enough for him to analyze and counter. 10
- Can focus on minute movements, such as counting a fly’s wingbeats. 10
- Gives him a major advantage against fast sword styles and opponents above his visible Battle Qi rank. 10 200
- Improves his general awareness even when not actively focused. 10
- Consumes mental energy; early use could not be sustained for long. 10
- His body and reaction speed initially struggled to match what his perception revealed, leaving openings against capable Silver-ranked opponents. 10
Swordsmanship
Lorist is an elite swordsman whose skill compensates for long periods of stalled Battle Qi cultivation. He earned Dawnlight Academy’s Gold swordsmanship badge through cross-rank victories and later became a Sword Saint. 5 475
- Won thirty consecutive higher-level challenges to obtain his Gold badge. 5
- Defeated Silver-ranked challengers despite being Black Iron, including five Silver mercenaries in one confrontation. 11
- Uses precise blade control to strike an enemy sword’s spine and avoid Silver sword-energy cuts. 35
- Defeated ten mercenaries in a sparring relay, using Ready’s greatsword to avoid breaking weaker opponents’ weapons. 117
- Could suppress a Gold Three-Star knight while unable to emit sword aura himself. 142
- Defeated four Silver Knights alone during the capture of Bread Hill. 163
Internal Force
Lorist applies cultivation methods and martial techniques from his previous life alongside Battle Qi. His Internal Force eventually reaches Manifest Force and then Dark Force. 30 57
- Practices the Eighteen Forms of the Fierce Tiger. 30
- Uses Internal Force to suppress opponents’ Battle Qi. 200
- His Internal Force enabled him to defeat a black-robed Great Swordsman, though the effort left him completely drained. 200
Blood Kill Domain
As a Sword Saint, Lorist manifests the Blood Kill Domain, a domain associated with a chilling and oppressive aura. 475 571
- Demonstrated the domain during a spar with Great Swordsman Hughs. 475
- Its chilling aura can restrict opponents whose Battle Qi attributes are vulnerable to it. 254
- In a blood-red state linked to his power, he can sense enemies around him and experiences greatly heightened speed, agility, strength, and physical condition. 254 300
- Activating the domain for extended defensive use causes severe exhaustion. 584
- Its range increased by one or two meters after he exhausted himself defending Lindenton Mountain City. 584
Military Command and Strategy
Lorist is an adaptive commander who emphasizes mobility, preparation, deception, logistics, and force reorganization. 69 159 219
- Reorganizes troops into specialized formations, including infantry, light cavalry scouts, knight orders, crossbow units, chariot units, and garrison forces. 55 69 159 193
- Uses disguises and surprise attacks, including infiltrating William Mills Castle as a Lancer squadron leader. 78
- Captured Bread Hill by infiltrating its defenses and coordinating an ambush against reinforcements. 163
- Broke through five Royal Guard Legion cavalry camps at night after identifying their plan through a captured prisoner. 239
- Uses equipment, wages, and rewards to secure mercenary and garrison loyalty. 101 102
Innovation and Administration
Lorist repeatedly applies practical knowledge to commerce, military supply, infrastructure, and technology. 9 51 193
- Crafted mirrors that sold for more than 10,000 gold coins at auction. 51
- Acquired and repurposed decommissioned weapons and armor from academy armories. 50 51
- Planned solar salt fields after discovering suitable resources in the Blade Mountain Range. 178
- Designed life jackets, lifebuoys, and improved landing boats after an accident killed eighteen soldiers during a landing drill. 339
- Pursued gunpowder, glass-production, cannon, and firearms research for the Norton Family. 247 260 421 514
Equipment
- Longsword; his primary weapon in duels and battle. 35 163
- Javelins; carried twelve on each side of his horse during the northbound journey. 52
- Scale armor protecting his chest and abdomen, chosen because it did not impair his speed or reactions. 52
- Soft steel armor for close combat. 210
- Gold swordsmanship and Battle Qi instructor badges from Dawnlight Academy. 4
- Illinois Horse, gifted by Instructor Vanson before his northern departure. 48
