| Top-tier dark-magic master | 195 | Identified as Earth's first and most powerful dark-magic master. His personal dark magic is described as nearly equivalent to the sum of all dark magic on Earth; if all humans became dark mages, his power could rival the Five Cosmic Entities. |
| Near multiverse-level | 459 | Kino senses that Chthon is close to multiverse level. Kino offers to help him break his single-universe-level bottleneck by spreading his followers and dark-magic knowledge across the Multiverse. |
Background / History
Chthon was the original owner of the Darkhold and had long treated its magic as a means of claiming souls. A connection to the book made the user's soul belong to him, while the book's spells also carried a corrupting influence. Hell Lords such as Mephisto and Dormammu had previously borrowed his power. 195
When Kino acquired the Darkhold, he travelled to the Blink Dimension to demand authorization to use Chthon's magic without payment and to exempt designated users from its cost. Chthon rejected the demand, regarding the Darkhold as the foundation of his eventual return to Earth. 195
Chthon fought Dark Phoenix and Galacta, using his experience and dark magic to suppress opponents whose raw power rivaled his own. Dark Phoenix's time-travelling strike briefly destroyed him, but he returned. Rather than prolong a battle against Kino's group and their implied backers, Chthon negotiated. 196
He granted Kino authorization over his dark magic and entrusted the abilities to his Earthly host, Wanda Maximoff. In return, Kino agreed to protect Wanda until she matured, though Chthon admitted his magic would continue to erode her. 196 Chthon later sent Kino Origin Powers from other Demon Gods through the Sithorn Mark as “tuition,” and supplied power sources used in Kino's projects. 204 263
After learning of Mephisto's disappearance and Hell's collapse, Chthon ordered his followers not to provoke Kino. He instead began seeking a beneficial relationship with the Demon King, including trading information to Cyttorak for portions of Cyttorak's power source. 196
Years later, Kino returned to recruit Chthon for an impending multiversal war. The offer to expand Chthon's following and spread dark-magic knowledge across the Multiverse directly appealed to his desire for greater power. Chthon voluntarily accepted, even acknowledging that he could be destroyed after serving as a weapon in the war. 459 After witnessing Kino defeat Cyttorak in seconds, Chthon submitted to Kino's authority and agreed to follow Yao's instructions. 460
Appearance
Chthon commonly manifests as a white-haired man emerging from the darkness of the Blink Dimension. 195
- White hair. 195
- Arrogant demeanor and an expressionless composure during negotiations. 195 196
- Can form a body or face from chaotic energy, surrounded by distorted, screaming phantoms representing his followers and dark-magic power. 459
Personality
Chthon initially presents himself as arrogant, possessive, and dismissive of demands concerning the Darkhold. He considers the book essential to his return to Earth and refuses to surrender its authorization lightly. 195
Despite this pride, he is highly pragmatic. When confronted by Kino, Dark Phoenix, and Galacta, Chthon chooses a mutually useful agreement over an uncertain, costly battle. He explicitly treats pride as optional after living for countless years. 196
His overriding motive is the expansion of his power through followers, dark-magic knowledge, and chaos. Chthon understands that releasing his teachings would spread madness and corruption, but regards those consequences as acceptable for the chance to reach multiverse level or higher. 459
Abilities & Skills
Darkhold Magic
Chthon owns and governs the Darkhold's magic, which Kino identifies as stronger than ordinary white magic. Its use traditionally demands souls as payment and establishes ownership over the user's soul. 195
- Can grant or withhold authorization to use his dark magic. 196
- Darkhold magic corrupts its users' minds and can erode a wielder even when Chthon cannot directly control them. 195 196
- His full Darkhold repertoire is described as the collection of magic he used while on Earth. 198
Chaos Magic
Chthon's Chaos Magic is capable of controlling reality. 198
- His Chaos Magic remained significant enough for Dormammu to seek out Chthon after obtaining a remaining portion of it. 350
- The power is associated with Wanda, Chthon's host and recipient of his magical authorization. 196
Creation Magic
Chthon's Creation Magic can create genuine mythical beings. 198
- Kino uses the Creation Magic acquired from Chthon to reproduce special materials from existing samples, including Adamantium and Vibranium. 206
- Certain materials, including Nth Metal and the Dionysus Factor, could not be reproduced through Kino's attempts. 206
Possession Magic
Chthon possesses a form of possession magic comparable to Shazam's empowerment, but with the added ability to control the possessed target. 198
- Chthon can directly interact with Wanda's soul and return it to her body. 334
- His connection to Wanda remains a potential means of influence, even after Kino's agreement prevented direct control through the granted magic. 196
Dark-Energy Combat
Chthon combines immense magical power with extensive combat experience, allowing him to contend with Dark Phoenix and Galacta despite their superior raw potential. 196
- Creates black shields capable of blocking incoming attacks. 196
- Generates dark vortices with enough suction to drag opponents in. 196
- Fires destructive red-energy attacks and dark-energy blasts. 195 196
- Teleports or reappears after being seemingly destroyed. 196
- Annihilated Dark Phoenix's and Galacta's initial attacks with a gesture. 195
Power Through Followers
Chthon's followers and the spread of his knowledge are the foundation of his growth. Faith serves as his anchor, while dark-magic knowledge acts as the seed of his influence. 459
- Rewards loyal followers with portions of his power. 196
- Can project his voice and send powers through the Sithorn Mark. 204
- Views multiversal dissemination of dark magic as the path to breaking his current limit. 459
