Background

At the end of the Mega-structure World's Golden Age, an unnamed human launched a failed rebellion to restore humanity's civilization. Nearly a thousand years later, when no qualified humans remained in either layer, Hai was activated in accordance with that person's prophecy. Its squad linked with the central AI, but self-salvation had already become impossible. 304

Hai spent 40,000 years roaming the reality layer and retrieving targets issued by the central AI. Its original combat squad disbanded 24,000 years before its meeting with Lan Yi because the reality layer was too vast and no longer posed threats requiring group action; Hai met its former teammates only three times over the following 16,000 years. 304

To prevent accumulated memory from impairing its physical actions, Hai uploads most of its memories to virtual-layer nodes every century. It nevertheless retains the human definition preserved by the old-era private soldiers, making it an anchor the central AI cannot fully ignore or reinterpret. 304 309

Appearance

Hai initially appears as a machine with blue mechanical eyes and a variable cube form. After gaining central-AI support, its eyes briefly become gold with human-like pupils. 304 309

Following its transformation and inheritance of Yin Wang, Hai takes on an angelic synthetic-human form.

Despite this detachment, Hai expresses regret that it was not activated during the old era, when humanity might still have been saved. Its prolonged contact with Lan Yi causes it to become more communicative and to seriously consider the possibility of becoming human. 304 306 358

Hai is deeply loyal to those it recognizes as companions. It and the Intelligent Machine Squid refuse to abandon their loyal beasts even when trapped in a crashed landing pod, and Hai later confronts the Angel Silicoid with a willingness to sacrifice itself. 357 365

Lan Yi initially refuses Hai's request, but accepts after deciding that cooperation will reduce hostility from the central AI and provide access to the virtual layer. 306

Hai later attempts to invade the Squid's thought container to learn more about the Angel Silicoid, but the Squid's spiritual resistance and deliberately obscured memories prevent a useful extraction. 338

Becoming Human

Lan Yi asks Hai what it will do after completing its duty and suggests that it can become human. Hai, formerly bound to its directive to wait for true humans, accepts the possibility with visible uncertainty. 358

Hai enters the virtual layer through the Intelligent Machine Squid to support Lan Yi's trap for the Angel Silicoid. 360

Three-in-One Rebirth
